Somaliland: Recent Attacks On UN In Somalia Spur Secession Talks

The recent bombing of a UN compound in Mogadishu has increased Somaliland’s drive for independence.

Below is an article published by The Africa Report:

A senior Somaliland politician has condemned the tragic terror attack on a UN compound in Mogadishu, but says it strengthens claims for secession from Somalia.

Mohamed Omar, the breakaway state's foreign minister, says that Wednesday's bomb-and-ground-assault [19 June 2013] by Al Shabaab should prompt the international community to rethink its vision for a united Somalia, while stressing the need to be 'vigilant' of the spread of Islamism across the Horn of Africa.

The attack left at least 13 dead including four foreigners.

Wednesday's attack is the latest blow to harmony in Somalia's troubled capital, despite its government receiving recognition by the US and International Monetary Fund last year.

Some 18,000 African Union forces are stationed in Mogadishu.

But Al Shabaab, a terror group with close ties to Al Qaeda, still controls vast swathes of land around the city, enforcing its strict interpretation of Sharia on millions of Somalis.

Somaliland, whose own armed forces number some 35,000, has remained relatively peaceful since car bombs in Hargeisa and Bosaso, a port city in neighbouring Puntland, claimed 29 lives in 2008.

The breakaway state remains unrecognised despite Somalia's fragility.

"An effective Somali government is the best way to fight the disease of Al Shabaab," said Omar. "The tragic events in Mogadishu show how difficult this is."

Despite reports of skirmishes between Somaliland forces and Al Shabaab in the state's easternmost reaches, and that Al Shabaab leader Ahmed Godane hails from the capital city, Hargeisa, Omar feels that Somaliland is containing the threat of terrorism.

However, the minister claims that a united Somalia would draw Somaliland into violence such as Wednesday's.

"Thank God our youth are not turning to Al Shabaab. We are not at war. If recognition was based on security we would have recognition. However we must remain vigilant, always looking out.

"If we join Somalia, we become the target. We hope the international community will rethink its position on Somaliland in light of these tragic events."

The UN is confused, the somali government is confused I think it's next to impossible that ether the somali government or the UNsom will meet the objective of their mandate. Hassan sheick will spend the remaining few years trying to end tribal federalism. I don't really see any new initiatives talking about grass route problem solving. Another 4 wasted years no real development in building a credible army. An election will never take place in 2016. Alshabab is still there and Somalia remains an African protectorate. It's a tough job Hassan sheick has but any progress is welcomed.

In terms of SOMALILAND we need further solidification on the ground. As our cities increase in size and population as our economy continues to grow so to will the state and state coffers hense the army will continue to grow. Ethiopia has also said it will defend SOMALILAND from any threat including Somalia even though its currently an African protectorate. This has in effect removed our greatest threat the rest I.e recognition is dependent on world politics and region interests with or without recognition one thing is certain we are better out of Somalia then in.

Secession can be possible without bombs going in Mogadishu, the Foreign Minister need to be sacked, I have met him one time and buubluu qabaa or wuu iska duul-duulaa aka fudeyd man kamana fiirsado wuxuu dhaho.

Waan condemn-gareyn iyo strenghens our position are completely two different things, he should have known better.

Las'anod — Close sources tell GO that Somaliland's UCID political party chairman, Faisal Ali Warabe's son, and a woman were arrested in Las'anod on terrorism charges following an investigation, Garowe Online reports.

Somaliland's UCID political party chairman"Faisal Ali Warabe."

Government sources in Hargeisa say that the operation was assisted by foreign security forces. The sources tell GO that the two were affiliated with Al Shabaab and that the two had a connection in recent terrorist attacks in Puntland.

Chairman Warabe's son and the woman fled Hargeisa and were attempting to flee Las'anod before they were caught.

"The man arrested is my son; I and the Minister of Interior are following the arrest of the two people. I don't know where they were headed but I want a full investigation so we can find out," said Chairman Warabe who spoke to Somali media on Sunday

Godane was literally a toilet cleaner he used to drive a water tanker and swallow up human waste from people's homes. In Somalia he is the Amir of the Islamic emerate of Somal lol. Fowzia is not only a failed politician with no record of success but her other ventures like raad tv was an epic fail along with her NDP party. Yet in Somalia She is the most praised politician in Somalia. Somalia collects Somalilands human scraps our failures are your achievers lol. You have no idea lol. The world is seriously getting tired of pumping money into Somalia with no result. 22 years in you still remain a Ugandan protectorate. The only reason why the world even cares is Alshabab is a threat to the region and piracy to international trade the foreign minister hate him or love him said why should we be attached to this dead carcus it's as simple as that and he has a point because we all know the chances of Somalia being able to look after itself without help is next to impossible. The sole purpose of any state is to safeguard and defend the lives and property of its citizens. Somalia fails at step one.

buuhoodle community alone could handle it and they are no where close as they community advancing and building multiple new villages toward caynabo.

just few

This is nothing to be proud of. The Caynaba you speak of, claiming "building multiple new villages towards Caynabo" belonged to reer Buhodle. Did you know Coodanle is a stone's throw from Xadhadhanka is settle by Beesha Qurulugud? Did you know, both Coodanle and Qurulugud, along with Bali Dhig and Dhuruksi use to be reer Buhodle settlements? Today it isn't. So, don't brag about something you lost. :D
