  3. (AP) Somalia is in "a state of war," the country's Islamic leader said Thursday, as bodies lay in the streets of strategic villages where U.N.-backed government troops fought advancing Islamic forces. The clashes threaten to spiral into a major conflict in this volatile region, sucking in Ethiopia and its bitter rival Eritrea, which is accused of supporting the Islamic group. Analysts believe Ethiopia may soon raise the stakes by deploying attack helicopters in support of the government. An Associated Press photographer saw 19 bodies of Islamic fighters in Moode Moode, a town nine miles from the government garrison town of Baidoa, where fighting had taken place Wednesday. Three Islamic fighters were captured. One, 25-year-old Aweys Hassan Ma'alim, said he had been forced to fight by the Islamic movement. Another, Adan Abdullahi Mohammed, said he wanted to fight Ethiopians and "die for the sake of Allah in jihad." Meanwhile Sheikh Ibrahim Shukri Abuu-Zeynab, a spokesman for the Islamic courts, said they had now captured the town of Idale, 37 miles southwest of Baidoa, and killed 200 Ethiopian troops. The claim could not be verified. "All Somalis should take part in this struggle against Ethiopia," Sheik Hassan Dahir Aweys, an Islamic leader, told The Associated Press. Three days of clashes between the Islamic fighters and government forces, newly trained by Ethiopian troops, have left more than 100 people dead. Ethiopia denies its forces are fighting, but says it has deployed several hundred military trainers in support of the transitional government. On Wednesday, Aweys told an EU envoy that he was willing to return to peace talks with the U.N.-backed Somali government, but on Thursday, he said "the country is in a state of war." In Ethiopia, the government said Wednesday that the Islamic group was warmongering and not interested in peace. "Ethiopia has exerted efforts as it will do so for the peaceful resolution of the problem in Somalia," the statement said. EU envoy Louis Michel, in response to a question about Eritrea and Ethiopia's involvement, said, "Somalia is suffering because some are using Somalia as a battlefield for other issues." Both countries fought an unresolved border war in 1998. Somalia's deputy defense minister Salad Ali Jelle told reporters that 71 Islamic fighters had been killed and 221 injured so far during clashes near Baidoa. Three government troops were killed and seven injured, Jelle said. Separately, witnesses in the town of Bur Haqaba, which is controlled by the Islamic movement, reported hearing mortars, anti-aircraft missiles and rocket-propelled grenades being fired Thursday. After returning from Somalia late Wednesday, Michel said skirmishes were likely to continue, but said both sides had broadly agreed to ease tensions and hold new talks in Sudan. The interim government holds only a small area around the central town of Baidoa. The Islamic militiamen control the capital, Mogadishu, but have also fanned out across most of southern Somalia. Somalia has not had an effective government since 1991. ___ Associated Press writers Mohamed Olad Hassan and Mohamed Sheik Nor contributed to this report.

  15. Ethiopian tanks roll into Somalia Mogadishu/Nairobi - Fighting between forces loyal to the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) and troops from the UN-backed government restarted on Friday, with reports saying Ethiopia had sent in tanks and helicopters to the front lines. Both sides have reported heavy casualties after three days of fighting, already in the hundreds, but these numbers could not be independently verified. Some 50 tanks and other armoured vehicles as well as helicopters reportedly moved towards the battlefront on Friday, according to local media. Ethiopia has continuously denied any presence in Somalia, except for a few hundred soldiers training the government forces. Artillery exchanges were reported to have resumed near Idale, 60 kilometres south-west of the government's seat in Baidoa, after abating for a short while Friday morning. Fighting was also reported in Dooynuunaay, 25 kilometres south-east of Baidoa. Witnesses said they saw bodies strewn along roads near the fronts. On Thursday, the leader of the UIC, Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, said the group was not fighting the government, but rather the Ethiopian troops said to be in the country training the government forces. The Somali transitional government has also denied that Ethiopian troops are fighting alongside its forces. The first clashes erupted overnight Tuesday in Idale, a day after an EU envoy successfully pushed the warring sides to agree to attend peace talks. Tuesday also marked a one-week deadline given to Ethiopia by the UIC to remove its troops or face attacks. Aid agencies said civilians were fleeing the fighting and said they were concerned about their staff on the ground, who are working to assist flood victims after weeks of torrential rains. The battles have raised fears that an all-out war could break out, sucking in neighbouring Ethiopia and its foe Eritrea, who fought a 1998-2000 border war and could use the Somali conflict as a proxy. On Wednesday, EU envoy Louis Michel met with both sides and convinced them to return to 'unconditional' peace talks, meant to bring some sort of stability to the anarchic country. The UIC dramatically rose to power this year, taking the capital Mogadishu in June and a series of other southern and central Somali towns afterwards. They seek to establish a religious state based on Islamic Sharia law, drawing in ethnic-Somali regions of Kenya and Ethiopia as part of a 'united Somalia.' The weak transitional government, divided and limited to its base in Baidoa, is the 14th attempt at establishing central rule in the country. Somalia has been without a strong government since the 1991 ouster of dictator Mohammed Siad Barre by warlords plunged the country into lawlessness. Source: dpa
  16. Thousands flee fighting in Somalia By SALAD DUHUL The Associated Press MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Thousands of Somalis fled their homes Friday as government and Ethiopians troops used artillery to defend against Islamic fighters attempting to advance on the U.N.-backed regime's only stronghold. Residents reported seeing hundreds of troops and trucks being moved toward the front lines around Baidoa — the only area the government controls — early Friday. Bodies lay in the streets and fighters pounded each other's positions with heavy artillery and mortars overnight, leaving a European peace initiative in tatters. Fearing worsening fighting, families began to abandon their homes, crops and livestock. "Unlike during the previous days of the fighting, this morning large numbers of people were coming from the villages around Baidoa and could be seen fleeing from the region," said Duqow Salad, a U.N. aid worker based in Wajid, north of Baidoa. One government parliamentarian in Baidoa said he feared it will fall to the Islamic group. "More well-armed Ethiopians are pouring in here minute after minute and thousands of Islamic fighters are heading here to force them and the government out," he said on condition of anonymity because he feared reprisals. Hundreds of people in areas held by the Islamic forces also were fleeing south to the capital, Mogadishu, about 140 southeast of Baidoa. "I think we have lost hundreds of our animals in the fighting, most of them were caught in the crossfire," said Malable Aden, who reached Mogadishu by car. "We were supposed to reap our harvest of this season, but unfortunately we were forced to leave them behind for the pigs and birds to destroy them." The leader of the Council of Islamic Courts said Thursday that Somalia was in "a state of war" and called on all Somalis to fight Ethiopian forces in the country. Ethiopia denies its forces are fighting, but says it has deployed several hundred military trainers in support of Somalia's U.N.-backed transitional government. The clashes threaten to spiral into a major conflict in this volatile region, sucking in Ethiopia and its bitter rival, Eritrea. Analysts believe Ethiopia may soon raise the stakes by deploying attack helicopters in support of the government. "They (the Islamic group) are claiming that Ethiopia is fighting against them and this is totally false," said government spokesman Zemedkun Teckle. "If the time comes that we have to fight, it will be very clear to everyone and there will be no doubt because we will announce this to our people." The United Nations has appealed for calm, saying fighting would prevent aid from reaching hundreds of thousands in dire need of help because of hunger and flooding. Somalia has not had an effective government since 1991. The country's secular interim government, set up in 2004 and backed by the U.N., has rejected religious rule. Muslim leaders have insisted on an Islamic government. Somalia's internationally recognized central government holds only a small area around the central town of Baidoa, about 140 miles northwest of the capital of Mogadishu. The Islamic militiamen, meanwhile, control Mogadishu along with most of southern Somalia. Fighting along two separate front lines continued for a fourth day on Friday, with both sides claiming victory. Around 500 Ethiopian troops with eight tanks and 30 pickup trucks mounted with anti-aircraft guns were headed for Bandiradley, an Islamic group stronghold in central Somalia, said witnesses and Islamic officials. An Associated Press photographer saw 19 bodies of Islamic fighters Thursday in Moode Moode, a town nine miles from Baidoa. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Islamic movement, Sheik Ibrahim Shukri Abuu-Zeynab, said it had captured Idale, a town 37 miles southwest of Baidoa and the scene of fighting Tuesday. He said 200 Ethiopian troops had been killed; the claim could not be verified. Associated Press writers Mohamed Olad Hassan and Mohamed Sheik Nor contributed to this report. Source: AP
  17. Red Cross reports many dead in Somalia BAIDOA, Somalia AFP The International Committee of the Red Cross said that fighting in Somalia had left "dozens" dead and made many homeless. For its part the Somali government said its Ethiopian-backed forces had killed more than 500 Islamic fighters in three days of deadly clashes near Baidoa, the seat of government. "We are very concerned about the plight of civilians who might get caught up in the fighting," said Pascal Hundt, the ICRC's chief for Somalia, said Friday. "We call on all parties involved in the clashes to spare and protect civilians and to take every precaution when conducting military operations," he said in a statement. The ICRC urged rival sides "to ensure that wounded and captured fighters are protected and receive treatment and that medical staff, hospitals and clinics are spared from attacks." Hospitals and clinics in the region had admitted at least 200 wounded since Wednesday, the ICRC said. Somali Information Minister Ali Jama said fatalities were reported on two fronts east and south of the Baidoa, about 250 kilometres (155 miles) northwest of the capital Mogadishu. "The combined total from two fronts is over 500 Islamists killed since Wednesday," Jama told АFР. The figure could not be independently verified. "Most of those killed are innocent children who have been sent to the frontline. It is unfortunate because we have been forced into this ... we do not like shedding the blood of children," Jama added. Fighting erupted early Wednesday, hours after the expiry of an Islamist-imposed ultimatum for thousands of Ethiopian troops the Islamists say have been deployed to back the government. In addition, Jama said the government had lost 15 soldiers in Daynunay, a flashpoint garrison town about 30 kilometres to the east, and in the Idale and Dinsoor trading posts, about 60 kilometres (40 miles) and 120 kilometres (75 miles) south of Baidoa. "The fighting is intensifying in Dinsoor region. It will continue as long as they are attacking us. If they don't stop we shall move to their positions," Jama said, adding that thousands of civilians had been displaced by the latest clashes that threaten the entire Horn of Africa region. On Thursday, the Islamists said they had killed at least 70 rival fighters. [ December 23, 2006, 12:00 AM: Message edited by: Miskiin-Macruuf-Aqiyaar ]

Darawiish the best thing to happen to Somalia! ps; No offence for been all up on your case! True More than half million victims from north central (nearly a third of region’s population) died during the colonial era, because of their religion, freedom, Somali unity, dignity, and to remove the fake borders between Somali brethren (Somalia’s version of Berlin Wall) People of SSC courageously challenged the lone super power of the time Who was responsible the first genocide in Horn of Africa? British and their local allies If northwest region of Somalia wants to leave the union, it’s their business BUT people of north central (ssc) will never agree to go back to dark colonial era, Ama soomaali waanu wax la qabsan, hadii kalena waanu filan nahay Waxaan leeyahay lakum diinakum waliya diin, koley hishiinmeeno waxbana iskuma qirano Dadka gobolada SSC wali tii waagii isticmaarka ka raacday uu ku sameeyey ingriiska wali kama soo kaban, taasa keentay in snm xagdaro ku qabsatumeelo kamida gobolka Sool, waa hubaal inay SSCiska xoreenayaan snm
