Erigavo, Somalia Sep. 20, 2013 (Garowe Online) –Somaliland police forces clashed with unarmed civilians after hundreds of people in Erigavo town of Sanaag region protested on Thursday evening against the ban of Somalia's official currency by Somaliland authorities, Garowe Online reports.

According to Erigavo resident who identified himself as Mohamed Abdi Jama, Somaliland security forces fired live ammunition at peaceful protesters when angry crowds set tyres on fire and chanted anti-government slogans.

"Demonstrators marched on the city centre to protest against Somaliland government's decision on the usage of Somali shilling. Police opened fire on the people but crowds defiantly continued their march," said the resident. " A few moments later, peaceful protests suddenly turned violent after other armed protesters in support of Somaliland government opened fire on anti-government crowds".

Witnesses confirmed that at least 10 wounded people were brought at Erigavo general hospital for treatment but details about the killing were unavailable.

Two weeks ago, militiamen clashed with Somaliland forces in Erigavo town after security forces deliberately demolished kiosks and market stalls .

Somalia's official currency still remains preferred means of exchange for many traders and ordinary citizens in Sanaag region.

Thick bundles of 100 notes are usually used in business centers and markets.

Though violence has been increasing, the region remains volatile due to tribal conflicts.Somaliland and Puntland claim ownership over Sool and Sanaag regions, home to ***** communities who share kinship with Puntland clans.

Somaliland and Puntland regions have enjoyed relative stability since the 1990s, but the threat of instability has lingered over the region since Somaliland forces militarily seized control of Las Anod in October 2007.

Erigavo iska ilow it's not possible to conquer it using a keyboard you need ba))s. seeing you and your forefathers have been hiding behind one foreign power after another I think you severely lack the ba))s required to take it.

Hargeisa admin should be mindful and be sensitive to the coexistence of Erigavo residents. No Guulwadayn from Hargeisa will do anything good.

You gotta admit though, the Khatumo war in Las Anod, Buhoodle, Hudun, and Fiqifuliye could be justified but not this one. Bunch of armed lads firing bullets into business centers who have nothing to do with the currency change. We can't have that.

Nether is justified. The khatumo is not justified because based on the agreement of 1991 between the clans of somaliland Of which the las canod folk are signatures to we agreed to move on, we agreed that the union with Somalia had little benefit and we agreed to form somaliland. If this is the case why khatumo??? Unity they say no one believes this argument because technically somaliland is not seperate yet I.e international recognition and if you can't build union with somaliland or even the pirates and choose juba over hag what union can you really achieve.

In regards to erigavo issue. When you have pirates printing fake money that has led to serious inflation in places like erigavo and las canod it makes sense To go with a currency that is stable and controlled. Why swet and work for Monopoly money??

Everything is qabil with this lot. Little common sense. If afweyne could not stop anything wih Africa's largest army why continue its best to live in peace and build together.

Somaliland logic for you: we are seceding from Somalia because we were oppressed. solution do the same. Caqlixumo waye walahi

According to you. Somaliland left the union because there is no benefit in 40 years. Who is being oppressed in las canod. The city is safer, cleaner and better. The police are local, the army is local everything is local. No one is being oppressed. Do you k now what oppression is?? Go to Lascanod and then come back and tell us why oppression is long on there.

We Signed and agreement between all of us and you have not provided one valid reason why you can not honour that agreement.

Not sure why you skipped the topic at hand but here's the answer. We all know what happened in las canood and buhoodle and others places we people were killed and displaced but that is beside the point. Here we have Ceerigaabo where Life I'm in this and was used against protesters. If that's not a person I don't know what it is. Farther more with this nonsense about agreements you continue to prove my point. We sent entire country made agreements, now you want to get out of that agreement. Get here you are with some nonsense about a few people have signed agreement with us lol
