Somaliland:Berbera Residents Demonstrate Against Government Decision to Award Fishing Facility to Its Cronies

By Goth Mohamed Goth

Residents of the port city of Berbera have today came out in their thousands today to protest the awarding of the

public owned NAG Fish cooling facilities to the family of a prominent businessman who has close links to the ruling elite.

The local administration is said to have since last night worked tireless in a bid to block the today’s demonstrations

but their efforts proved futile when thousands of resident turned up in support of the local fishermen who use the

cooling facilities.

Reliable told Tensions were still running high at the time of our reporting with dozens of residents arrested for taking

part in the demonstration today amid the heavy police presence.

One resident told us that the current government has a tendency of awarding its cronies with public owned property

and that is unacceptable.

nothing is save from the greed of the government cronies. In Hargeisa airport , the Aviation minister is contracting out the airport taxi business to a wealth group to pick and drop people from the airport. I do not understand why any one would like to deprive these small cab drivers to their daily living. If there is complain about their service, improve it but do not terminate them. that is there is a demonstration going on in the airport as we speak.
