Puntland To Pay Blood Money to Slain Girl’s Family

Garowe (PP News Desk) — Puntland State Government has accepted responsibility for the extrajudicial killing of Nadifo Faysal Shire whom the police shot dead in Garowe on 26 December 2020 during demonstrations against currency depreciation.

In a letter sent to the Puntland Finance Ministry, Puntland Minister for Security Abdisamad Mohamed Gallan referred to a letter from Puntland Police Command to take full responsibility for the death of the teenager. The import of the letter points to a decision by Puntland State Government to pay blood money to the family of Nadifa Shire.

The body of Nadifo, who belonged a marginalised Somali clan, had been in the mortuary for nine days. Puntland State Government had notified the family of the deceased girl about the decision to pay blood money.

The Office Puntland Human Rights Defender called on the Government to bring the police officer who killed Nadifo to justice.
