Puntland Parliamentary Speaker Appoints Constitutional Amendment Committee

Puntland Parliamentary Speaker Mr Jibril is reportedly supportive of the proposed constitutional amendment aimed at boosting the political participation in the soon-to-be-overhauled Puntland political system.

Garoowe (PP News Desk) — The Speaker of Puntland Parliament Abdirashid Yusuf Jibril today appointed an advisory committee tasked with advising on the constitutional amendment proposed by Puntland State Government. The five member committee is chaired by Sharmarke Ali Elmi, and is to be aided by the legislative director of the parliament and the administrative and financial director of the parliament.

Puntland State Government has proposed constitutional amendments to the Constitution of Puntland to allow for the addition of two more political parties to the constitutionally mandated three parties that will qualify for a party status after local government elections have been concluded.

The former President of Puntland Abdirahman Farole criticised the proposed constitutional amendment despite the political association he founded, Horseed, underperforming abysmally during the 2021 pilot local government elections.
