Obama steps up rhetoric against al-Qaeda and al-Shabab

Recommended Posts

Terrorist groups like al-Qaeda and al-Shabab do not think African life is valuable, President Obama has said in response to the Uganda bombings.

At least 74 people were killed in blasts targeting people watching the World Cup.

The Somali Islamist group al-Shabab said it was behind the attacks because Uganda supports Somalia's government.

An US administration official said al-Qaeda was racist and used black Africans as "cannon fodder".

Obama Says U.S. Will "Redouble" Efforts Against Al-Shabaab

Jim Lobe*

WASHINGTON, Jul 14 (IPS) - U.S. President Barack Obama has said Washington will "redouble" its efforts against the Somali Islamist group al- Shabaab (The Youth), whose deadly bombings in Kampala Sunday are likely to result in stepped-up U.S. military and other assistance to the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) in Mogadishu.

In an interview with the South African Broadcasting Corporation Tuesday, Obama suggested that the group represents a growing threat to the region.

"(W)hat we know is that if al-Shabaab takes more and more control within Somalia, that it is going to be exporting violence the way it just did in Uganda," he said.

"And so we've got to have a multinational effort. This is not something that the United States should do alone, that Uganda or others should do alone, but rather the African Union (AU), in its mission in Somalia, working the (TFG) to try to stabilise the situation and start putting that country on a pathway that provides opportunity for people, as opposed to creating a breeding ground for terrorism," Obama said.

How do the terrorists and the terrorist-sympathizers like them apples? I hope Obama's national security team really "redoubles" its efforts in Somalia.

NASSIR

Shabab is a lunatic outfit in service of a foreign agenda, but the Obama's rhetoic reminds me of the Janjaweed's argument in Darfur, Sudan. Lol

As often been said, traditional method or the use of force won't work. Even possible backlashes of the recent twin blasts in Uganda against Somalis in East Africa will work in favor of the Shabaab leaders who will be able to get their message across, a message that taps the sentiments of our people with a sense of grievance and social isolation.

I think the Ugandan government should keep encouraging Somalis to come and do business in Uganda, and protect them from misplaced aggresions and discrimination.
