Deeq A. Posted September 29, 2019 Somali National Army (SNA) killed a senior al-Shabab commander in an operation in Lower Shabelle region in southwestern Somalia, officials said on Sunday. Military officials who spoke the State-owned media said the Somali forces killed Hassan Abshir Jibril in bombardment on al-Shabaab base on the outskirts of Dhegle town. According to the officials, heavily armed al-Shabaab fighters have been regrouping themselves outside of the town during the bombing. Somali National News Agency (SONNA) reported that twenty al-Shabaab fighters including their leader were neutralized by the Somali army in coordination with AMISOM. The slain Jibril was said to be responsible for al-Shabaab’s several attacks on Janale and Barire towns of Lower Shabelle region. Al-Shabab did not comment on the latest incident which targeted its fighters. Recently Somali forces have killed dozens of al-Shabaab in raids on the group’s bases. Somali forces backed by African Union Mission in Somalia intensified operations on al-Shabaab in central and southern Somalia, conducting consecutive offensives to drive the militants out of these regions.
