Giving your child an English/western name

Recommended Posts

I know a family that has kids with english names, but they are all nick names.(They have official Somali names,) laakin everyone calls them by the nick names. one of them for instance goes by James, another one goes by John)

In any case, i have seen Somalis calling dark skin jareer looking like somalis as "JOHN". or those that have middle eastern features as "Arab"..so what the Hey, name him/her whatever that rocks your boat man. (xaa ka rabtaa !!!).

And the thing is we don't even live in Arab countries. Go for Joshua or Seth or whatever makes you happy.

No one is forcing you to like arabic names. So chill out.

Aaliyyah - I asked a question and expressed an opinion - you need to relax. Not sure what Axlaam has to do with the language of the Quran but whatever floats your boat.

In Gaalkacyo there was a famous man who named his children after Arab strongmen/kufaars:

Fircoon, Haamaan, and Abu Jahal.

Today some of those sons are leaving in the west with Somali names.

Axlam is an arabic name and the language of the Quran happens to be Arabic. Hence, our religion connects us to Arabs. What connects us to western names other than the fact we live among them now?..

Sida Afghanta aa kitaabta Quranka intii kala fur, close your eyes and randomly choose a page in the book. Whatever written in the first verse of that page is going to be the chosen name. Voila, just add the last name and you got yourself a name.;) Bismillah Khan, Rasulullah Bagti, Lahuruuh Masood. Waaba dhamaatay. How easy ;)

Been wondering if naming your child David, Abraham, Moses etc is prohibited in Islam. Abraham is the English version and Ibrahim the Arabic one, but the real name of the prophet was neither Abraham nor Ibrahim. Similarly naming a child Guled or Geedi is only Somali and not Islamic. Since we are not Arabs, I might as well name him Joshua (Josh). Its not different than naming a Somali child Sacuud, Jamal etc. Unless of course there's clear proof in the Quran or the traditions of the prophet (Pbuh) that prohibit English/western/biblical names. Are there?

The name of the prophet was Ibrahim, Don't talk about something you don't know about sxb,

The other Thing, It doesnt matter what you name your son, balse, wax dadka kula af garanayaan u baxso, sidaas baa wanaagsane
