More than two-thirds of Muslims in Britain are of South Asian ancestry, leading many to believe that Islam is the preserve of these communities.

Yet in the last 20 years, Islam has arguably become the fastest growing religion among black people in Britain and at a time when the UK appears more disunited over faith, ethnicity and identity than ever before.

In this programme the writer and presenter, Dotun Adebayo, explores this phenomenon and asks why is Islam providing such an attractive religious alternative to Christianity for black Britons seeking spiritual answers?

What do they get from Islam that they can’t get from their original faith? Is this just a rebellion against the family and society?

He talks to young black people about the reasons for their conversion and to Bishop Joe Aldred from the Black Churches who explains where he thinks the Black Majority Churches are going wrong - and why he thinks they need to smarten up and get their message across to young people so they are comfortable with church.

Conversion to Islam also has a darker side in the shape of terrorism.

As Dotun Adebayo says: "Ever since the penny dropped that the Richard Reid, the shoebomber was THE Richard Reid I had lived with when he was a teenager in south London, I have been haunted with the question of whether I could have done anything to dissuade my petty thieving 'good lad at heart' flatmate from going down the route of militant Islam. Twenty years later I have to ask is being 'young muslim and black' still a "lovely, precious dream."

Richard Reid is just one example of extremism and the dangers of radicalization among converts. Like Reid, who was of mixed race origin, many converts are first introduced to Islam in Prison or Young Offenders Institutions.

Dotun goes to Brixton to meet young converts and Dr Abdul Haq Baker, an academic and member of Brixton Mosque, knew Richard Reid, to discuss what makes a young convert turn to extremism and how the Muslim communities are trying to combat this.

  2. A village in Pakistan devastated by flooding has been renamed Midlands after a West Midlands charity raised money to help rebuild it.

Walsall-based Midland International Aid Trust raised £113,000 to help the 20 million people thought to be affected by the monsoon floods last year.

The village of Lal Pir, now named Midlands, had been cut off by water.

Mohammed Aslam MBE, the trust's founder, has been visiting the country to oversee how the aid is spent.

Mr Aslam, 71, originally from Kashmir, said he wanted to make sure every penny of aid went to the people living in the region.

He said in August he could only reach Lal Pir by boat.

Now all 36 homes which were destroyed have been rebuilt, at a cost of £2,000 each, after the charity provided the villagers with materials and tools.

The floods struck the north of the country in August. At least 1,500 died in the deluge.

Two of Malawi's most senior judicial officials are arguing over whether a new bill includes a provision that outlaws breaking wind in public.

Justice Minister George Chaponda says the new bill would criminalise flatulence to promote "public decency".

"Just go to the toilet when you feel like farting," he told local radio.

However, he was directly contradicted by Solicitor General Anthony Kamanga, who says the reference to "fouling the air" means pollution.

"How any reasonable or sensible person can construe the provision to criminalising farting in public is beyond me," he said, adding that the prohibition contained in the new law has been in place since 1929.

The Local Courts Bill, to be introduced next week reads: "Any person who vitiates the atmosphere in any place so as to make it noxious to the public to the health of persons in general dwelling or carrying on business in the neighbourhood or passing along a public way shall be guilty of a misdemeanour."

Mr Chaponda, a trained lawyer, insists that this includes farting.

"Would you be happy to see people farting anyhow?" he asked on the popular "Straight Talk" programme on Malawi's Capital Radio.

He said that local chiefs would deal with any offenders.

When asked whether it could be enforced, he said it would be similar to laws banning urinating in public.

Chen Wei-Yi has had one of the most unusual weddings in history by marrying herself in a ceremony in Taiwan.

Chen - whose English name is Only - carried out the ceremony as a protest against the pressures on women in Taiwanese society to get married.

The move comes following the government's recent campaign to encourage marriage and parenthood to boost the island's very low birthrate.

Many Taiwanese women are delaying marriage because they want to have an education and a career.

BBC Taipei Correspondent Cindy Sui went to meet Only for Outlook as she prepared for her big day.
