Men's humiliation in maternity wards

Nowadays, the experience of child birth in Maternity wards seems to be humiliating for men, especially during the first child’s birth.

The humiliation experience is preceeded by fatique which starts few days before the actual visit to the Maternity ward when wife starts unusual chores of round the clock cleaning and home makeovers that deprive husband to have any meaningful sleep. Then for a reason most of us do not understand actual labour usually starts at around 2:00 A.M. While wife is in excruciatin pain, the delivery Nurse prepares the stage for the husband's humiliation by questioning wife if husband is ready to cut the umbilical cord and if she’s going to try ‘natural’ birth or will opt for the epidural. Not knowing wether the epidural procedure will cause harm to his unborn child, husband tells Nurse they will try natural and wife agrees only to change her mind while he is on his way to pick the sabaayad that her mom has been preparing for her.

Nine hours after their arrival to the hospital, and after many uncalled for insults for not agreeing to cut the umbilical cord, and few shouts of ‘I hate u, you did this to me’ that follow each contraction, and a half dozen trips from the hospital to such never-ending demands to bring baby clothes, xildiid iyo xabaasuud, a copy of the quran, couple of halimos to pickup, and shah iyo sinjibiil from her best friend he finally arrives only to see wife, half-naked, in an awkward posture while Anesthesiologist tries to maneuver a long syringe with a sharp needle in to her back.

Doctor tries to explain that wife has opted for the epidural and will be ready to deliver baby without any more pain. So this is the 'unnatural' child birth, husband thinks!

Not a minute after the epidural procedure contractions now seem to make her laugh. Instead of pain, she starts to hug everyone around her including the phlebotomist and the environmental technician who just arrived and was preparing to wipe off the floors. She laughs and giggles whenever Nurse tries to explain to her that her blood work including CBC, Urinalysis, and ABORH are all seem normal. Things that he don't understand but wife does especially since after her first dose of the epidural. She begs more of the ‘unnatural’ and Doctor gives to her willingly.

Husband’s suspicion increases by the minute. Instead of insults, contractions now seem to bring her joy. She even repeats his name over and over after each contraction and calls him ‘my hero', geesi baad tahay and sings a love song(khadra dahir ay qaado) in front of all.

Finally, the moment of waiting is over, his newborn girl arrives. He leaves Maternity ward with his wife, his newborn, and a large cardboard with a big footprint that he suspects to belong to his baby.
