Last year Kenya scored a diplomatic goal against Somalia after it was elected to chair the Contact Group On Piracy Off the Coast of Somalia.

The Contract Group was formed in 2009 in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1851 to respond to the menace of pirates that attacked many ships and held hostages for ransom. “Kenya is in a maritime dispute with Somalia. The chairmanship of  the Contact Group On Piracy Off the Coast of Somalia (CGPOSC) will provide Kenya with an opportunity to form solid friendships with members of CGPOSC” Abdirisaq Mahamed Dirir, the former Director of Puntland Anti-piracy Agency, told Puntland Post.

“This opportunity may help Kenya gain an advantage in the maritime dispute with Somalia” Dirir said.

The Somali Federal Government was officially invited to attend ceremony to take place on the 27 February, when Kenya will officially take over chairmanship of CGPOSC.

The Federal Government of Somalia has not made its stance clear on the Kenya chairmanship of the CGPOSC nor has it allayed fears that this high profile maritime role for Kenya might prejudice the ruling of the International Court of Justice.
