Somali military says Al-Shabaab figure captured in Lower Shabelle region

Somali Special Forces have arrested a senior figure of the militant group Al-Shabaab near the recently-captured southern town of Janale.

A joint Gorgor and Danab special forces arrested senior Al-Shabaab figure, Mohamud Yussuf Mansur, in an operation they carried out in villages near Janale.

Mansur was reportedly responsible for tax collection for the group in the agricultural town of Janale.

Somali Special Forces traied by Turkey and the US have been conducting combing operations in viallges near Janale to flush out the Al-Qaeda-linked militants from the region and hunt down their leaders.

Speaking to the Somali National Army Radio, Commander of Somalia’s Ground Forces, Brig-Gen Dirir, said that the operations will continue in the region.

The Somali army captured the strategic town of Janale in Lower Shabelle Region from Al-Shabaab last Monday.

Janale had been under the group’s control for the last 10 years.
