Addis Ababa, March 30, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - Ambassador of Somalia to Ethiopia said the whole Mogadishu has been cleared up from remnants of the UIC forces after the final operation the TFG and the Ethiopian defense force launched on Thursday.

Ambassador Abdikharin Farah told journalists on Friday that peace and stability prevailed on almost 90 percent of Mogadishu city, but some forms of insurgencies have been witnessed in the remaining parts of the city.

Ambassador Farah said since representatives of various sections of the society had reached an agreement to facilitate ways of handing over those areas controlled by the insurgents to the TFG. For this reason, the TFG had stationed its security forces out side of the city.

However, he said, the situation allowed remnants of the UIC extremist forces to launch frequent attacks on air and seaports as well as other parts of the city that claimed lives of dozens of innocent civilians.

Since the situation become beyond the control of the clan leaders and representatives of the society, they requested the TFG to take appropriate measure against the remnants of the terrorist elements in those pocket areas, he said.

Accordingly, the TFG security forces, along with the Ethiopia defense forces, have launched final operation and totally cleared out areas known as Yashid, stadium, pasta factory, animal market, headquarter of former military forces and the junctions of roads in northern Mogadishu where the insurgents were sheltered.

Members of the international terrorist groups hiding in Mogadishu have been captured during the operation while some have been scattered to various places, he said.

“Mogadishu is now safer than few days ago,” Ambassador Farah said and added that the clearing out operation is still underway.

Concerning the national peace and reconciliation conference scheduled to be held in Mogadishu, Ambassador Farah said April 16th is still confirmed to be the beginning of the conference.

Addis Ababa , March 30, 2007 (Addis Ababa) - The Ethiopian army has freed areas in Mogadishu City who were under control of insurgents, whom it said, were affecting the movement of the peacekeeping forces in certain places of the city by launching an offensive, the Ministry of Information said.

The army of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) has been striving to bring dependable peace and stability in Mogadishu by averting the subversive activities of insurgents under the coordination of the UIC's remnants and militias operating under the shadow their clans, the Ministry quoted the Ministry of Defense as saying.

Meanwhile, the Ethiopian army operating in Somalia has been exerting efforts to resolve the clash between the TFG army and armed men peacefully through negotiation with the help of clan leaders.

However, as the efforts launched by the community and clan leaders was unsuccessful in stopping the subversive activities by the militias and the failure of the militias who are operating under the leaderships of the remnants of UIC's extremist group to stop their subversive activities, the Ethiopian army has launched its offensive against the forces since Thursday at the request of the TFG.

In its offensive, the Ethiopian army has put under control the several areas, which were used as their strongholds, including the stadium and Mogadishu tower, it said.

More than 200 armed men of the extremist group were killed and several others wounded during the offensive, the statement said, adding that 13 others surrendered to the army.

It said 13 battle-wagons and vehicles full of arms were destroyed by the offensive.

The statement said one military aircraft was damaged during the offensive, the statement said.
