Apostate puppets destroy more than 500 homes

Recommended Posts

Witnesses say hundreds of poor Somali families are being forcibly evicted from their homes near the airport.

The targeted place is an area around the former air force base and is about 100 yards (meters) from the airport's fence.

"I and my children will be here until we get a home," Fatima Osman Ali, a mother of six children told reporters.

Asha Madey said Friday that she spent the night in the open with her seven children after their two-room house was destroyed by security personnel with bulldozers.

Police spokesman Abdulahi Hassan Barise says the plan will continue until threats to Mogadishu's main airport are eliminated.

Earlier this week, Mogadishu's mayor had ordered around 1,000 Somali refugees to move away from the city's main airport, citing security concerns.

Mayor Abdurisaq Mohamed Nor suggested that insurgent group Al-Shabaab could use the refugees' shelters as cover to launch an attack on the airport.

The mayor said the structures were illegal and that he had "intelligence information" that some people were taking money from Al-Shabaab to build shelters.

"Only a single rocket-propelled grenade fire on a single plane could destroy the entire airport system - we will never accept or wait that to happen," he said.

Somali forces started to demolish the makeshift homes after the Somali president and his interior minister signed the order released by the mayor.

The BBC's Mohammed Olad Hassan in Mogadishu says most Afisoyoni residents have already fled fighting in other parts of the city.

The government says it will provide land for those whose homes have been destroyed but our reporter says there is no evidence of this.

He says the airport has come under attack several times in the past - but never from this suburb.
