Hargeisa (PP News Desk) —The Umbrella Koranic School Teachers in Hargeisa have raised objections to the recent Burao court ruling on Mohamed Jama Hassan, whom the court found guilty of child abuse. “We are not defending a Koranic school teacher found guilty, but we oppose the unjust ruling on a teacher in Burao,” said one teacher.

Another teacher described how people had carried out character assassinations and campaigns against their colleague Mohamed Jama on social media networks. “He was put on trial for incidents that did not take place in his Koranic school. He was also accused of different violations. The Togdheer Regional Court acquitted him. It is common these days to spread lies to damage the reputation of Koranic school teachers. Other Koranic school teachers are in jail for crimes similar to those that have been unjustly levelled against Mohamed Jama Hassan. Agencies are funding this campaign against Koranic schools. We will share the evidence on those agencies soon,” another teacher said.

Mohamed Jama Hassan was a Koranic school teacher for more than twenty years. Another Koranic school teacher who spoke to the media accused some social media personalities of blackmailing habits. “Some of them with social media accounts contact the Koranic schools in the hope of selling advertising space. When a teacher rejects such an offer, the social media person threatens to publicise a Photoshopped image of him with a pupil in a compromising situation. Who can we complain to about these threats against us? Nine Koranic teachers were acquitted; why did the [Somaliland Administration] not hold accountable the people who made false allegations against the teachers?” said another Koranic teacher.

The Somaliland Administration has not commented on the declaration  from the Association of Hargeisa Koranic School Teachers after a Court of Appeal in Burao (Togdheer) sentenced Mohamed Jama Hassan to fourteen years in jail, despite being acquitted by the First Court. It is unclear if Mohamed received legal representati or whether the Togdheer Appeal Court followed correct procedures and the Somaliland Administration Penal Code.
