“If the government was worried about these health issues, they should have checked before we came,” says Li Fai La, the factory manager . Rather than remove or recycle effluent, he said the
company dumps industrial waste “in water 3km away from the factory.
” Although he did not specifiy what percentage of waste is dumped, the Guardian understands the factory has
no waste management system in place.

Li believes the complaints are economically driven, and says that
he has considered moving Jeronimo to neighbouring Ethiopia
. “You can go to the factory now,” he says. “Yes, the smell is bad but trees are growing and there are fish in the water nearby.

Good Lord, the nerve of some of these foreign companies.... dadkaas oo kale in ay dhulkaba ku soo degaan ayaaba khalad ah .. I hope the sland adminstration have proper environmental regulations that these companies must follow inorder to operate there.

    Where are the environmental organizations?

  2. ^^Lol at I start talking like arnold shwardzenegger, acudu billah...

A close relative once went away with a man in hawd (for marriage) and one their way to his family he said he would get her some food or something. She went away to nearby bushes and thats when she saw somehing resembling a mixture of a bahal and a human being calling out her name. She survived it laakinse the next time she agreed to marry a man, he came to her father first instead lol. I wonder if they still exist.

Go and stay with a family friend/relative or something and have them take you to the miyi.

^^This. They don't even need to come with you, they can just speak to them and it'll suffice.

I'm sure you will benefit from your trip regardless where you go. Reer miyigu weligoodba dad qoladooda aheen way arki jireen, martidana regadless their tribe way wanaajiyaan. One of the things i love about them is that- their generousity & hospitality. Waxaaba surtoowda in marka lagu haybsado in lagu garto ama meel un in aad iska soo gashaan intermarriages or acquaintances .I came across a geeljire from mudug in ceelasha dhoqoshay in togdheer region. That's what i love about the place, you would see people from far away places. Unless there is a intense conflict (qof laga dilay, iyo mag aan la bixin) going on with people from your tribe/subclan, you should be fine wether its wayooyi or koonfur.

Let us know how it turns out and do write about your experience.:)

Arabs do it better than Somali, if you take a photo at a Arab wedding waa lagugu soo duulayaa. I don't think Somalis are as bothered tbh. Last Somali/ Yemeni wedding I went to the DJ was behind a screen laakin mar walba intuu soo baxo ayuu Islamaha la hadlaayay.
    :D

Lol... Anigaa iyo dhoowr hablo ayaa nalugu soo duulay at a somali wadaad aroos after taking pictures of our selves recently. I've seen similar reactions of people that did that too in other somali weddings too, I guess waa iska nasiib.

  5. Aliyah: Wearing them will definetely depend on the context, as blessed explained with the all women parties. But i agree some of them can be worn with a hijaab and a jacket if it's a mixed party/wedding.

I dont like it, the dresses are too long, i am surprised none of the models tripped and they have no shape/too baggy

I noticed their length aswell I think they have been inspired by the length of cabaayah, I was told back in the emirates that it's a trend that they are long and can touch the floor.

Serenity and chubacka: I think also that it would look even more nice if they werent so wide, but I guess It's a matter of dookh.:)

I've noticed that its popular that dresses are a bit wide there, maybe it's something with the trends there in carabta? I dont know.

MashaAllah! Laakin nothing I would wear not a dirac girl, I have a soft spot of guntiino.
    :)

Guntiinada is very nice. If i had to choose I would definetely go for that and saddex qeyska, subeeciyada and the whole package.

  7. I have been looking for the songs "wa mahad Alleh" and Calanka" for years. Thanks a lot saffers :) I thought I'd never find these historical songs again. The Norwegian state television once filmed somalis in 1990 in Norway, wearing traditional somali clothes while singing these two songs playing the kaban and drums. Saw it much later when i got older as my family had the tape and it was deep to see them standing there singing these profound songs while they were living in time of uncertainty and the country was in ruins. I can't imagine how it must have felt hearing those songs during our peoples new found independence.

  8. There is no doubt that a bad environment, lack of parent involvement, and a poor education system or one that perpetuate inequalties & prejudice is a detrimental combination. Caruuro waraabeyaal la dhex dhejiyey la yaab ma leh in ay xumaadaan ama in ay waxbarashada ka dhacaan. That in it's self is demotivating. However, that's where parents comes in. As mentioned earlier, many parents needs to be more engaged and aware of their kids learning situation.

  9. The relationship

    To which we are wedded

    Is a beautiful tyranny

    Misnamed partnership

    .

Our partnership Is a partnership of unequal partners

    Of unequal powers and unequal

    opportunities

    A partnership honeycombed

With labyrinths of genteel deception, division and exclusion.

    In our partnership

    One party represents

An imperial order of unprecedented sway

    and intrigue

    Into whose hegemonic bosom

    The other is conveniently entombed.

    In our partnership

One party is the source, centre and

    symbol

Of all knowledge, civilisation and salvation

The other a mere consumer of

    high culture and quips

We are stakeholders in a bizarre covenant

    That folds enslavement

    In intoxicating benevolence and grace

Our partnership is afflicted with saintly inhumanity.

In the cold mathematics of our

    partnership

    Our partnership is our destiny.

  10. Looks lovely! Nothing beats going out to have some time for your self and enjoying the feeling of tranquility when watching nature. It took me ages to actually notice its beauty and it's really a shame how even the simpliest of things gets unnoticed.

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (Radhi Allahu Ta'ala Anhu), who said that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallahu alayhi wa Sallam) said:

Allah (mighty and sublime be He) said: Whosoever shows enmity to someone devoted to Me, I shall be at war with him. My servant draws not near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him. When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him, and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him it. I do not hesitate about anything as much as I hesitate about [seizing] the soul of My faithful servant: he hates death and I hate hurting him. (al-Bukhari).

The year is 1989, and East Berlin is celebrating 40 years of socialist rule by the German Democratic Republic. However, these are tumultuous times, and East Germany is on the brink of dramatic political and cultural change. Christiane Kerner is a dedicated socialist activist helping to improve the lives of those around her. But after seeing her son Alex getting arrested in a protest rally she suffers a heart attack and falls into a coma. Months pass, all the while the Germany she once knew is being transformed from the relentless triumph of capitalism after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany. Knowing that the slightest shock could prove fatal when his mothers awakens, Alex strives to keep the fall of the GDR a secret for as long as possible from his bed-ridden mother. We follow Alex through his often comical yet sincere attempts to keep a pre-Wall façade; but when his game takes on a life of its own, long buried family secrets surface as East Germans around them experience freedoms for the first time.

A great movie about collective memory in society, sense of place (and loss of it) and individuals will and power to construct competing memories. The last part was very moving especially when he said "the GDR i created for her was the GDR I wanted " and "that it was a country that did not exist". His efforts to construct a reality he could only long for was truly commendable. Highly recommended movie.
