Galka’yo (PP News Desk) — Puntland authorities in North Galka’yo have closed four schools for violating educational regulations of the Ministry of Education.

The headteachers of the four schools and one teacher have been taken into custody. The four schools that were illegally opened in Galka’yo are National School, Abdullahi Yusuf School, Hormuud School and Waaberi School.

The Puntland-affiliated Mudug Governor Ahmed Huruse Hashi told Puntland Post that the regional administration submitted the request to close some of the schools two years ago. He said that one teacher from Hormuud School was particularly spiteful to Mudug administration and “described Puntland as an anarchic administration and said that he did not recognise Puntland as an administration.”

Huruse denied reports that schools had been targetted for following the Federal curriculum. “Schools require authorisation from the Ministry of Education to start teaching. We have not taken arbitrary actions against schools. We approached the courts to deal with the problem of illegal schools in Puntland” said Huruse.

Disagreement over the national curriculum between Puntland State and the Federal Government of Somalia persists.

The school named after the founding President of Puntland, Abdullahi Yusuf, had several names before the name change. Waaberi II has a sister school in South Galka’yo under Galmudug administration.
