    5. Taking account of the modernisation trend in the Post-colonial African state

     

    In Africa, we are now faced with a growing ‘public’ agitation for the state to respect the human rights of its citizens. As a result, anything anti-government today - be it for selfish ends or not (e.g. secessionist incidents that are disguised as a people’s right to self-determination) - tends to ride on the wings of ‘human rights’. A sudden proliferation of opportunists masquerading as human rights experts and activists has recently emerged. But a number of these opportunists are not in search of human rights. Among other things, their concern is with donor funds and the ideological re-focusing of the continent. Human rights in these parts of the world is, indeed, a lucrative business. But even with the emergence of all these opportunistic and pro-capitalist, laissez-faire tendencies in African society, the various sub-cultures of the traditional African set-up are not entirely obliterated. The change from the Old to the New, when viewed from a dialectical materialist angle, shows that there is often a carry over of some properties from the Old into the New. This explains, for example, the cultural dichotomy and the ambivalence of the post-colonial state in Africa: a silent struggle between values of the traditional African society and norms of modernity and Western civility. In this political milieu, however, we must find a new meaning to the concept of human rights in Africa.

     

    The African society, as I contend, has largely, and historically, been built on the notion of duty, as opposed to rights. And the case of Africa is not unique in this sense. Other developing societies such as the Asian societies have had similar experiences. In general, rights, in contrast to duties, are aggressive and assertive. Duties, on the other hand, call for modesty and humility, yet at the same time realising the importance of coexistence. In many cases, rights are ego-centric and tend to be jettisoned by surrogate activists in pursuit of their own selfish ends at the expense of the common good. To this end, the pursuit of anarchy is often disguised as an act of human rights. But this view does not exonerate the state from the obligation to respect and uphold the rights of its citizens. Indeed, the view does not call for a conservative and reactionary culture. Rather, the thesis in this study pins down both the state and the individual in as far as civic responsibilities are concerned. Let us take an enlightening example of a young couple that is about to get married.

    Guys,,,ameenah has actually given us great topics we can discuss,,,when i first thought of 'men forum' the only topic i had in mind was about "women" ;) yes, women are very complicated, we can't even cover all the sup topics of women, there is so much about women we can discuss. Sub topics i had in mind were, how to get xalimo attention, how to deal with wifey or girlfriend,how to tell your future wife you can't afford the dowry, how to please your mom, how to change women mood in few minutes from mad to happy and others. You see all these are good topics and i didn't even get to the deep topics about women. I will discuss those when admin makes the secret society i suggested available. smile.gif

    Damn those were the days....I think i miss when TV had excitement...pple waited all day to watch few hrs of TV....but now constant TV..pple are lazy, tv is boring even when you have 500 channels to choose from....and can u believe i use to be very happy with one channel....remember them days? lol

    Keep talking to your freind, not necessary about this topic, just general stuff until she feels confident with you again, then bring it up and ask her to repent. But if you keep bringing up this subject every time you see her or remind her about this..she may distance her self from you. Take it easy on her, until she is emotionally stable again.

    Shaqsii & illmatic: It’s understandable that you would prefer a woman with no “access baggage” but surely if she loves you and you love her, she makes you happy in more ways than one, why would you dismiss her just because she has kid or two?, why are you not making that sacrifice and take her for what she is or has. Surprisingly, you might even be happier in this marriage, than the one you’re seeking.

    Sister, true true, you have described the best scenerio possible. However, in reality that kind of a scenerio is hardy the case. If all the things you mention are there, there is no reason why i won't consider it. But, more often than not, that is not the case and single mothers are in a very complicated situations with kids, ex's et. Thus, I rather start a new family with the one i love, besides compatibility is what I'm worried about not "love" necessarly, although it is a good thing.

     

    Anyhow single mothers have nothing to worry about, since we have the some number of single fathers rooming as well. They should flock together, just a suggestion ;)

    Is it possible to set up men forum in a way only when certain nomads (fellas) log in...a men forum will appear... but when other nomads log in or lurk around(guest & ladies)they can't see it...is it possible? i been to another forum where they have it set up like that...only registered fellas can access (read&write) that part of the forum.

     

    I'm not sure if admin is technological upto the task though ;)

     

    personally don't care for "men forum" per se....but since nomads requested this repeatedly...why not try it..maybe 3mnth trail or something lol

    Has anyone seen Scare Tactics? which is Fear Factor meets Candid Camera. It's crazzy new prang show...the show is hosted by Shannen Doherty from Charmed and 92105. Has anyone seen? I'm thinking about giving them a call...to ask them help to play prang on my family :D .
