  2. Samurai, it is great diservice to the intellect to two willingly perceptive people to agree upon everything, alas, i have indeed first time have to disagree with my esteemed fellow. Since it is quite late at night here in London, i shall post my stance on the sybject tommorow insha Allah.

    Good Night.

  3. SnW my dear fellow, recognising a hetitage and introducing a dailect as another language is far two different issue.

May is not a language independent from Somali language. Both May and Maxaa tiri are Somali;consequently the introduction of dailect as as a parallel language to Somali is a disgrace.

If we are going to celebrate our heritige (as you put it) then why not introduce other languages (notice the diff between language and deilect)that other Somali tribes speak- Gare for example?

  4. Always the people Yalahow hails from were the forerunners of political paradoy. The most famous Somali political satarist was none other than his brethen. My memory lets me down terribly when I need it most; bugger i can seem to remember his name.

I am sure Macruuf Akhiyaar would know him; since this satarist was thriving in 60s and 70s.

  5. Macruur Akhiyaar!

Akhii,What I have written up there was a quick reaction, after reading the so called agreement, my mind was jumping up and down. The whole thing is in shambles man.

    Demarcation of regional boundaries;

There are pacts of weakness (Federal State of Somalia), who is going to draw the map of the state borders, and what are their jurisdictions? What is the role of federal government? What is the role of these states? This system is going to be a source of all troubles. As you know this pact advances those groups that have established local administrations. What about those who haven't organized themselves or established their own clan administration? What does this pact say about them? Who decides, who is the state, and their borders/jurisdictions?

Since the whole federalism is going to be based on tribal areas, what is going to happen regions that two or more different clans inhabit; for example Sanaag or Mudug.?

The power sharing concept at the conference which states that Somalis are "four and half" clans groupings that doesn't reflect the concept of federalism, because clan formula and federal concept (contradicts each other). How are they going to reconcile? This is an indication of failure. Though I am praying that it will not fail.

Why can we (younger generation) go back and contribute?

Anyhow, let us see how this saga ends.

  6. Fellow Somalis,

Much as that we may debate about what is right for the day. We have today acquired identity of worst nature. Sunken eyes and weathered hands. Hungry mothers and futureless children are many among those we own as "Somalis". Like it or not names do not make any difference.

I, Hassan, am a refugee. a life member of what is known as the lost generation of Somalia. I am a minority in the heart of Europe and so shall who ever origins from me after.

Truely and honestly speaking from my heart and as a yong man who originates from Hargeysa, I love Somalia and Somali peole. I want freedom from hunger, absolute poverty and ignorance. A devided name such as Somaliland will not take me anywhere. I want be a Somali in skin and color.

I studied in Africa and too many poor countries is not what I desire be.

From a point of knowledge, it is worthy giving up your own jurisdiction (borderes)for your citizens to gain. I would even suggest that we should seek greater african Union than cuting the little we have into peices.

    Viva Somalia

  7. Samurai Sword

Such sagacious words make any man and women with ounce of wisdom applaud with elation. Samurai you have indeed quite brilliant exceedingly put your case, well done to you mate. The polymethic and wide-ranging it is not to mention the logical pattern it follows. Such is chap endowed with clear an shrewd mind. I applaud once again fro expressing what I have intended to say numerous times but time and perhaps shyness could not permit me.

    Timacadeh

Uuh such a noble name with a feeble and lackadaisical nature! It would be an ill-thought if I even try to respond to you. Unwind your shenanigans for this chap would not indulge you further.

    Ayoub Sheikh

Brother, the graves you refer to are housed by many of non Somalilanders (this of course does not mean the former British Somaliland). Some of these Somalis were murdered by current members of Hargeisa Adminstration. I can name few generals and captains at the time of the committed atroicies which obviously were carried out by your sons; these criminals are as follows: DhagaWeyne (he is from Berbera) Ina Kahin (Burco) Ina Mire and the other infamous Habane all these were spearheading the murderous acts that were commited in Mudug and Nugaal. Do you see people of these two regions wailing about that; the answer is no. Why then are the people of the Northwest obsessed with this victim-hood? Is it because their dead were more important tha that of other Somalis?

    The Awdal Atrocities

We are well aware of what SNM did to people of Awdal right after when the former dictator was ousted from Mogadishu. It has been documented numerous horror experiences that have been endured by the people of Awdal. Wasn't the SNM, spearheading an entire division of Mengistu's troops, slaughtered five hundred fifty innocent people in Borama, Dila and Zeila on February 4th, 1991? And when the SNM had occupied, with the "philanthropic" assistance of these troops and had inherited the ammunition dumps in the north west of Somalia, the first step they took was a deliberate clan-cleansing against the people of Awdal from their homes in Gebiley, Hargeisa, Arabsiyo. To humiliate further the people of Awdal, didn't they hijack their elders and took them first to Harar (Ethiopia) in April 1991 and later to Burao where they were intimidated to sign a "obligatory declaration of independence" that has been prepared directly by "Mengistu Haile Mariam". Two ex-Ethiopian generals, violating directly the sovereignty of the Somali State, were directing that so-called conference at Burao. Thus, by carrying out these odious deeds that are contrary to whatever values or culture we shared as Somalis since the last millennium, the SNM dealt a mortal blow to any bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood we shared.

Where was the Somaliness in that? You can not tell me I should not speak about these horrendous things because you think I am not from Awdal. The life of a Somali that is taken with such heinous manner pains me whichever clan they belong to. Do not get me wrong; I despise what the late dictator did to ALL those who suffered at his hands; but I am not going to promote my political agendas under some victim-hood like the Jews are cleverly doing in the world.

    Somiland as Independent State?

Come on now, border demarcation would have to take place if the people of Hargeisa and Burco want to break-away from the rest of Somalia. If they arguing that its their right to have sef-determination so as the people of SSH who made such a self-determination and made it public. Their fate lies with that of their beloved Somalis.

The Whole Somaliland thing is based upon injustices committed against one tribe in the north west. Okay people of SSH do not hold such a grudge against the Somalis consequently they shall remain in Somalia (that is the most logically lucid argument i have heard so far in this debate of Somaliland). Moreover, they indeed were supporters of Siyad Barre (do you know MOD, the latter word standing for the people of SSH). I don’t follow the logic that says we are going to break away because we have been wronged, killed and maimed; when the very people who have taken part (I am using collective guilt which is your favourite) such reside within the claimed territory of former British Somaliland? I just don’t follow it.

    Ameenah

Walaalo, you have indeed hit the nail on the head. We should all forgive and learn from our hideously ghastly past for lead a better life in our new Somali State.

  8. Inanity and lack of boldness not to mention overwhelming foolishness is what made this bunch of hoodlum to agree the most foolhardy historic landmark; that is to devise one more divisive element in our plighted nation. As largely agreed in the circle of social thought and agreeably expressed by that French social thinker Toqueville when he elegantly said "the tie of language is perhaps the strongest and most durable that can unite mankind" perhaps he was on high horse when he said mankind, but assuredly, it is the singular strong strand that hold Somalis together in this precarious times. It is a bond that many patriots through out the annals of Somali history have risked life and limb to preserve their common language, their orthography and even to certain extent their communal dialect. In our new Somalia, a country that in our hopeful thoughts will reborn with forceful power and restore our past glory; and now before the birth, a ceremony has taken place to assure that expected new born will be stripped off all the necessary elements that would potentially make strongly united and altogether healthy. And why this one might ask? I tell you why, because the insidious Sinicism that some pseudo political leaders hold. It is clear iniquity to our nation, a nation that has been recognized to be homogeneous; a fact that is yet to be logically contested.

Language has never been an issue for Somalis (including our brothers from Bay and Bakool); but why complicate things now. Isn’t it enough that we are now cocooned in our tribal huts, are we now being divided by sub and Soomaali or May or Maxaatiri. This is clearly a breeding ground for disunity. This disunity will be demonstrated vividly in political, societal and education system since alleged cultural differences was legalized in private and public life by these hoodlums. Somali language should have been left as it was- if this is matter of justice and fairness then we should then introduce the other ethnic languages like Baajuuni, Barawani and Garre as a national language. Or perhaps not; because the later groups have no forceful political weight; of course relatively that is, comparing May people. If this is the case, then surely this is indeed a tribal bigotry. Why promote certain dialects and repress others because some have more political weight. Where is the justice and fairness in that?

Obviously it is nothing to do with justice; it is nothing short than derisory political maneuver. If these people have thought about the implications of this move then surely they would not have done it. Then again one wonders if they can not predict the consequence of such grave political plunder whether they are fit enough to educate the delicate newborn baby? This is a legitimate question; one that needs an urgent answer.

Astonishingly enough, or perhaps it is not surprising at all, whenever you read about these frivolous, politically immature leaders you feel as though you have a moral responsibility to politically challenge them; but 'reality' permeates into the mind seducing it to enjoy the little comfort we have in our bugger cozy life (I doubt any self-respecting Somali would be happy to remain ethnic minority; in the Somali language that translated to Inan Gumeed; no one would accept such horrendously vile name in Somalia; though we quite happily accept in our respective western countries) in our western cities we live while these politically imprudent rule our beloved country with their political recklessness.

I have had delicious discussions (political discussions that are so scrumptious you can eat the words for much needed soul nourishment) with many young thoughtful Somalis in London whose following of the recent happenings in the Somali Peace conference is unrivaled. Most of these bright eyed, educated youngsters have one thing in common; their distaste of what is unwinding currently; but all are not bold enough to go back home and bring change. They entertain the idea that when a government is established they will go back and start the wise institutions that will foster wise governing. Such happy prospect blurs their otherwise lucid minds. What grantees do they have that such establishments would be allowed under these pathologically power hungry men? Would they just allow themselves to be cured by such a pathological condition?

If the answer to those questions are yes; then indeed the responder needs to read history, not only the Somali history (though it is blurred with half-truths) but the universal history concerning power changing in feudal society. It seems these young men and women are all falling pry to their naïve minds; or perhaps they don't fathom the complexity of change. In either case they are quite in hopelessness predicament.

Similar sorts of debates took place in cafes of the western capital cities filled with high minded African democrats. Their intellectual debate over the ability of democratic institutions to foster social and political change soon after the African independence foundered. Any political minded person with realism and pragmatic flair knows that social change requires a revolution. These pathologically power hungry ‘leaders’ would not easily let go their ‘pots of honey’ for some ‘educated’ young men with sound alternative governing.

History teaches us that untrained (theologically trained; unless the society he is governing are enlightened enough and have a political will power; something we Somalis are in greater need) man with a power is like raging bull. Leap back to the leadership (great leader but dictator) of Alexander the Great to our recent history; the late dictator Mohamed Siyad Barre who famously (infamously if you might) said that "when I leave the country, I shall leave it without a people to govern". Alexander died in battle and his empire crumbled within years, Siyad died in Exile and the result is what we have now. This is the true ageless nature of these untrained men who are currently trying to establish government in a foreign soil.

Unless and until the young bright educated wise girls and boys go back to our needy people and engage with them we shall remain in this self-created Newtonian inertia.

  9. I too have been displaced when I was similiar age to you (actuall couple years older=10)when we have looted killed maimed by USC militia in our homes in Mogadishu, but you don't see me going around formulating emotional diatribe; why? because I know people make terrible mistakes, but as humanbeings we should all forgive eachother and lookforward to a better future.

Anyhow, the mass graves you refer to in Hargeisa are those of the Somali Galbeed people. When it was discovered in 1995 ina Egal (alaha unaxariisto isaga iyo wixii muslim ah oo dhintey-ba) was intelligent enough to block the investigation for he knew only the discovery would be a damning one for the people of Hargeisa and Bruco. Brother, let us not blind ourselves; what has been done is done; we should think about our future as being united (in federal states; i all against this centralism for obvious reasons; those some might argue it is bad economics) nation that brings back its glorious past.

  13. Not to fathom the simplicity of your arguments is indeed a great fallacy that needs to be corrected. Man, I am neither old man with exhuasted powers or young boy with no training in the art of orotary. What you have written is up there and if you have read it carefully you the allusion you have given is what I refuted with vigour.

You can play with words with other but not with this old boy.

  14. Letters to the British FRom the much illuminated Hero Sayid Mohamed Abdullah Hassan my god bles hes beloved soul.

    -----

    1. The British administration received two undatedletters from the Sayyid (preserved here only in translation) on 15 April1905. The first one read: `Now I explain my meaning, that the Governmentgo out of my country in one hour'. The second one commented upon therumours about the railway: `We have heard however that you intend tomake a Railway and that is is being made in Berbera to take into theinterior wherever you wish it to go. We are not pleased at this and wethink that you have started peaceful proposals and treachery at the sametime. ... The very men who designed the War with us design now alsothis railway and for the very same purpose. ... If you wish to make arailway, make it from Zeyla to Mandaha towards Harar [the old caravanroute]'.6Compare for similar remarks Jardine, Mad Mullah,162-8 and PRO CO535, vol. 11.inal Arabic letters were kept in Somaliland, where most appear

4LIDWIEN KAPTEIJNSto have been lost. Although the translations (quoted extensivelyin Jardine's The Mad Mullah of Somaliland), more or less succeed in conveying the general meaning of the letters, the present Arabic text allows us to hear the Sayyid, as it were, `speak' Arabic. For scholarly conclusions about the Sayyid's Arabic, which was of course not his native tongue but the language of his education and religious training, we must await expert linguistic study. However, even impressionistically, the Sayyid's relatively high-brow, standard, and grammatically always correct Arabic, though with its distinct Egyptian and Sudanese ring, contributes another small clue to the life and character of this flamboyant historical personality.Arabic

8LIDWIEN KAPTEIJNS Translation "Praise be to God in all circumstances. Thereafter: this letter comes from Mu ammad b. fiAbd All h and all the Dervishes to GeneralSwayne. The objective of the letter consists of several things.First, we inform you that our people arrived and informed us that you treated them well. They informed us that you put the country14in order. Also, that you say that you will go away from the country, that is, from the Nugaal and Buuhoodleh and their envi-rons. At this we rejoiced greatly though our objective desire is for you to leave the whole of Somalia and eventually you will do so in peace or perhaps in force; the choice of course is yours. They also informed us that you have asked from us that no discord may arise ever. They also told us that you love us greatly and moreover praised you much. Now we let you know that we have accepted the peace settlement;we will not cause discord. If discord is caused by your people who are with you, we will inform you of this situation and will not move against them except after notifying you. We also let you know that the country is secure; no one is in fear of us. If anindividual or group comes from you to us, we will treat themwell. This is one issue.Secondly, we inform you that we are not like [other] people, for lying is forbidden to us, as are deceit, slander and greed. Youwill never see lies or deceit from us, because we are people ofthe Book, people of the sharifia, people of the truth, and people of God, and God has made lying, deceit, slander, greed and all evil deeds unlawful for us. If we tell you something, do not doubt it and do not ever let something different from what we14In Arabic the word `the country' occurs twice, undoubtedly by mistake.said enter your mind. This is another issue.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Page 9

A LETTER FROM MU AMMAD fiABD ALL H ASAN9Thirdly, I inform you that the people who are with you are evildoers and do not like the peace settlement in general or inparticular. They do not like the government; they want you to suffer loss, they covet your money and do not understand anything. They have two colours; at times they come to you and at othertimes to us. The greatest evildoers are those in whom you have put your trust, foremost fiAli fiUtübi15and all the fi qils . But Magan Am n is insolent. As for Müs Igarreh,16from him one hears only reconciliation and he does not like corruption and loss. If you want peace on all sides, then arrest the evildoers, most of all fiUtübi and thefi qils. Discipline Magan Am n. Don't discount my words, for my words are sincerity and truth. You will see the upshot of my words. This is another issue.Fourthly, don't listen to the words of slanderers; we, similarly, will not listen to their words. Know that we heard that they changed our words and our writing. They informed you that the Dervishes setout to attack you, but this is false. They want to cause trouble; you are witness to this. We also inform you that they wrote us a letter with no good in it, and it is shown in this way that they undermine your cause, so how would they not undermine my cause? I heard that God exposed them and that their lies were revealed to the admin-istration. This only occurred because of my [good] intention, my[honest] heart and the miraculous power that our mission is based upon. How would it be possible for me to be corrupt, while I am the wisest of people and the greatest in learning, intelligence, forbearance and conviction. Indeed, I wrote to you only good and kind [words]. I asked you to leave my land by your own choice and decision, without coercion or force. But what prompted me to mention `in one hour', which sowed doubt in your heart; what prompted me was only my love for my land. As for the15Spelled fiAtübi one time and fiUtübi another.16The Somali word igarrehmeans `the one who owns a she-camel whoseown offspring has been taken away from her but who is nevertheless milked for consumption by others'. It expresses the Sayyid's criticism ofMüs F ra 's service to the colonial government rather than (as the Sayyidwould put it) to his own people.mention of the railway, the people whose names and affiliations

    ------------

    That was the man.

  15. Years have elapsed since I have first become member of this highly esteemed forum. Never have I engaged political discussions, this of course stems from my intense aversion to the subject; but now that my corridor has been evaded I feel compelled to clear certain things out.

On the Subject of former British Somaliland

The territory which has been known as British Somaliland has never legally existed. The British enacted certain town place and after the much resistance from the gruelingly brave Mujahid he dared not to venture completely to hinterlands of these regions (Sanaag, Sool and Hawd); these regions have one thing in common- populated by one tribe.

When Mujahod was Defeated, the full control of these areas has never come into the hands of the Smelly Brits but indeed it remained to uncontrolled by them.

Then the honour of happiness which the Daraawiish fought came ; 26 JUNE 1960 the independence was granted and we all have been jubilant—the realization that the people of SSH will once more join their brethren (yes and I am talking about blood here, no sentimentally bullshite) that unification has become sacred from that day on.

    ON SSH PEOPLE AND LAND

It is laughable to read these misinformed writings which carry half-truths and inane pseudo-political arguments. It am really aghasted that the authors of these habitual diatribe which we often read from SOMALILANDNET.com will have us believe their hazy dream. It like a dreamer waking up in the middle of his dream knowing that the pleasure which he was indulging was too delicious to leave as such and consciously decided that it real; the hediously ghastly man was engaging rituals with a respected princess and why would he want to believe it that it was a dream. That is exactly what these people are doing.

I am from Ceergaabo, Sanaag; my brethren reside there to read that these people have the audacity to say that Sanaag (for the record 92 percent of it populated by SSH people) is intricate part of former British Somaliland; this is ludicrous to say the least.

I have no problem if the people of Waqooyi Galbeed and Togdheer want to break away from Somali on whatever grounds. That is entirely up to them—though sometimes I am inclined to believe that marriage that take place between parties should be transparent if one decided that they no longer in love with the other part then mutual agreement should be reached without the disconcerted part committing themselves to others.

I think this is very complex issue; and the whole thing comes down to tribal problems. The Isssaq want to break away from Somalia because they know they will be small fish in a big wide sea; If that is their desire let them be.

Hey, sorry my Boss just came in! I shall go back to work.

I shall leave you with this final Note

SELF-DETERMINATION IS THE CORNER STONE FOR SURVICAL OF FEEBLE POLITICAL ENTETITIES;; CONSEQUENTLY, SSH DO NOT NEED THAT OPTION; THEY ARE PART OF PUNTLAND BY CHOICE AND THE CLAIM OF THE DOCILE POLITICAL FIGURES IN HARGIESA CAN NOT LITLLE TO CHANGE; JUST LIKE WE PEOPLE OF SSH CAN NOT MAKE TOGDHEER PART OF PUNTLAND---- ACTUALLY THE LATTER CHOICE IS QUITE ATTRACTIVE FOR THESE PEOPLE!.
