Martial law for Somalia as government asserts authority
General Duke replied to General Duke's topic in Politics
Martial law declared in Somalia Ethiopia was at the forefront of the drive against Islamists Somalia's parliament has voted to declare three months of martial law after the rout of Islamist forces. MPs sitting in the provincial town of Baidoa voted 154 to two to ratify Prime Minister Ali Mohamad Ghedi's plan to restore order in the war-ravaged state. The government regained control after a campaign led by Ethiopian troops which also saw US air attacks on militants. Meanwhile, nine people have died in clashes between rival clans in a town in central Somalia. Residents say at least nine people were killed in the settlement of Biyo-Adde when fighting broke out in a local market. The transitional government says it has sent police from its headquarters in nearby Jowhar. Martial law 'necessary' Correspondents say the government is trying to assert its authority over clan disputes and re-emerging local warlords two weeks after the Union of Islamic Courts militia was ousted from central and southern Somalia. The government says the last Islamic Courts base at Ras Kamboni is now in government hands and operations are continuing to hunt down Islamist militiamen. Martial law will allow the president to issue decrees on matters of national security, bans unlawful demonstrations and outlaws the spreading of propaganda. A government statement, quoted by news agency AFP, said the vote would give it the right to take "all necessary actions to enforce security in the country". Lawmakers opposed to the motion said too many people have arms in Somalia and it would be dangerous to impose martial law in such a situation. Earlier this week the US launched air strikes against Islamists, who they accuse of harbouring al-Qaeda members suspected of carrying out attacks against US embassies in East Africa. The Islamists denied they were sheltering senior al-Qaeda operatives and the strikes were condemned by some regional powers, and humanitarian groups. -

Somalia declares state of emergency Gedi, the prime minister, says the state of emergency is needed to restore security [AFP] Somalia's parliament has declared a state of emergency for three months to restore security after several weeks of war. Members of parliament passed the vote in Baidoa on Saturday, the town that acted as the interim seat of government until Somali and Ethiopian troops ousted the Council of Islamic Courts that controlled much of the south. "A three-month state of emergency has been passed. If need arises for the government to extend the period then the president will have to ask parliament for approval," Osman Elmi Boqore, the second deputy speaker, told parliament. Ali Mohamed Gedi, the prime minister, said in late December that three months of a state of emergency were necessary to impose order after Ethiopian troops, planes and tanks helped Somali government forces end six months of rule by the Islamic courts. -
I just want to know how many people live in those regions, and the number should at least be accurate. I doubt that there is any site or person who has the accurate number of how many people live in those regions. The same for Mogadishu's population..There are only estimates and thats relative to who you ask. And you assume that i didn’t know that they had depended on Eritrea and Oromo fighters. TFG and ICU on numerous occasions declined to negotiate. One just happened to have America the World Power and Ethiopia the puppet of the World Power as allies. You are as weak as your allies. Duke, don’t you know that when one returns they tend to return stronger, more skilled and determined. Indeed but on most occsaions groups like these never return to their former power, much like the fact how Xasan Dahir never returned to Bossaso and Gedo his former bases and thus unlikely that he will return to Mogadishu.

^^^What type of site would be acceptable to you? I am not mesmerized by the clan courts, I just brought facts to you that they relied on Eritrea and the Oromo fighters way too much believing in some domino effect within Ethiopia. Thus this underpined their whole strategy they rebufed every and any peace talks favouring to get legitimacy through the gun. The mistake was a fatal one and thus it is unlikely they will ever come back as the force they once where..

^^Tuukale its an important piece because it highlights the fact that there are some within the media that do support the TFG, this also in no mere tabloid and not based on clan allegience. CG, I see you are working over time.. -
^^^Mystic, the clan courts believed Eritrea, Egypt, Djibouti would support them against the war on Ethiopia which they resented for supporting the TFG, thus in the power play Eritrea, Oromo and other groups where no match for the Ethiopians, but thats not what Xasan Dahir had in mind when he was praying for this fight, nor when IndaCade was making daily threats against, TFG, Ethiopia and IGAD. Bay & Bakool is under populated? Puntland is underpopulated? The southern regions are under populated? Give us a break will you.

Martial law for Somalia as government asserts authority -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Somalia's parliament has given interim President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed backing to impose martial law after the government's Islamist enemies were forced from their last remaining hideout. As Ahmed's weak transitional administration sought to stamp its authority by rounding up weapons in the capital Mogadishu, MPs sitting in the town of Baidoa approved a motion on a state of emergency, which enables the government to impose martial law across the lawless nation Saturday. The government first announced its intention to impose martial law late last month, shortly after the Islamists, who had been in power in Mogadishu since June, fled the capital. While Saturday's vote was a formality, it gives Yusuf's regime added authority in its quest to curb the activities of the country's warlords and their militiamen. The law allows the president to issue decrees on matters of national security, bans unlawful demonstrations and outlaws the spreading of propaganda. It also gives legal backing to the presence of Ethiopian troops which has spurred resentment among locals who have for decades traditionally regarded Addis Ababa as an enemy. Somalis were divided on the new law, which is sure to face opposition from armed groups in the country. "If the whole idea is to fight insecurity, Somalia must accept the law," said former teacher Sheikh Ahmed Awill Ibrahim. "But if this is a dictatorial tendence by President Yusuf, we shall oppose it." "I do not care if the gunmen are arrested under the new law because they have mistreated us for the last 15 years," said Khadija Mohamed, a midwife. Abdi Mohamed Kathar, a student, disagreed. "First, the Ethiopian troops must go out of our country. Imposing harsh laws is a recipe for the continuation of civil strife," he said. The transitional government was formed in Kenya in 2004 and returned to Somalia the following year but, unable to go to Mogadishu, set up in Baidoa some 150 miles (240 kilometres) northwest of the capital. It remained largely powerless until Ethiopia weighed in against the growing strength of the Islamists, who had been establishing order after crushing the warlords but were accused by the United States of having links with Al-Qaeda. As Ethiopian troops along with Somali government forces approached Mogadishu on December 28, the Islamists melted away. Some of their fighters took refuge near the southern border with Kenya but the government announced Saturday they had now been driven from the area after a gunbattle the night before. In the capital meanwhile, Ethiopian troops, backed by Somali government forces, searched for heavy artillery that might be used against aircraft arriving in the city's recently-reopened international airport. But residents in the neighbourhood, where the joint Ethiopian-Somali troops are located, said many had buried their weapons. At least 10 people have been killed in Mogadishu since the Islamists fled, including attacks targeted at Ethiopian camps and convoys. The government has blamed the attacks on Islamist fighters who are still holed up in Mogadishu. The search comes a day after the key Mogadishu warlords agreed to disarm their fighters and join the government. The committee which will oversee the implementation of the ceasefire was due to meet for the first time Saturday. However the agreement has been met with scepticism by people in Somalia, which has been devoid of an effective central authority since the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre. Even as the accord between the government and seven warlords was being negotiated, forces loyal to one of them engaged in a firefight with security forces outside the talks' venue. Five people died in the clashes. In a further sign of continuing unrest, three people were arrested in northern Mogadishu overnight after unknown assailants hurled a grenade into a hotel while 10 people were killed in clashes between clans in central Somalia.

^^^No one is cheering for Amxaro in fact the Ethiopian state is no longer run by Amxaro, just correcting you saxib, we are rooting for the state of Somalia and its government that has a right to get support from any where even our old Somali passport holder Melez Zanawi, Uganda, Kenya the US, China and the UN security council. Even you admited that many officers of the Ethiopian armed forces are Somali includingone you mentioned, thus what we have here is a new reality. This is not the 1960s when through ignorance we lost NFD, and before that the Western Somali state.. -

Lets review the issues thats getting on your nerves dear friend. Fact your phantom state is not recognised nor even controls the land area of the former British colony. Fact, that the TFG is in control of the whole country and has routed the clan courts and humbled the warlords. Fact the Somali people specially the unarmed clans and the common man have a historic opportunity to reclaim their lost rights. Fact, the foreign supporters of the TFG will leave after the national armed forces are trained and able to maintain order across the Somali Federal republic.
