Dr. Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed Might Be The Next Prime Minister [Confirmed]

(Reuters) - An economist based at the Islamic Development Bank in Saudi Arabia is favourite to be named Somalia's new prime minister, sources in the presidential palace said, after his predecessor was forced out by lawmakers in a vote of no confidence.

The palace sources, and another with connections to the former premier, named the front-running candidate as Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, 54, from Somalia's southern Gedo region. A Western diplomat also said Ahmed looked set to be named.

"Today, we got the news that Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed would be named as prime minister," one palace source said on Thursday.

The sources said Ahmed's appointment could come within 24 hours.

Analysts said the swift installment of a new prime minister was critical to ending weeks of political paralysis in the insurgency-hit nation as it struggles to cement a fragile recovery.

Western donors had fretted a prolonged vacuum at the head of government would disrupt efforts to rebuild state institutions and defeat al Qaeda-linked militants who control swathes of rural southern and central Somalia.

He seems to be over qualified. It is also relieving that President Hassan did not take the full 30 days to contemplate & sit on this important pick.

We welcome the new PM. We hope he understands where Somalia is today and what she needs to do to move forward. His education is reassuring.

As for the President, it is my opinion no matter how sincere sounding he may seem, unless he reconciles his views with the federal charter of the country , his success will be limited.

Its a good choice and a man is fit for the job there won't be any more bickering since the pm is aslo a member of damuljadid he is good with the arabs qataris sacuudis. He belongs to the gedo clan families if madoobe dishoners the addis ababa agreement he can take firm control over the gedo region. Since he is from baardhere he can even make sure the alshabaab loses control over that region. He is educated from the west all in all a good choice by president xassan.

Mooge

loool. if this is true, it will I I told you so. qoslaye was looking for the most HAG da**adiid he can find. all the other names you were hearing were all fake and publicity stunt to make it look like he is looking hard for change. keep doing the same thing and it is insanity.

a da**adiid incompetent president names a Qatari funded well-known da**adiid member. Da**adiid have now consolidated power. lol. how long will they keep entertaining themselves on things that will not work. this government is a failure and no matter how many of his da**adiid HAG members he brings on board, qoslaye will not succeed in his grand plan. he named this guy to see if he can divide the Jubbaland coalition a second time again after hiiraale/hurdaaye failed in the first bid.

^^Not sure new PM's association with the "new blood" thing, but Jubbaland fort is well defended --there is a strong coalition of major clans, front line countries with security imperative that keeps Hassan in check. If Hassan spends another hour to disrupt the federalism march in Jubba valley and to some extent in Bay , he will face a more serious challenge which may this time threaten his symbolic seat.

I think it is time to challenge this new blood overblown notion and its apparent conspiracy : for one Qatar and Saudi Arabia represent the opposite ends of Mid East influence. Qatar is decidedly a Turkey ally while Saudi Arabia is the vanguard of old order in the region. Secondly. Somalia is nothing more than a footnote in the bigger regional policies as far as Saudi and Qatar are concern. There are much larger and attractive toys in the field for these oil rich Sheekhs i.e. Egypt, Syria ...

Thirdly, the president is not entirely free in his decision to name the prime minister. There are forces that keep his feet closer to the fire to perform and meet financial, security and political milestones for whom he must in turn keep in the know in the process of his pick.

All of these indicate this new blood party is overblown and over exaggerated...

It doesn't matter who assumes this position, the so called leaders lack key attributes needed to run a country down on its luck, you need sincerity and competency.

His first test is the selection of the new cabinet. If he brings back more than one of the previous ministers then there is really no change and his appointment is nothing but cosmetic.
