An-Nisa Society, Q-News and Fathers Direct would like to invite you to participate an exciting conference entitled:

“Searching for Dad: Exploring Muslim Fatherhoodâ€

We are delighted to announce that the keynote address will be given by Dr Umar Faruq Abd-Allah, a prominent scholar and shaykh from the United States. His keynote address has been titled, “Father versus Patriarch: The Socio-Political Ramifications of Parenthood.†His address will explore the theological and spiritual dimensions of fatherhood as embodied in the Islamic non-gender specific concept of God and the model of the Prophet Muhammad (s). It will also focus on the nature of the nurturing father and its social-psychological and political implications—especially in terms of helping to thwart right-wing political ideologies and propensities. (For bio-data see below)

    The conference aims to:

    - Develop a broader understanding of Muslim fatherhood

    - Understand some of the real issues/dilemmas/barriers facing Muslim fathers

    - Provide tools and approach to working within Muslim communities

  3. I know few offenders...men or women I think belching to be highly offensive ...not to mention gross. Unless you're in the presence of loved ones who love you no matter what, don't do it in my presence.

    Sometimes, I lose my appetite.

  4. Assalamu Alaikum,

I've noticed that more and more muslims are becoming inspired and welcoming the arts into their lives. I don't know where we got the notion that a good form of music, in this case nasheeds, is prohibited in Islam. Alhamdulilah, that's all changing.

Yusuf Islam, a.k.a. Cat Stevens has picked up his guitar....Alhamdulilah.

I'll post more on this topic in a future date Insha Allah.

  5. The West African music I always hear in my friend's store (Half Mali/Senegalese) is soothing and enchanting to the soul. Now, I can't differentiate Mali music from Seneg..... Baba Maal comes to mind (barely miss the annual African festival in my city).

I have to talk to my friend ..but I'm interested in west african drumming only...y'all know of any group/CD that's soley drumming??

  6. Dear Christian,

The legal rulings regarding the inter-marriage between muslims and non-muslims is very clear in Islam.

Please read this link : Christian-Muslim Marriage

I can understand your hesitations to convert to Islam. I'd encourage you to read more about Islam and talk to knowledgable muslims as much as you can. Also, Islam sets limits between muslim men and women who are not married:

What is the proper gender-interaction in Islam?

Hope that helps, feel free to ask more questions!

  7. You know what's interesting is the method of learning the Quran using the lawha ('loox' in somali) I know the Quran schools back home taught kids using this woodboard! Also, the group gathering is called 'subcis' in somali. So I began wondering if West Africa influenced somalis in the way they transmitted the deen?

    Facinating article!
