  1. from DATA.ORG ------- Every year Sub-Saharan Africa, the poorest region of the world, spends $14.5 billion dollars repaying debts to the world’s rich countries and international institutions such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Many countries in Africa spend more each year on debt than on health care or education. Why? Decades worth of loans have been given without much thought to how countries could pay them back. Some of the loans went to prop up bad governments or military regimes that are now long gone. Some of the loans were wasted by the governments that received them. Some were given by rich countries in ways that served their own self-interest. Whatever the reason, today the poorest countries are saddled with debts they have to pay back at the expense of their own people. Many democratically elected governments are stuck with the debts racked up by the dictators that ruled before them. Skyrocketing interest rates and bad economic policies have multiplied these old debts over and over again. Nigeria, for example, originally borrowed $5 billion worth of debt from foreign governments and institutions; it has already paid back $16 billion and still owes $32 billion. Over the past few years, thanks to the efforts of those who contributed to the international Jubilee 2000 movement for debt relief, politicians have begun to respond to the debt crisis. In 1999, the richest countries promised to make sure that $100 billion of poor countries debt would be written off through the World Bank and International Monetary Fund’s Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) program. So far, 23 African countries have qualified for some relief and have received approximately $25 billion in long term debt relief. As a result, these countries paid almost $1 billion less on debt in 2002 than they did in 1998. The money is being put to good use. For example, Uganda — the first country to benefit from debt relief — used money freed up by debt cancellation to double primary school enrollment and invest in their national HIV/AIDS plan which has contributed to Uganda’s successful reversal of HIV infection rates. Mozambique’s debt relief has enabled the government to immunize a half million children. Tanzania eliminated fees for grade school, and Benin eliminated school fees in rural areas, allowing thousands of children to attend classes for the first time. Nevertheless, huge debts remain and Africa still owes rich countries almost $300 billion. Debt relief so far has resulted in the amounts African countries pay on their debt each year being cut on average by just one third. This is partly because some countries, including the US, UK, France and Germany, are canceling all the debt owed by these countries, but other nations and creditors like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund are not. WHAT MUST HAPPEN Africa’s poorest nations need much deeper debt cancellation, starting with those which have already pledged to use the money to fight poverty. Canceling all their debts would cost each citizen of the richest countries approximately $1.70 per person per year. We need to ensure that no impoverished African country is spending more on old debts to the richest nations than on the health, education and welfare of its people.
  2. Given the frequency and virulence of the Ethiopian raids, it was natural that the first pan-Somali or Greater Somalia effort against colonial occupation, and for unification of all areas populated by Somalis into one country, should have been directed at Ethiopians rather than at the Europeans; the effort was spearheaded by the Somali dervish resistance movement. The dervishes followed Mahammad Abdille Hasan of the puritanical Salihiyah tariqa (religious order or brotherhood). His ability as an orator and a poet (much-valued skills in Somali society) won him many disciples, especially among his own clans The British dismissed Hasan as a religious fanatic, calling him the "Mad Mullah." They underestimated his following, however, because from 1899 to 1920, the dervishes conducted a war of resistance against the Ethiopians and British, a struggle that devastated the Somali Peninsula and resulted in the death of an estimated one-third of northern Somalia's population and the near destruction of its economy. One of the longest and bloodiest conflicts in the annals of sub-Saharan resistance to alien encroachment, the dervish uprising was not quelled until 1920 with the death of Hasan, who became a hero of Somali nationalism. Deploying a Royal Air Force squadron recently returned from action in combat in World War I, the British delivered the decisive blow with a devastating aerial bombardment of the dervish capital at Taleex in northern Somalia. ***** Mohammed bin Abdullah Hassan, better known as the Mad Mullah, was born in the interior of Somaliland, some say at Kirrit, in the late sixties, his father aSomali, his mother a Somali of another tribe. His boyhood was much like that of other Somali boys, spent sometimes with his fellow-tribesmen and their stock in the interior, sometimes in Berbera. Now and again, perhaps, he voyaged in some friendly buggalow carrying Somali produce, hides and ghee and sheep, to Aden and the Arabian coast. Be this as it may, when he was about seventeen or eighteen, he determined to see the world, and is said to have enrolled at Aden as a fireman in one of the liners plying between East and West. His employment in this capacity must have greatly influenced his future career. For, doubtless, at Egyptian ports in native caravanserais he often listened awestruck to many a strange story of the Mahdi from the mouths of refugees from the Sudan. Following on his experiences at sea, Mohammed having now fully attained to man's estate, made the pilgrimage to Mecca - a journey which is the common ambition of all Somalis. So impressed was he by what he heard and saw that he made several subsequent journeys to the sacred city, joining the Mohammed Salih, an insignificant but fanatical sect, whose tenets are of a harsh and uncompromising nature as compared with those of the Qadariyah, which is the predominant sect in Somaliland. On his return from the last of these pilgrimages in 1895, he gained some notoriety in Berbera by denouncing certain practices of the Kadariyah to somewhat bored and unsympathetic audiences. With all the strident fervency of a born agitator he would inveigh against the luxury of the age, the immorality of chewing " kat," or the gluttony of gorging the fat of sheep's tail. For a living he depended upon the alms of the charitable; and there is an old Arab woman in Berbera who has often wondered whether he would repay the four annas she lent him in the days of his need should the opportunity ever came. He gained but few adherents among the comparatively sophisticated inhabitants of Berbera, and so in 1899 he repaired to the interior, where he lived in the Nogal valley among his mother's kin. Here he started a movement advocating the expulsion of the British infidel from his Mohammedan country. Many adherents Looked to his banner. Some were fired by his religious and political teaching. Others were attracted by promises of the wealth to be gained by raiding the stock of those tribes which espoused the infidel's cause, others again were inspired by a dual motive, religious and material: they saw an admirable opportunity to lay up for themselves treasure in the Mohammedan paradise by confiscating other tribes' treasure upon earth. For three years the Mullah disciplined his follower", eradicating the tribal feeling, which is normally one of the chief characteristics of the Somalis, and substituting his own authority for that of the elders of the tribes. Then early in 1899 he perpetrated his first overt set of hostility to the British Government. Suddenly swooping down upon Burao, a considerable native centre some eighty miles from Berbera, he raided the wealthy northern tribe, and forced a section of the northern clan to join him. After the raid, his fighting men were estimated to number 3000. To resume, the Mullah followed up his first coup of April 1899 by a further successful foray against the Habr Yunis in August, and he reoccupied Burao with a force estimated at 5000 men. He gave himself out as the Mahdi; and ominous rumours spread foretelling an advance on Berbera. The Consul General urged an expedition on the Home Government, but our commitments elsewhere, more particularly in south Africa, were such as to preclude the immediate adoption of this course. During the first seven months of 1900, the Mullah was comparatively inactive, but in August he suddenly swooped down upon the Aidegalla tribe and caused all the friendly tribes to evacuate the Haud in confusion. Next month the northern tribe suffered severely at his hands. It would be superfluous to discuss here in any detail the campaigns which followed. They are exhaustively described in the Official History of the Operations in Somaliland, 1901-04, published by the War Office in 1907; and it will be sufficient for the purposes of this paper to outline very briefly the general course of events. The first expedition started in April 1901, and operations terminated in the following July. The force employed consisted of a locally-enlisted and hurriedly-trained levy of 1500 men, of whom 500 were mounted. The casualties inflicted on the Dervishes were estimated at some 1200 killed and wounded, and, in addition, 800 prisoners were taken, including some notable headmen. The Mullah's power had thus been appreciably shaken, and for a time he remained quiescent. But not for long. In October 1901 he renewed his activities, and, thanks to the illicit arms traffic, he had, by January 1902, not only recovered from his losses, but had forced the majority of the north eastern tribe to return to his standard. By the time our second expedition was launched in June 1902, his following was estimated at 15,000, of whom 12,000 were said to be mounted and 1500 armed with rifles. Against this, our Expeditionary Force consisted of some 2000 rifles, partly King's African Rifles, but principally locally enlisted and locally- trained Somalis. During this expedition, which culminated in the severe but successful action fought at Erigo in October 1902, the Dervishes sustained some 1400 casualties, lost a large number of prisoners and some 25,000 camels, in addition to many sheep, cattle, and horses. But disorganized transport and the shaken moral of the Somali levies prevented the pursuit of the Mullah to his retreat in the Mudug district. It was now evident that the situation was such as to demand regular and seasoned troops. At the time of the action of Erigo, the force in Somaliland had consisted of 2400 rifles, of which no less than 1500 were local levies. This force was immediately increased by a further contingent of 900 King's African Rifles, and by 300 Indian infantry. A strong column was to advance from Obbia in Italian Somaliland and occupy the Mudug. Another column was to operate on the Berbera-Bohotleh line. And, simultaneously, an Abyssinian fores of 5000 rifles, accompanied by British officers, was to advance along the Webi Shebeli, to prevent the Mullah's retreat westward. The advance from Obbia commenced on the 22nd February 1903; and the enemy immediately fell back on Walwal and Wardair, denying us an opportunity of trying conclusions with his main force. On two occasions, however, small advance parties engaged large forces of Dervishes. At Gumburu, a reconnaissance of two companies of the 2nd King's African Rifles and 48 rifles of the 2nd Sikhs came up with the Mullah's main force, commanded, so it is said, by their chief in person. The fight which ensued appears to have lasted two and a half hours. The Dervishes charged the British square from dense bush some 300 to 600 yards distant, their horsemen and riflemen being driven back time and again with cruel losses. The square was eventually broken by a rush of spearmen, but not before all our ammunition had been exhausted. The Dervish casualties, estimated by some at 2700, are unknown: for no British officer survived to tell the true story of Gumburu. Our casualties were all officers (9) and 187 men killed and 29 men wounded. Another action at Daratoleh - in which were engaged some 800 Dervishes, flushed with their victory at Gumburu, with their leaders wearing the uniforms of the dead British officers - resulted in the infliction of heavy casualties on the enemy, our losses amounting to 2 officers and 13 men killed, and 4 officers and 25 men wounded. In the meantime the Abyssinians inflicted a crushing defeat on the Dervishes, claiming to have killed 1000 of their spearmen. Immediately after this engagement, which took place on the 31st May 1903, the Mullah made a daring but successful movement eastward to the Nogal valley. Unfortunately, however, it was impossible to intercept this movement, as, owing to camel transport and other difficulties, our troops were being withdrawn to Bohotleh. His Majesty's Government now derided on a further increase to our force in Somaliland in view of the Mullah's position in the Nogal and its proximity to our sphere. More than 8000 troops, of which 1000 were British, were employed, in the hope that the Mullah's power would be permanently shattered. The enemy's force, which numbered between 6000 and 8000 fighting Dervishes, was concentrated at Jidballi, where the Mullah, deriding to make a stand, received a most crushing defeat. His casualties in the actual fight at Jidballi (both January 1904) must have been very large; but far greater were his losses during the course of his subsequent flight northwards to Jidali, and thence eastward into Italian territory. On the other hand, our casualties were slight, except in officers, of whom 3 were killed and 9 wounded, out of a total of 27 killed and 37 wounded of all ranks. It appears that the Mullah only sought sanctuary in Italian territory after receiving solemn assurances of a safe passage from Osman Mahmoud, the Sultan of the Bari , the Italian Somali tribesmen, who was equally solemnly pledged to us to prevent him from crossing the Italian frontier. Had it not been for this breach of faith, the Mullah would doubtless have had no alternative but to surrender Thus, this fourth expedition was completely successful in all but bringing the Mullah himself to bay, and so putting an end to his movement. The greater portion of his wealth, which among a desert dwelling nomad people consists of the flocks and herds upon which their very existence depends, had been captured. The moral of his Dervishes as a fighting body had been utterly destroyed; and their numbers, estimated at 6000 to 8000 before Jidballi, could not have exceeded 800 on the conclusion of the campaign. Above all, the Mullah's personal prestige was temporarily shattered; and the discredited refugee in Italian territory must have out a poor figure as compared with the defiant enemy who, during the third expedition, indited the following letter to the British people: - I wish to rule my own country and protect my own religion. If you will, send me a letter saying whether there is to be peace or war. I intend to go from Burao to Berbera I warn you of this - I wish to fight with you. I like war, but you do not. God willing, I will take many rifles from you, but you will get no rifles or ammunition from me. I have no forts, no houses, no country. I have no cultivated fields, no silver, no gold for you to take. I have nothing. If the country were cultivated or contained houses or property, it would be worth your while to fight. The country is all jungle, and that is of no use to you. If you want wood and stone, you can get them in plenty. There are also many ant-heaps. The sun is very hot. All you can get from me is war - nothing else. I have met your men in battle, and have killed them. We are greatly pleased at this. Our men who have fallen in battle have won paradise. God fights for us. We kill, and you kill. We fight by God's order. That is the truth. We ask for God's blessing. God is with me when I write this. If you wish for war, I am happy; and, if you wish for peace, I am content also. But if you wish for peace, go Solvay from my country back to your own. If you wish for war, stay where you are. Hearken to my words. I wish to exchange a machine gun for ammunition. If you do not want it, I will sell it to some one else. bend me a letter saying whether you desire war or peace." In March 1905, the Illig or Pestalozza Agreement was concluded between the Italian Government and the Mullah, whereby peace was declared between the Dervishes on the one hand and the British and Italian Governments on the other. The Mullah was assigned a port and certain territories in Italian Somaliland, beyond which he and his Dervishes undertook not to encroach. The Mullah also agreed to become an Italian protected subject. This agreement was, however, nullified soon after it was concluded, as the Mullah left Italian territory, and by 1907 had re-established himself on the British side, raiding and looting far and wide.
  3. Presently, a myriad of Somali website and forums continue to filter the Internet with ever more increasing tales of Somali humanitarian catastrophes that are far beyond comprehension. Somalia is certainly one of the worst and most dangerous places to live in the world. This is so because everything in Somalia including politics, economy, and healthcare and even sport events is heading in the wrong direction: absolute downfall and disarray. The political leaders of our country continue to be shortsighted selfish thugs who are only more interested in personal fame and promote hateful and divisive policies that sanction more sufferings and the backwardness Yet in these desperate times, Somalis in the Diaspora who are at an advantage and somewhat well positioned and equipped to forge revolutionary change in Somalia, remain divided along clan lines or are somewhat detached from the realities of Somalia. Some of this hideous impassiveness is manifested in forums and sites run by Somalis in the diaspora. How we could make use of cyper forums for the betterment of our miserable state of affairs instead of just bickering and basing every site along clan and regional lines. Most sites are advocating for the same primitive clannish convictions of the warlords and their illiterate nomadic followers. Can we form a site that is progressively ground-breaking and free of unreasonable partiality to prop up new visions to unravel our tribulations?
  4. Baashi thanx for the definitions: Qabyaalad or Qabiil is all the same in the Somali sense of the word and the two go hand in hand. Renouncing one will lead to the elimination of the other. ---- Nationalist - Here is a topic to research: ASABIYAH IN ISLAM & PRE-ISLAMIC JAHILIYAH IN MECCA, FEMALE INFANTCIDE.. ---- The pre-Islamic Arabia was in darkness. The So called noble Qureish of Mecca you are talking about aren’t they the ones that practiced infanticide - killing their newborn female daughters alive, that owned slaves and women as just mere chattels. God in his wisdom choose Prophet Muhammad to revolutionize and enlighten these backward tribes of Arabia. --- " Each generation must, out of relative obscurity, discover its mission, fulfill it, or betray it" - Frantz Fanon, "Wretched of the Earth"
  5. From the discussions here, I make out that the clan syndrome has been institutionalized internally here and has irreversible imprints in our whole psyche. it is hard for some to even re-consider other alternatives because of pessimism and the impracticality of my proposition.( assuming that is how they perceive new challenging ideas ) This really underlines not only that we need to be reconciled as a people but to be educated.( bottomline, maybe re-brain washed or de-brainstromed, re-programmed mentally, our memories erased.. - call whatever you like). There seems to be strong support for the continuation of the Qabiil and some here has even made some blasphemous statements about our beloved prophet, may peace be upon him. people seem to have limited knowledge of our beautiful religion. it seems our whole vision is confined by the clan. Qabiil and its violent factionalism is a disease that needs to be cured through a progressive education. Just ask yourself what Qabiil has done for you so far? Did it ever accord you a full privilege, success, accomplishment? Did it made you gain knowledge and progress? The only thing it has done for all of us is division, hate, envy, animosity, fratricide, genocide, poverty, backwardness, constant violence, civil wars and above all destruction of our homeland? Please tell me, for those of you who advocate for it, what is good about such a vicious institution? renouncing ignorance and primitive systems is the way out.

  7. Somalis, I call for ideas of how practically we could renounce and divorce ourselves from this primitive qabiil structure. Just, I would like to open a discussion about it. I have some ideas and thoughts of how but I would like to observe what others think of it. Just a personal reflection and soul searching is needed here. Let us all avoid to be biased and steer clear of prejudices. Let us all use our human rationale, gut feelings, common sense and the god given intellect. let us open the discussions here ---
  8. Question- why is it that everyone wants to become a minister? Answer - government position will let you maintain a lavish lifestyle. a government official can have new villas and comfortably support two/four households by keeping atleast the new minyaro in Somalia and letting the minwayn collect welfare in europe or America. - some of the parliamentarians are paupers struggling to make ends meet by deceitful and unethical means. - siphoning government money into private accounts is a deeply well established practice in Somali government circles. - Unfortunately, that money will be begged from donor countries to build and restore the destroyed infrastructure (e.g., schools and hospitals
  9. what a shame? we may have lost few dozen fishermen in this tsumani disaster but to ask relief for this while other Asian countries lost more than 50 thousand is very shameful and selfish. it seems like they are taking advantage of it and riding the bandwagon. they are all after few handouts. even after the assessment is done, i bet the death toll and the whole devestation would be minuscle compared to the huge tragedy that engulfed nations like Indonesia and Sri-lanka.

  12. The Somali clan system is a primitive structure that divides people into rival groups. It spread through our social fabric to the core. It created conflicts and clashes. Because of the clan animosity we destroyed our nation and more than one million innocent lives were lost while more than two million Somalis become dispossessed. What is so appalling and disgusting about the clan system of the Somalis is it will never disappear. Our parents and elderly people are illiterate and ignorant nomadic folk who know nothing else but the clan system and they still plant the seeds of discord, divisiveness and hatred in our minds on daily basis. we can't escape of this fact. i have witnessed it and experience it. the clan sentiments still play big role in our lives even here in the Diaspora. Here in this forum we have clannish people promoting the interest of their particular clan. Their whole rational and logic is based on it. They can't liberate themselves from its shackles. The clan has impaired their god give intellect. These people go to universities and institutions of higher learning in the developed world but still think like geel jirayaal. the clan politics still haunts us even here in this lousy forum. we have those who defame and accuse other clans. we have those who support their clannish so called politicians and advocate for them. that is really depressing and disappointing. We can't get rid of the clan system no matter how hard we try to educate our people about its backwardness and destructiveness. We are all confused about it and have no clue how to deal with it. If we want to make our country a progressive and modern one, we must do away with the clan and its vices. We are all one same big family and we can live in peace together and prosper togather. We have to understand we are all brothers and sisters and not members of particular clan. Let us all reject the tribalism of our forefathers and see each other as Muslims and Somalis first. We have all one destiny and that is to make our country, Somalia a peaceful prosperous one. In the holly Quran it says: " WaiAtasimoo bihabli Allahi jameeAan wala tafarraqoo waothkuroo niAmata Allahi Aalaykum ith kuntum aAdaan faallafa bayna quloobikum faasbahtum biniAmatihi ikhwanan wakuntum Aala shafa hufratin mina alnnari faanqathakum minha kathalika yubayyinu Allahu lakum ayatihi laAallakum tahtadoona." " And hold fast, all together, by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah's favour on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye became brethren; and ye were on the brink of the pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus doth Allah make His Signs clear to you: That ye may be guided. "
  13. Once upon a time there was a small village in Shabelle region. The village was located just beyond the corner in Webi Shabeelle. Most of the residents of the village were hardworking farmers and faithful compassionate Muslims. They were all close knit community. One day, the kids of the village playing soccer at the side of the river become aware of three human bodies floating in the river; they called their elders for help. Adult Men of the village hurried to the scene to pull the three bodies out the water. Unfortunately, the first body they pulled out was dead man, so they buried him immediately. The second person was a lady, probably his wife and she was too ill, so they took her to small village nursery and the last person was a young healthy girl. The elders of the village decided to place her in a foster home where she blossomed into a beautiful young lady. From that day on and for a number of years to come, quite a lot of bodies came floating down the river on a daily basis. The poor people of the town became quite proficient at rescuing and taking care of these bodies. These incidents continued for years and the people of the village worked out a highly structured tradition to salvage bodies and tend them in nurseries and foster homes. People were very generous with their time and resources. Some gave up their daily occupation completely so as to devote themselves to this humanitarian recue work of saving floating bodies from the river. Because of this charitable work, the people of the village felt a sense of pride. They built orphanages for the kids whose parents died in the river and took care of the rescued ladies and arranged a marriage for them. They set up a council to take of these floating people and formed a rescue team. Despite their generosity, no one ever thought about crossing to the other side of the river just to find out where these bodies were coming from and how they ended up floating in the river? moral of the story: kids let us see what you come up with...??
  14. excerpts from Seleda " So, last time I checked, I was faring well with the six out of the seven deadly sins. You know: pride, envy, avarice, gluttony, anger, covetousness. But without any surprise, the last one, lust, the one that guarantees a spot in a boiling pot somewhere in the nether regions of Satan's abode, is the one I have a major problem with. It is the one sin I succumb to and try to give myself over to completely. After all, what kind of a God puts the most deliciously gratifying thing in our face and expects us to follow complicated rules or strongly recommends that we not touch? Reflecting back to when I reached the dawn of a new state of mind following a period in my life marked by confusion, I am glad now that I feel settled and have acquired a new sense of clarity about lust that I had not had before. Maybe glib on my part, but my reference to clarity may be construed as justification of my shortcomings and the shortcomings of society… as well as my attempt to quell the turmoil caused by contradictions and hypocrisies of the social order within my mind. Actually, it is not just a justification but also an acceptance to obey my propensities endowed to me by Mother Nature. The shortcomings (no pun intended here), the contradictions, the restrictions, the social pressures, the taboos and the justifications are all part of the story of a repressed, horny Ethiopian apprentice of life, who went on a journey to differentiate between love and sex. With that said, let me go back to the time just before the end of my troubled years. Back then I was a dejected fellow always contemplating the rights and wrongs of the world, always wondering why I feel what I feel for the opposite sex. Then, all of a sudden, my long pondering came to an end with a realization that was profound… at least to me. I pulled the wool that was over my eyes and finally came to terms with infidelity and lust. They have always been part of humanity right there from the beginning of time, concealed and disguised in layers of religious edicts and fabricated social norms. Ok, it might not sound like an "eureka" moment, but I want you to understand that the simplicity in accepting lust and infidelity as natural entities is truly a liberating experience. So I urge you to become and an apostate for a moment and take a plunge with me and indulge the world. Here we go… Not unlike the framers of the US constitution who understood the importance of separation of church and state, it is very crucial to understand the separation of Love and Sex. The two must be considered two unique entities. In other words, emotions that come with relationships, love, etc… should be independent of the pleasures generated by intercourse. Everybody knows that love is long lasting and deep. It is the connection between individuals of the highest level. It is more of a spiritual joining that is beyond the physical world. Sex, on the other hand, is nothing but the icing on the cake. It would be nice to have good sex with the one you love but there are numerous circumstances where love is sustained without sex. So why do people make sex such a freaking big deal???? Ok… calm down… Now allow me to assume that sex is not a big deal… With that established, consider this scenario. Your most loved one was gulled by lust and had sex with another individual, who he/she does not love. What would be your response? Are you going be deranged by jealousy and go on a rampage or are you going to calm down, analyze the situation logically and forgive your mate full heartedly? Yes, you'd be deranged. It's the common response considering that in moments like this, our thinking is clouded by emotions. One thing to remember: decisions based on emotions have led many a fool to great depression, embarrassment or even a trip to the slammer, or, even worse, six feet under. But if one evolves beyond petty emotional BS, then sex is nothing but a source of pleasure. No more horrid than eating a Snickers candy bar. Lust on many levels, is the opposite of love. It is like the beautiful fireworks in the night. You see the bright colored flashes rise up to the sky and explode, and then, just like it came so suddenly it disappears in the night. It doesn't last long, and you know if it did last longer it wouldn't be fun. And that's why committed and married people have secret one-night stands and impromptu sex when the opportunity provides. But in the whole scheme of things, the feeling of love is most likely unaffected. It is all about the hit and run baby. For guys, it is a futile battle to restrain the third leg. It is known to have its own head which is usually more coercive than the one carried on our shoulders. Females, on the other hand, are more illusive with their physical manifestation of their emotion and therefore appear much better at restraint. However, I am not going to pretend to be an expert in female psychology or for that matter their physiology. So I am not going to get into it. However, when it comes to the male species, how many of our fathers have cheated on our moms? Tell me how many of those bars in Addis are really brothels? How many of us met our half sibling at our father's funeral for the first time… the list goes on. That is how the story went since time immemorial, and it will persist long after we are gone. So no matter how much we sweep it under the rug, sexual infidelity will always exist. It might be crazy, but I am advocating regression of the humane psyche back to our animal ancestors at least in terms of sex and start using our medulla oblongata more than our frontal lobs. For a change, be more like dogs… huh? Ok, that might be a little too extreme but we don't even have to go that far in the evolutionary scale. Just look at our recent ancestors… like our grandfathers. I am talking about the first half of the twentieth century people. Whats up with the CHn gered and wushima, and the generous spilling of zer, all at the timid consent of our grandmothers… I know, I know with all the patriarchal system, women being powerless and all, but still… if you look at our society as a whole, it seems like they tolerated the basic undying human need to mate and understood the principle of the separation of Love and Sex. I mean are we losing our senses when we are becoming more "civilized", "westernized" and "individualized"? Are we becoming more inclined to be more physically possessive of others? What is going on? Anyway, one thing I am sure of, for all you females out there, when you get into relationships I would say at least 99.9% of the men will at some point consider cheating on you. If your mate doesn't, then he probably belongs in a monastery or he is an absolute faker. So I say, instead of denying it in our society and our personal lives, we should embrace it and accept it as a truth. When we realize Sex and Love are separate, we can move forward and add understanding to the whole mix. If love is truly the highest form of connection between two individuals then they should rise above extra-marital lusting and adultery. That is how true love is tested. That, of course, is assuming that there is some responsibility and that no one is bringing back any disease. So accepting the fact that cheating is eminent in most relations, the thing to do is to stop fighting it and allow it to exist so it can easily be managed and regulated much like alcohol, drugs and prostitution. Fighting against infidelity and lust is much like the U.S' war against drugs, it is futile no matter what restriction and measures the government, institutions and the society impose on its people. 15. The intriguing characteristic of today's Somalia lunacy is its unorthodoxy and obtrusive contradictions. Let us see if they learn from their past gaffe. it's now time for warlord Yusuf and his subdued prime minister Ghedi to reduce the size of the government for efficiency and efficiency. the imperative call for the so called leaders here to limit the number of ministers. ministries should be merged and not split to appease warlords and clans.
  16. I hope they learn from their blunder and muddle. there are always checks and balances in democracy. The Somali legislative branch has done a very laudable act today. it is a first in Africa and I hope the executive branch - that is the presdient and the prime minister and his cabinet respect the decision of the parliament. this the same parliament that crowned Yusuf as the president of the Nation. I do emphasize though the need for a just judiciary branch that uphold the supramacy o the constitution . Well, I guess president warlord Yusuf and his new prime minsiter will come up with an alterantive approach and not follow the same short-sighted missteps. we need an effective balanced government that could function and re-establish the rule of law in our choatic country. i don't care whether they are all from one region or the other. they have to be limited to maybe 18- and follow for the 4.5 formula for the time being until we will have a modern institution of elections based on census and the electoral vote of the regions rather than the clan power sharing. They should also consider the territorial integrity of our country and encourage these somali regions to join the government. Ethiopia should not dictate our affairs at all. The will of the Somali people should always be paramount and should drive all branches of the government. That is not a gruelling and challenging task to do. we are all the same boat here and we need not to let the boat sink this time. we can't afford another setback. The parliament also should re-evaluate the laws they already broke such as giving Somali women their constitutional rights and above all their share of 12% and maybe increase it to- if not 50% - to 25% They also should consent that educated somalis to take part the reconstruction and reconcilliation process.
  17. We have erstwhile clannish president, one of the principal players of the Somali holocaust and the destruction of our nation. We have a subdued amateurish hand-puppet as prime minister. We have the largest cabinet, full of brutal warlords and preposterous portfolios. We have illiterate clan minded parliamentarians. We have hostile and opposed clans all competing to dominate government positions. We have a secessionist region, committed to the dogmatic cause of clan reign. That is the status quo so far. we are all here to discuss this tit for tat ignorance! in the meantime we all know we are heading to the same cyclical way of mayhem and chaos. Another civil war is looming large and this one is going to be more catastrophic. Warlord president is a man on mission. He is going to launch a new reprisal undertaking. With the help of the Ethiopian army and his clan militias, he is determined to wreak havoc in every region of Somalia. While he may not accomplish to dominate and subjugate others, he will definitely create more turmoil and bloodshed. Unfortunately, many of his educated clan elites are collaborating and working for this contemptible warlord president and have discarded their commonsense and education for egotistical clan interests. Loyalties to the clan creed have impaired their political outlook. It seems they are once again repeating the same disastrous formula for governance and leadership. It seems that they can’t learn from the past and are all unwavering to concede failure. They just don’t know how to get rid of clan allegiance. Nation building is an alien concept to them and they are convinced that it’s their inherent nature to lead. Tell me my fellow Somalis, how on earth we will ever be a modern nation if you are all applauding and perpetuating this tribal ignorance. I am challenging you all, especially those of you who devotedly post on this lousy forum, to come up with a better alternative vision, unlike this avenging clan predicament.
  18. 40-45 cabinet ministers? what a joke!!! this is to appease some mogadishu clans and bigshot players who were left out of the game? Ulusooow will have wasiirka sanuudda iyo sarifka lacagaha qalaad?. gacmadheere will have wasiiirka dhuxusha iyo qoryaha? cabdikariim ali axmed will have wasiirka cara-maanyaddda iyo bacaadka? ina-liiqliiqato ( or some one from his clan in the parliament ) will have wasiirka qashin aruurinta iyo nadaafadda? what you will do with somaliland group? create more bogus portfolio? wasiirka la dagaalanka cayayaanka iyo shimbiraha? wasiirka dharka iyo maacuunta? wasiirka maqaayadaha iyo biibitooyinka? wasiirka budka iyo bakooraddaha? wasiirka muufadda iyo maraqa? wasiirka qaadka iyo geeyrasheeynta? this is a farce!! you can't build a nation with Qabiil. criminal warlords and illiterate clannish nomads have no clue about governance. it is an alien concept they can't still grasp what it really means. forming a clan assembly for them and maybe having a bi-polar form of government where abdullahi and his cronies will deal with Qabiil and the other government will consist of educated modern somalis with no clan allegiance! that would have been a better comedy!!
  19. i think mr Tarax was the head of the western Somali liberation front ( Somali refugees ) and the head of Hayadda Qaxootiga Soomaalida galbeed. he is from Dhagaxbuur in the Somali section of Ethiopia .
  20. Abdullahi Yusuf is the erstwhile clannish crony who still is caught in the old archaic mentality of clan animosity. He is not in tune with modernity and nation building. This clan baron wants to settle scores and create more mayhem and carnage among the people of Mogadishu. I anticipate gloomy days coming. Forget about peace, unity, harmony, reconcilliation and compromise as long as we have a vile warlord as aleader. These words are not even in his vocabulary. the distressing thing is that his whole clique have no other vision other than to dominate and pursue policies of dissarry. i had been informed that his immediate sub-clan is involved in the Gelinsoor hostilities and provinding arsenal to both sides. I somehow trust that the people of Mogadishu and Hargeisa will understand the clannish octogenarian’s undertakings and not be deceived into jingoism and idle talk of patriotism. I hope they come up with a better alternative to save the nation.
  21. i am just discovering the beauty and depth of the Somali oldies and am loving it day after day! i am just tired of the lone cranky keyboard that the copycats of waji-xumayaal are innundating us with. to me Magool, Dhuule and Tubeec are LEGENDS --- This special song is amazing -- u only need to hear it- i have an old tape - with a collection of Somali songs alla Qaaci and Cuud - Subcis and Waayo waayo- this song and another by Tubeec called Xaawo are the best- what a great treasure! i am sorry for those who can't appreciate and understand the beautiful mysticism in the lyrics
  22. an excerpt by Rhoda A. Rageh The song is simply a message addressing all that bind lovers. Its amorous thrums reveal a healthy relationship between lovers. That profuse “ deaf woman†paradigm of male courting is humanized with sensual seductive, soothing strokes. 23. November 29, 2004 - 23:48 In Loving Memory of “Magool†“A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song†We all lost someone especial when the Queen left us earlier this year. But her memories would never leave us. Some of us are able to impersonate singers but Magool was the real thing. She inspired a lot of today’s talents with her courage of expressing love through music and literature when such thing was still taboo in Somalia, especially for a woman. What is it that stands out in our memories of the queen? I, for one, it is the 27th of June 1977 the day Djibouti got its independence. Living in Mogadishu at the time as a teenager and listening the historic event on radio Mogadishu as Halimo sings with her impressively touching and sensational voice a never before heard and newly composed Republic of Djibouti National Anthem. Rumor has it that it was created on the spot. Huuh, What a talent? Those who new her well says, from a very young age her remarkable singing voice was apparent. It was both front and back loaded with catchy vibrations, especially her long throat singing sound-like tunes. It contains a variety of moods, tempos and sounds - the product of a legend reaching for the brass ring. Halimo has always been my favorite and still is perhaps for many. I never thought she came up short. The energy, the colorful expressions, the wink aimed at the silly boys, the way she articulates lyrics, every song without competition was a gift. She sang in a style that hadn't been heard before, with a soul touch for the bass note and a tap dance for the anticipated Uud-Guitar melody, and at a time when singers started copying her gifted talent "Under The Double clutch voice" with all the modern music instruments up behind them, this woman hunched down over the old band and made a singing line that was beautiful and treasured. They could not touch it. She made mediocre musicians play excellent piece of music. She could sing like a teenager in her first love or a grownup woman with a broken heart. She could articulate life of violent emotions, vivid love life, celebration of pleasure or acute capacity for sadness, all, in a lyrics filled with changing tunes and zealous expressions. There is something about Magool’s relaxing tunes that could always take your breath away." A poem begins with a lump in the throat; a homesickness or a lovesickness. It is a reaching out toward expression; an effort to find fulfillment. A complete poem is one where an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words. --Robert Frost Although the relative acclaim didn't translate for her to big financial successes, at least by the world standards, and she never enjoyed the fruits of her efforts, this woman was still magnificent. She was an artist and there was no slightest pretense in her. She sang traditional songs, and even composed a most romantic tribute to a lover. It is said that “Music is the purest form of art... therefore true poets, they who are seers, seek to express the universe in terms of music... The singer has everything within him or her. The notes come out from his or her very life. They are not materials gathered from outside. May the angels bear her up, and may eternal light shine upon her, and may she run into a lot of her old friends, whom gave us as much such as hers Omar Dhulleh, Ahmed and Mohamed Moge and the rest who all gave us everything they had for FREE. The question is, when the living legends, the likes of Hibo, Hassan, Khadra, Maandeeq,Sahra, Igal, Zainab Cigeh, Fadumo Qasin are gone, are we in the mercy of these electronic singers? No more passion? Play screw up Reruns after reruns? No more personality? I have seen people singing sad lyrics with the accompanying harmonic and still displaying smiling face. Haven’t they ever learned from Zeinab Cigeh? Discussing this subject with a friend of mine in London two weeks after Magool passed away in March this year, and he mentioned an event where one of these modern electronic singers even played “Sida Rucubka Naasahan Hadba Soo Ruxaayoo†the only problem is he said the singer was a man!! Respect for lyrics? Forget it. One thing these electronic singers can count on though, at least these people we call our kids in Diaspora don’t even give a dam. Let us try to celebrate the lives of our artists like Huryo (mainly known for his comic roles) but was a master composer and orchestrated most of the melodies of the top 50 Somali songs. They never got rich or even got the respect they earned. If Huryo was an American, he would be Richard Pryor and Quincy Jones combined. Let us carry with us forever the sprit and the love they had for their work, especially the one and the only, the queen, Halima Khalif “Magoolâ€. May your shadow pass in pirouettes - of such amazing grace, That the tears of those who mourn you – Disappear without a trace In a smoke that shapes their sorrow – to the fading of your feet In a ring around the rainbow – where the circle is complete." And my dearest queen of all queens, “MAY THE SUN SHINE WARM UPON YOUR FACE IN THE HEAVENSâ€. Thank you and good night. Abdirahman Waberi Washington, DC Awaberi44@aol.com
