Lucy Kibaki was furious at being called 'second lady'

Kenya's first lady Lucy Kibaki refused to attend official celebrations to mark the New Year after a family row at the state house, government sources say.

President Mwai Kibaki has two wives but Lucy normally accompanies him at all state functions.

Mrs Kibaki reportedly boycotted the party after a senior minister referred to her as the "second lady".

President Kibaki's second wife, Wambui, has lately gained prominence and gets the same privileges as her co-wife.

Late arrival

A senior government source told BBC News Online that Lucy Kibaki caused a huge scene at a private dinner party at the State House in the second city, Mombasa, which preceded the state celebrations to usher in the New Year.

The minister, according to the source, was proposing a toast when he made the statement that provoked the first lady.

Attempts to reconcile the two failed, and the guests at the party walked out.

The Daily Nation newspaper reports that President Kibaki arrived at the New Year's function late after trying in vain to convince the first lady to join him.

The president's second wife came into the public domain when a lengthy profile on her was published by a local newspaper last year, several months after Mr Kibaki came to power in December 2003.

Wambui Kibaki enjoys state security and other government benefits accorded to the first lady.

Both wives were in the president's entourage during Mr Kibaki's inaugural state visit to the United States last November.
