higher education is very important to both men and women, especially at this time where muslims are oppressed every where, we should try to learn everything, the reason muslims are what they are now is their lack of knowledge(physics, chemisry and biology), and islam always encouraged education, education never clashes with religion, that why muslim scientists never had a problem with religious scholors, while european scientists were either executioned or locked behind bars. girls should have a degree as a back up plan, they can not depand on a husband, he can die, or leave them, or he can be abusive, then with 5 kids, what can they do? how are they going to survive? i do not know what kind of a person would advise girls not to go to college?staying home with kids and cooking and cleaning, nothing wrong with that,it is good for the family, as long as when the time comes she can go outside and raise her kids alone with dignity.

for a minute a i thought that i was reading Newsweek, or Times, it is typical article that westerener's(or wanna be) would write, before he writes anything he needs to learn the difference between saudi and islam, he can hate them if he choose to do so, but saudi's did not invent the dress code, and if 1900's somali women use to walk around half naked and now they cover up then we should thank Allah not complain, but apparently the writter has another opinion.

"It is time we have to speak out. If we don’t do it today, we won’t be able to do it tomorrow. Because there will be no tomorrow as our country descends into 7th century Arabia." in 7th century people were much more civilized than they are today. "I wrote this out of my love for my country and my people. This is my battle cry against oppression, particularly against women, in the name of religion and I would never have forgiven myself for not writing it". cajiib!!!!! everyone who wants to be famous has to talk about poor oppressed muslim women!!!,old one he needs to come up with new idea.

it happened in france, turkey sweden and now in USA,no wonder she did not make to the headlines, if this girl was in Iran or Saudi Arabia and she was suspended because she took off her scarf it would have been international crises, and maybe she would've gotten noble price.

  4. what i heard of, and i could be wrong that, the gov chose latin because majority of the world use it so it was easy to get funding, i do not think that we lost anything, because arab governments do not care anyone who is not arab anyway, second it makes sense if all muslims use arabic letters, because arabic is the language of our religion, not because we want to have better relation with arabs, we should care whether we have good relations with all muslims not only arabs.

  5. salaam

the problem i see in this award is the double standing, in USA how many people are in jail, how many muslims are thrown into prisons in europe, America, with out charges if the westerners are so much concerned about muslim rights why do not they talk about it? or when shari'ah is implemented in certain coutries they become threat to the "civilized" world.muslim countries' justice is not worse than western.. she is third muslim who were the other two arafat they gave him when he gave up 78% of his land, and sadat when he stopped the war and recognized isreal what does it tell you, in my opinion they gave the award when you follow them.

  6. salaam

i do not trust the western people when they give their awards to the muslims, what is the problem in iran that required woman to be liberated? is not it, because they forced women to wear hijab, then how come we do not see the same award being given to the turkish women who are denied the right to wear hijab who continously are demonstrating and writting? how come iran is considered and saudi arabia for that matter to be oppresing countries because they force their women to cover up but france is considered to be democratic and free because they force muslim girls to uncover. i do not agree everything that saudi arabia or iran are doing. the only reason that they gave the award to her is that she is selling their ideas. they(western) are always talking about how saudi or iran are forcing women to wear hijab, but they never talk about france and Turkey, so give me a break they do not care about muslim women, the only thing they care is their ideas and moral to be spread, if women see something wrong with the rulers and i'm sure there are plenty of them they should not go to the western to fix for them peroid, they should try to fix it with the quran and Sunnah, it is not easy but it is doable.

  7. sister read my edited post i added more, you can not understand the qur'an without the sunnah, otherwise tell me how do you know how that duhur is 4 and fajr prayer is two? the qur'an commands us to pray but it does not teach us how, we get that from the sunnah and since we did not see the prophet actually praying we learned it from the sunnah through his campanions, i used the prayer as an example that the qur'an and the sunnah can not be seperated. and i never said qur'an is incomplete.

  8. salaam

first of all In Islam, we are not supposed to say anything based on our opinions on anything, without knowledge. Everything we say regarding the religion should be be backed up with the quran and the Sunnah in the understanding of the companions. so opionated, ask your self when did the later interpretion came up? which of campanions interprated like that? is any hadith where the prophet(PPUH) said woman can show their hair? then make up your mind. here is some hadiths about hijab i got from http://www.geocities.com/WestHollywood/Park/6443/Hijab/Hijab.html Narrated Umm Salamah, Ummul Mu'minin: When the verse "That they should cast their outer garments over their persons" was revealed, the women of Ansar came out as if they had crows over their heads. Sunan Abu Dawud: Book 32, Number 4090.

Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: Safiyyah, daughter of Shaybah, said that Aisha mentioned the women of Ansar, praised them and said good words about them. She then said: When Surat an-Nur came down, they took the curtains, tore them and made head covers (veils) of them. Sunan Abu Dawud: Book 32, Number 4089.

and:Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) brought Fatimah a slave which he donated to her. Fatimah wore a garment which, when she covered her head, did not reach her feet, and when she covered her feet by it, that garment did not reach her head. When the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) saw her struggle, he said: There is no harm to you: Here is only your father and slave. Sunan Abu Dawud: Book 32, Number 4094.

he Prophet said, "The worst among women are those who freely leave their homes without hijab. They are hypocrites and few of those will enter paradise." (Sunan Baihaqi)

    from: http://www.islam1.org/khutub/Hijab.htm

by Imam Abu Dawud on the authority of Ae'ishah (R.A.) that said, "Asma', the daughter of ABu Bakr, came to the prophet (S.A.W.) wearing thin clothes. When the prophet (S.A.W.) saw that, he looked away and said, "Oh Asma’, if a woman reaches puberty, she should not show anything from her except this and he pointed to his face and his hand." finally if the verses of the quran did not convince who ever doubts the compulsory, the hadith did not convince you either then i do not have nothing more to say about this subject

rudy i do not know why you keep asking the same question, even after so many people gave you the verse and here it is, and i hope people will not try to twist its meaning : Allah Ta'ala says: "And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts from sin and not show of their adornment except only that which is apparent, and draw their headcovers over their necks and bosoms and not reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women (i.e., their sisters in Islam), or their female slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants free of physical desires, or small children who have no sense of women's nakedness. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And turn unto Allah altogether, O you Believers, in order that you may attain success.[An-Nur, 24:31]

Prophet, Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their outer garments about themselves (when they go out). That is better so that they may be recognised and not molested. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. [Al-Ahzaab, 33:59]

well to whoever wrote this article, isn't is amazing that after 1400 years later people find out that hijab is not compulsory, that means the prophet(PPUH), sahaba(may Allah be pleased with them) and all the learned scholars understood the religion wrong and people who are living 21st century know better than them, it is very weak argument to say that hijab is not fard, cause saying that you are denying and rejecting verses of the quran. islam never told women to stay home, yes they took part of the wars, they were very active in the society, if muslim women are denied for these things then the blame lies within the society, not the religion, islam gave women their respect when it made hijab to be compulsory.and i see its benefit right now while i'm living here in the USA, while my coworkers do not flirt with me, they do not touch me as they do with other girls, because they know i'm muslim, how they know i'm muslim because of the HIJAB.and i wonder while you quoted the verse that gives elder women permission to take off the hijab, how come you did not see the beginning of verse where women are ordered to wear hijab?!!, and i do not know where muslim men respect non-muslim woman more than veiled muslim woman, and if they exist, they are the ones who believe hijab is oppressing.

  11. salaam

i think that we need to be more careful when telling a joke, saying God say that and that when he did not it is like making up things.or telling a lie about God. that is my opinion.

  12. ok, hold on, i think nothing wrong with giving them the quraan, how non-muslims are supposed to convert if they are not allowed to see or read the quraan, i'm not talking about powel, but average non-muslim person, it reminds me how back in somlia we use to say that non-muslims can not enter a masjid, and later on we find out that it is ok.

    I

is not that what the western believe that all muslim men are arrogant and violent, they are asking similar question how can muslim women be happy, however instead of muslim men you said arabs, how can you generalize all arabs, every one has a right to marry who ever they like, the only people who will complain are those who have low self esteem and inferiority complex.

hold on there, do you know how many iraqis died, or die daily, there are 10,000+ iraqis killed, since the war began, average of 20 deaths per day, what on earth are you talking about?!!,why would they give a shit about one foriegner, while there own people are dying and no one is paying attention. beside they did not mean to kill him, these people are fighting with americans, and they see NBC as american media, they bombed them and unfortunately he was there, it was his time to go, he died it is sad but he is not different than others who are dying there on a daily basis. i wonder why do not you say something somalis that are killed in kenya, ethipia ans south africa?

  16. salaam some of you are defending arabs and putting down somali people, as somali person i do not consider myself and those i know as arabs this goes to whoever say that somalis think they are arabs. i do not think that arabs have a time to hate somalis.they have enough problems.if you say you are better than someone then you are going against what the prophet(PPUH)said,"neither arabs are better than non arabs, neither balcks are better than whites, nor whites are better than blacks, except their taqwa" so to those of you who putting somalis down just tell the guy he is wrong, because you are just doing what he is doing,or it is ok to put us(somali) down and a crime if the samething is done to others.

  17. but grew up with my mom's family where if a guy nocks the door u ask who they lookin for before u open the door, and after tellin u who they lookin for u get that person or say that person isn't home without seein ur face. and i have been like dat even since 9 yrs old.. so i can't just change like dat. and my dad thinks sometimes we are rude to his ppl lol.

    [/QB]

as a somali i think it is rude too, if someone comes to my home looking for my brothers or father, as a somali i required to open the door, let them have a seat, give them tea if it is evening etc, ask them about their health and then they leave after 5-10 minutes, that is proper way to welcome your guests in somali culture, and if they are your father's relatives they did not come to see only your father but the kids too, so i would advise you to sit down with them for a while and then excuse yourself and do whatever you want to do. i understand there is a huge difference between arab culture and somali culture especially about women, most somali men have no problem if their daughters or wives sit with their friends while arabs will prefer if their wives had no contact with male friends.in my opinion our culture is easy and simple, i mean again in my opinion it is much simpler and better in many ways than middle eastern one.

  18. i agree with magnoona, i can honestly say that i do feel more sorry for palestinian than my own people, for simple reason that we are killing each other for qabiil and ****** things like that while palestinians are killed just because they are muslim, each day they are dying just to safe al_aqsa the third holliest mosque, so tell me what we somalis are doing for muslims or for us, are not we muslims suppose to be like a body, or like a building, that we should feel each other's pain. yeah i was mad and my blood boils every time i see one palestinian killed or injured.

  19. salaam

rudy it seems to me brother that like many people you connect arabs and islam as they are one,i do not understand what shari'a has to do with whatever saudis did.and all arabs are not the same, there were countries who let somalis to enter their countries without visa, and if some of them mistreat us they mistreat other arabs as well. and those black brothers you are talking about kenya, ethiopia i just wish you were there to see how they humiliate us, and about arabs not lifting a finger again if you were in somlia at the time of war and hunger, you would have seen that how much food arabs brought and they were distributing at camps while westerners were giving us bad oil that you would not have used if you can get something better, or the wheat that i found out after i come to usa that they only give it to their horses.arabs were bringing what they eat good rice, oil, milk. it is difficult to see the difference unless you've been there and saw it.regardless what arabs are islam is a religion for all colors, and times, i'm not a scholar by any means but i'm sure that there is no major difference between the 4 imams about the shar'a. and the last time i checked there was no sect that is called wahabi? so what do you exactly mean wahabism?!!

  20. salaam

haaruun is not looking down, but the man is father he is responsible for everything that needs money, man can marry less educated woman as long as she can take care of her household. but let's say the woman is the one who provides for the family, because he is not educated hence he can not afford to rent house in a safe neighborhood, he can not afford to send his children to nice islamic school, so here he needs her money but who is going to pay bills when she is pregnant and can not work, who is going to pay bills if she decides to stay home and take care for her family, as we live in a society that are are against our religion, isn't that her first responsibilty. so in my opinion it is not looking down but thinking about tomorrow when she will not be able to work. so i think she should forget about him they are totally two different people.

  21. salaam

i agree with latif, nothing wrong with asking some one's qabiil in the eyes of many people, people misused the qabiil to hate and feel that they are better than other qabiil that's where the problem is but not the qabiil itself, we may never know why he asked her, i think she should asked him why instead of getting mad. and Allah created us this way so we know each other and this is the verse :[13] O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full Knowledge and is well-acquainted (with all things). in my opinion if some one ask me about my qabiil i would not label him as qabiilist cause there are other reason people ask about one's tribe.even at the time of the prophet people are recognized according to their clans, if it was something bad he would have banned it i guess.so may be we should be honest as long as there is somali there will be tribe and clan, but we can work towards the day when we will be able to live together without hating each other.

  22. salaam

may be some of you read last week's newsweek article that they called "challenging the qur'an" the funny part is that the so called professor who challenges the qur'an does not speak arabic, and claims that arabic was not written until 100+ years, anyway you can read the whole article here, the reply and then you might want to sign the petition for newsweek to publish the reply even though i doubt they will http://www.islamonline.net/english/Contemporary/2003/08/Article02.shtml

  23. salaam

i think both, men and women , mothers let their daughters go through FGM even though they were well aware its pain because simply in old somali culture men would not marry woman who are not circumcised(FGM way), so in my opinion large portion of the blame lies on men, women did it because that was what men wanted.
