Somalia’s Islamic Courts plan to form fresh Islamic Courts in Puntland
Mogadishu 18, Oct.06 ( Sh.M.Network) Shabelle Radio in Mogadishu has interviewed religious leaders from the semiautonomous region of Puntland, who have been staying in Mogadishu lately, over their arrival.
Sheik Abdulkani Qorane, who has been leading the religious team, confirmed to Shabelle that they had arrived in Mogadishu to meet with the Union of Islamic Courts, conferring about the way the Islamic courts would reach and form an Islamic Court in Puntland in northeast Somalia.
The autonomous region of Puntland that is about 1,500 km southeast of the capital Mogadishu, is considered as Somalia’s main commercial province.

Mogadishu 17, Oct.06 ( Sh.M.Network) Anti- Ethiopia demonstration has taken place in Bur Hakaba about 180 km southwest of the capital Mogadishu.
Several hundreds of Bur Hakaba demonstrators were chanting anti-Ethiopia slogans.
Residents in Bur Hakaba were furious about the recent arrival of Ethiopian and the Somali government forces in their district.
The organizers who spoke at the demonstration indicated they opposed Prime Minister Gedi who fired the minister for women and family affairs Fowzia Mohammed Sheik who hails from Bur Hakaba.
Sheik Osman, one of the organizers, has told Shabelle Radio in Mogadishu they objected to Ethiopian forces in Baidoa, accusing the federal government of receiving the Ethiopians in Somalia.“We are also showing our sadness over stripping Fowzia, minister for women and family relations, from her post in the governmentâ€, Osman said.

20 Somali army vehicles seized
Kismayu - Troops loyal to powerful Somali Islamists have seized trucks mounted with machine guns and anti-aircraft rockets from rival militia they fought at the weekend, said an Islamist official on Tuesday.
Sunday night's clashes in Jibil, a farming town about 110km north of Kismayu port, killed four and stoked fears of mounting violence in the Horn of Africa nation.
"We have taken over 20 vehicles, including three big trucks mounted with anti-aircraft missiles," said Dahir Ahmed, a local Islamist official.
"This was necessary in order to improve security."

Somaliland president pardons 600 prisoners

HARGEISA (Reuters) - President Dahir Rayale Kahin of Somalia’s self-declared breakaway republic of Somaliland has pardoned 600 prisoners to coincide with the end of Ramadan, the prosecutor-general said on Tuesday.
Detainees to be freed include 44 women and 12 men jailed for protesting last month against the alleged torture of Sheikh Mohamed Sheikh Ismail, arrested last year on suspicion of being involved in terrorist activities.
"All those who were sentenced for 6 months or 3 months for taking part in the demonstration...will be released," Somaliland prosecutor-general Hussein Dhere told reporters.
But prisoners serving jail terms for terrorism, murder and rape would not be released, he added.
The end of the Muslim fasting month is due to be celebrated in Somaliland on Sunday or next Monday.
It was not immediately clear how many prisoners are serving time in the northern enclave which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 when warlords ousted dictator Mohamed Siad Barre, plunging the country into chaos.
Local media said last month’s protest in Somaliland’s capital Hargeisa was sparked after several websites published pictures purported to show the torture of Ismail by interrogators.

Gunfire exchange kills two in Jilib, southern Somalia

Mogadishu 16, Oct.06 ( Sh.M.Network) Two persons were dead and two others were injured after the Islamic Courts forces and a local gunman have exchanged fire in Jilib district, 380 km south of the capital Mogadishu.
The fight came after a gunman onboard a minibus, which was traveling to a nearby village, was intercepted by Courts forces and the man opened fire, killing one Islamist.
The forces returned fire, killing the gunman and wounding two of the passengers.
Shabelle reporter in Jilib Farhan said the gunman was a fugitive, escaping from arrest after he had murdered a local man Ali Jiliow and he was member of militias who mugged people in the area.The Islamic Courts in Kismayu, some 500 km south of the capital, had raided 3 houses that belonged to Col. Ahmed Shire who had battlewagons in his house in Kismayu.
Col. Shire was member of the defeated Jubba Valley Alliance that was once in control of the port city of Kismayu.

The last time a Somali athlete made a big noise on the world athletics stage it was to signal the end of Britain's golden era in the middle-distances. With that in mind, there is a delicious irony in the prospect that, almost two decades on and with British athletics fast becoming the laughing-stock, another 'Somali' is on the threshold of sparking a British middle-distance revival.
Mo Farah was born in Mogadishu, came to Britain at the age of nine without a word of English, but now speaks with an accent that is very south London. In keeping with his new identity his running inspiration is also one of Britain's finest, Paula Radcliffe, though another name frequently crops up when he mixes with those who share the family ties. "If you ask anyone of Somali background they talk about Abdi Bile," Farah says. "I would like to meet him one day."
At Rome in 1987 it was Bile who took advantage of an off-colour Steve Cram to deprive the Briton of a second straight world 1500 m title. It was also the last time a British man went into a major championship over a distance longer than 800 metres as the favourite.
In Gothenburg, and with Britain's athletes facing their worst European Championships for 40 years, the men's 5000 metres offers a ray of hope. Farah is a changed character, poised to step out of the shadows of Britain's 21st century middle-distance mediocrity

Abdi Abdirahman
Born in Somalia, Abdirahman (whose full first name is Abdihakim) moved with his family to Arizona when he was 13. He didn’t take up running until five years later, when he began classes at Pima Community College. As he explained to the Arizona Daily Wildcat, “I had this friend who told me that I look like a runner, so I went to practice with the team. The first time I ran with the team, I was in jeans and a T-shirt and I beat everybody.†During his career at Pima, Abdirahman was a two-time state junior college champion, and it wasn’t long before Wildcats head coach David Murray noticed Abdirahman’s skills and encouraged him to transfer to the University of Arizona.
Career Highlights: Two-time USA 10,000m Champion (‘01, ‘05); two-time USA 10,000m runner-up; 2005 USA 10-mile champion
Abdirahman’s 2005 season was highlighted by winning his second career U.S. men’s 10,000m title and qualifying for his second world outdoor championships team. He also established a new marathon personal best (2:11:24) with his fifth-place finish at the 2005 ING New York City Marathon. Mohamed Said
A basketball talent
In the All Star game, he had 18 points 8 rebound, 5 assists 3 steals to earn the all star M.V.P. award. He also won the African all-star 3 points contest. In May 2004, he took part in the African basketball championships game and was the second leading scorer on the team with 12 points, 9 rebound, 3 assists 2 steals.
It is worthwhile to note that Mohamed Said had started playing basketball very early and even in high school had impressive results leading his team in every category, points, assists, rebounds and steals.
Salah Abdo
Salah who was born in Somali is a seventeen years old phenomena who currently plays for St. Marks Preparatory School outside of Boston, USA.
Salah took up the game of basketball six years ago and has ever since excelled in playing the game. In this short period of time Salah was invited to “Big Tim†tournament in Las Vegas for the last two years, three times to New Jersey’s Reebok invitation, AAU nationals in Florida and Washington DC summer invitation.
Only at seventeen years of age Salah is seen as a role model for the young Somalis in the greater Boston area. Salah is not only an exceptional basketball player but he is also a great student who believes that education is the key to success. When asked about obstacles that he had to over come in playing basketball he responds “people doubt me because of where I come from, but I let my actions speak for meâ€. Also about being consider the best Somali basketball player at his age Salah responds “I am just trying to put Somali on the map and it will happen soonâ€.
