Who are the shabaabs?

Recommended Posts

Khalaf

Well any answers on the question above? who are these guys, any names, structure of this movement, its leadership, and in history in Somalia? Are they the child sort speak of al ittihad? and currently how do they network in the clan-structure/regional structure of somalia? How much power/influence do they yield?

And the fact the "shabaabs" boycotted the meeting in asmara (thumbs up from me), is very interesting because Aweeys/Sharif were there this means what in their relationship with the face/leadership of the ICU? Someone make sense about this!

I think only a member of the Al-Shabaab can answer your questions :D

All what we can give you are observations of the current issues in somalia and in the region.

As far as i know, Al-Shabaab figures were part of the late Al-Ittihad movement specially the military wing of the movement. Some of them were trained in Afghanistan and they came back with this Al-Qaeda idealogy and soon started to apply to Al-Ittihad. But since the movement is composed of aged men and some old Sheikhs the new modifications were not agreed on.

This resulted the differagmation of the Ittihad ,,, and many of the military wing insisted they should create a Al-Qaeda style movement so that they could start Jihad against the kufaars and those warlords and rule with the Shariah.

Since early 90s they had different military camps in Somalia and even in Somaliland. They trained a lot and they contributed to the Jihad in Somali galbeed. Many of the key figures died in that region fighting against Tigree.

Now, the Al-shabaab is not well-known. Their structure is very complicated and their true leaders are extremely secret.

Some of their key figures are:

Hassan Turki ( a former Somali military commander joined Al-Ittihad - Sent and trained in Afghanistan)

Adan Hashi Eyro (A young man who joined the Al-Itihad during the 90s, trained in Somalia, Somali galbeed and lately in Afghanistan).

Ibrahim H Jama (A Canada resident joined the Afghan Mujahideen during the war against the soviet then took part of the creation of the first Somali Islamists military camps in the south.)

Ahmed Abdi Godane (Lived and studied in Pakistan then joined the Al-Qaedah camps in Afghanistan. Well trained, Masters in Business and highly quilified in the Islamic studies.)

Sh. Aweys is not a direct member of the group but it seems he is the general spritual leader. He is mainly active in the politics but he is not a direct leader of the al-shabaab.

Some of them like Turki and Ayro is difficult to agree with specially when it comes to the fighting and Jihad plannings.
