Somalia allows flights with basic humanitarian supplies to land at Mogadishu airport

The Somali government has suspended local flights in the country till further notice on Saturday.

The move is aimed at curbing the spread of coronavirus from the capital to the countryside.

A statement from the ministry of transport and civil aviation noted the airline operators that the ban will take effect on Sunday 29th March.

Only cargo flights with basic humanitarian supplies like food and medicine will be granted permission but they need to notify the aviation department prior to their schedule.

The directive urged the crews to follow the guidelines of the ministry of health on their service.

The suspension comes a week after International flights we’re also canceled.

So far Somalia has registered three people with COVID-19, two citizens and one foreign national contracted by UN agency in the country.
