Somalia responds to Kenya’s decision to close Dadaab

The Somali government says it is shocked by Kenya’s recent decision to inform the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) plan to close the Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps, which is home to tens of thousands of Somalis.

Minister of information for Somalia, Abukar Osman Dubbe, told the BBC Somali Service that the Kenyan government is misleading the world, adding that refugees are in Dadaab under international law that must be protected them.

“Political issues are between the two countries. There is a case in court that has not yet been decided. The Kenya issues are unacceptable. Since it is defeated at ICJ over the maritime case and it now opted to take revenge on the refugees,” he added.

Minister Dubbe said Kenya has no interest in repatriating refugees and is already getting millions of US dollars from the international aid organizations, including the UN.
