UK plans to gift money, training to Somaliland and Pakistan to fight terror

Recommended Posts

LONDON - The British government is proposing to set aside around 4.8 million pounds ($7.7 million) to enhance counterterrorism capabilities in Pakistan and northern Somalia.

Foreign Secretary William Hague detailed the plans to donate equipment and fund training and mentoring programs in written statements to lawmakers on Tuesday.

He said the government wants to give 3.5 million pounds to support Pakistan's police and military to counter the threat of improvised explosive devices.

Separate assistance to the semiautonomous Somali region of Somaliland would amount to around 1.3 million pounds and go toward helping aviation and border authorities counter terrorist threats and toward building police capabilities.

The assistance will be approved as long as no lawmakers object before Dec. 5.

Maashaallah. Now Somaliland is being considered alongside major countries like Pakistan when the UK is deliberating its aid and foreign policy. I hope other countries follow suit.

The fact the money goes to Somaliland and not Somalia and the training's go to the Somaliland anti terrorism forces. Tells you a few things about the reality on the ground, but than again the Koonfurians do not much care about on the realities on the ground. But more on the diplomatic formal correctness Foreign nations use, psychologically it gives the koonfurians hope. So who are we to take away that hope.

On SOL, I most revel in the "Somaliland just built half a road," or "Somaliland minister just shook hands with Britain's Foreign Minister's assistant's ex-girlfriend" type of threads. We understand that there are some of you plenty cadaan sycophants who celebrate each time a white man rents a hotel in Hargeisa. But have a bit of pride mates.

But, at the end of the day, everyone knows (most certainly the Brits knows) that this is a
"semantics play"
intended to cover (or insulate) the British against any accusation of encouraging internal division within the Somali Republic, by the ever enfeeble outfit that is based in Mogadishu, which, surprisingly passes itself off as a government of Somalia.
:D

All in all, see to it to learn the "double-language" of diplomacy and how it's especially useful in situation like this.

True. "Northern Somalia" is euphemism for Separatist enclave. It is a doublespeak as you correctly pointed out. Ahem:) Awoowe isn't what the UK government doing just that -- encouraging internal division within Somali Republic? Ain't this the same old colonial deception employed to promote some subjects to butler status whilst condemning others to harsh labor? You know the drill :)

Awoowe any power that have vested interest in that corner would break Somalis into small junks that's easier to subdue and manage. Not out of kindness but out of self interest. In all fairness they Somalis are the ones doing all the dividing. Brits on thier part are encouraging thier former colony to keep the faith.

Awoowe innagu aan isu danbeynee bal Kulmiye la tali oo waxaad tiraahdaa si wanaagsan u akhriya heshiisyada kheyraadka gobolka lagu bixinayo inta aydaan qallinka ku duugin :)

If you are happy with name, we in turn are happy with the deeds. Furthermore, the Brits, who are after all the people given out these money knows perfectly well the "real name" of those recipient of their Counter-Terrorism( CT) effort. Hence, it's as if you are really reaching to make a point that is empty of meaning.

In other words, the Brits (due to the sensibilities of the UN charter) may say we are given money to Northern Somalia, so that Hassan Sheikh and Co. will not start crying at the UN forum about the perfidious Brits "dividing-up" Somali republic, as their four-fathers have done.

These people are joking. A cruel joke at that.

I think Oodweyne's SOL picture is emblematic of how Somalilanders see themselves. KKKK

The Commonwealth of Nations is a non-political organisation of equal nations which share common history.

Eeeer I hate to spoil the party- but the money has already been spent in Somaliland! it is not new money- it is just the final authorization for the public ceremony and handover. The equipment and money have all been delivered in the last two years and are all currently in use.

There is a consideration to expand the project and appeal for more money to do this;
