Jacaylbaro Posted April 20, 2008 Professor Iqbal Jhazbhay, currently on sabbatical leave from the Department of Religious Studies and Arabic, was keynote speaker on the African Union and Somaliland's quest for self-determination at a seminar jointly arranged by the Centro de Direitos Humanos of the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, Maputo, and the Centre for Human Rights of the University of Pretoria. Academics, graduate students, policy-makers and the general public participated at this well-attended seminar. In London, Professor Jhazbhay addressed the annual general meeting of the world's oldest existing Somali society, the Anglo-Somali Society, on the contemporary politics of Somaliland with reference to its international relations; and also took part in a programme arranged on the occasion of the historic first official visit of Somaliland parliamentarians to the UK parliament. The prime focus of the meeting was to discuss ways to consolidate Somaliland's young democracy and efforts to mobilise the Somaliland diaspora. Professor Jhazbhay is currently based at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, as a visiting academic.
