Very well put.
2006 was a turning point indeed. It was as significant as 1991, a year which changed everything we knew thusfar.
Post-2006:
- Warlord era is gone: at least the known warlords who behaved in the known ways.
There is a chance of religious warlodism to arise though, so we should be really carefull for this.
- Ethiopian direct involvement is gone: at least they do not dare to come at the centre of Somali politics and economy: Mogadishu, and have resorted back to their old tactics of arming Somali factions and operating from the border-region.
- Most importantly, Mogadishu society has changed dramatically.
The people of Mogadishu have seen many things that are possible and not only limited to daydreams:
- Defeat of the infamous Mogadishu warlords: SInce 1991 the people of Mogadishu fantasized about a society free of warlordism and criminals roaming the streets. They could not imagine the defeat of the warlords and the restoration of peace and stability, and all changed in 2006!
Warlords were defeated utterly and chased out of the city, 6 months of GLORIOUS PEACE AND STABILITY.
Again, in 2009 after 2-3 years of bloody Ethiopian occupation and the displacement of 1 million people, and the massacre of 17.000 persons, Mogadishu society witnessed again another miracle: The defeat of this bloody occupation and the resilience of Mogadishu society.
Mass demonstration in which the people of Mogadishu propagated for PEACE AND STABILITY.
Now, Mogadishu society is never as united as it is today. They are united in a COMMON DEEP HUNGER FOR PEACE AND STABILITY.
They do not care for the dirty game of politics and different factions fighting in the city: they want all one thing: PEACE AND STABILITY, and today they are ready to die for those ideals. Mogadishu society is united in fighting ruthlessly against any faction that denies the city and its people those two things: PEACE AND STABILITY. Hence why Alshabaab has heeded the signs on the wall, and changed tactics from fighting with no regard for the people to doing community works.
Mogadishu society has indeed come stronger out of the brutal nightmare of 2004-2009.
Despite the wishes and forecasts of outsiders, Mogadishu society came stronger and not weaker out of the countless conflicts since 2004.
Unity of Purpose: PEACE AND STABILITY. Mogadishu citizens all want those 2 things.
PEACE AND STABILITY 2 Mogadishu= the foundation for a strong SOMALIA.

Instead of taking on the big enemy which is in Baay/Bakool Alshabaab goes for the cowardly tactic of launching an assault of a FEW minutes and then hiding in the hope the AMISOM troops would responds fiercly on the civilians of Mogadishu.

Adeer, Let them daydream. Not long ago they were dreaming of ''Mogadishu been Tamed'' ''A.Yusuf been the best president'', And anno 2009 A.Yusuf is in Garowe insignificant, Ethiopians have been defeated and left Mogadishu.
Their house is shaking, it has become one clan show, and they want to disguise that by grandeur dreams.

Mogadishu was , relatively speaking, prior to the Ethiopian invasion and occupation the most diverse Somali city, like it always used to be.
Ofcourse we are talking about post-1991, still in that context Mogadishu hosted a large share of the ones where this topic is about. Mainly from Gedo and Jubboyinka, and other Northern businessmen from Northern Somalia.
So Mogadishu is open to all Somalis, and no one who is a Somali will be called by us ''diaspora''.

Ispector give another five to eight years, if Mogadishu doesn't get its acts together and take its leading role then I think Puntland should flip the coin and declare Garowe the capital of the republic and invite all Somalis from as far as Kamboni, Baidoa, Hargeisa to Ras-asayr, I guess Puntland will have enough time to build its economical capability and infrastructure to get to that stage Insha'alah.LOOL
You do not even have full control over the territory you claim, and your region is plagued by piracy, corruption,and clannism, yet you have dreams of making Garowe the capital of Somalia? Puntland region is now just one-clan show, and it became clear to see for all when the core clan of Puntland closed its eyes when its western regions, where they do not live, were taken over by another entity, and more so by the selection of the third sub-group to power just to solify internal unity and solidarity within the core clan of the puntland admin.
If you cannot even keep your own house in order and are driven by clan politics (in this case of the core clan) how can you dream about inviting the whole of Somalis to your house? Especially the largest Somali group which shows nothing but animosity and mistrust towards you, especially after the Ethiopian occupation which many in that region cheered for?
Again, wishfull thinking. But everyone has the right to day dream adeer, so dont mind me.

Can you back those claims with tangible sources/evidence or is it just the same old myth?
Because, ALshabaab although highly effective was just small in numbers, while the resistance was composed of other factions, notably ICU and other non-Islamist factions.

Somalia since 1991 has been divided along clan boundaries. Mogadishu city is just one of the cities which resemble the divisions. Burao, Hargeisa, Bosaso, Garowe and other notable cities in Somalia are been settled along clan boundaries with most in certain neighbourhoods.
Even before 1991, there were certain neighbourhoods in Mogadishu which were mostly settled by particular groups.
Also, isn't Puntland a clan entity? Ever since the SOOl-Sanaag people have become disillusioned it has become a one-clan show.
Now, you may hate on Mogadishu people which becomes visible in your words of ''looting and isbaaro'', but the fact is Mogadishu people found a way to coexist. Now the warlord era is gone, Union of Islamic Courts will build on the natural equilibrium of power balance in the city, and slowly but steadily improve the lives of the inhabitants. Only when the immediate problems facing the inhabitants of Mogadishu, who have withstood 2 years of brutal Ethiopian occupation and 17 years of warlordism, are solved, can we talk about ideals of Mogadishu city returning to its pre-1991 or making it better then that era!

First of all, Qeybdiid along with other warlords should be trialed.
Secondly,
What happened in Mogadishu is just the complete takeover of the city by the Union of Islamic Courts. If you remember well, the Union of Islamic Courts evolved through cooperation of different Islamic courts that operated in the different sections of the city.
Now the Ethiopian occupation is defeated, it is logical for the Islamic courts to assume control of the city in which the different Islamic courts all take their pre-2006/7 locations.
What is negative about this development?
Mogadishu is inhabited by a couple of powerfull groups that are sometimes diametrically opposed to each other, and have been engageed in fierce competition over power and resources. Ever since 1991, the groups witnessed constant warfare which eventually brought about a natural eqilibrium in which every group lived in its own section, and found a way to coexist next to each other without kicking any group out of the city or without one group gaining hegemony. This eventually led to the emergence of organisations which could rise above the clan interests and unite for the collective interets of the inhabitants of Mogadishu city. ICU is an example of such organisations.
Kismaanyo which is smaller and less important then Mogadishu can already not be controlled by the different groups that live there, and one group has to have dominance over the others. Mogadishu on the contrary achieved to bring about natural equilibrium, which can function as a fertile environment for organisations that have the intention to rise above clan boundaries, to arise.
