Former Finance Minister Awil Supports Somaliland’s Boycott Of London Conference

Writen by Qaran News | Published: Mar 19th, 2013 at 04:19 PM

Hargeisa(Qarannews):- Former Finance minister, Hussein Haji Ali Duale “Cawil” has welcomed the decision made by President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud “Silaanyo” not to attend the London Conference on Somalia in May 2013.

Speaking to the media, Hussein Haji Ali “Cawil” stated “It is not right that the Somaliland President attends a meeting chaired by the head of the provisional government in Somalia on issues relating to the various factions in Somalia, and I am greatly surprised that the United Kingdom government expected Somaliland to attend such a meeting not as an equal but as a supplicant”.

Former Finance minister, Cawil continued “Somaliland and Somalia must meet as equals, we were equals in 1960 and we are equals in 2013. Somaliland has a democratically elected government, elected by its people, and it must protect the choice and integrity of those voters. We are two neighbouring countries, and must meet as such”.

Former minister, Cawil, concluded his remarks by stating “The United Kingdom is our great friend, and will always remains so, but in diplomatic circles perception is everything, and we in Somaliland will not allow our prestige and self-respect be undermined by those who have no idea about the history of the defunct “Somali Republic”, and it is correct that the President stated that Somaliland will not attend a meeting specifically intended just for Somalia”.

There seems to be a growing concensus among the political elite in Somaliland on this position re:the upcoming London Conference. It will be interesting to see how this plays out vis-a-vis the larger IC/Western agenda.

Note: the Wadani party was one of the first to question attending this Conference.

^^Actually, there is a still room for doubt about Hargeysa administration's pronouncement. Hargeysa is in a quandary , and no decision is easy for them these days. This quandary has been in the making for the last twenty years ,but the political elites and the region's intellectuals never questioned the wisdom of insisting on being a country when none is recognized. Even worse, this position risks political isolation, unless there is a rather expedited schedule for the talks with Federal government. So I still think Siilaanyo may still end up showing up in London after few visible visits from Western embassies....

^^Ok. Help me understand how do you square such a hardline stance with the developmental funds pledged by various countries Turkey included in the spirit of (if not predicated) Somaliland integration with Somalia. I mean such a bold, line-in-the-sand drawing could only be possible from a sovereign nation.

The support Somaliland gets is along the lines of stability and security in the greater Somali peninsula. In light of current strategy of putting Somalia together, I really doubt Hargeysa's late in the game objection will go far with the powers that be ...

^^Understood. The three mothers have regrouped as the odds are against them this time. xiinfaniin has to yield to Oodweyne on the matters regarding the three Mother politics in the North.

Oodka,

I'm glad our boys in Hargeisa saw the light(albeit late, but better late than never). It would be political suicide to attend the London shir as it now stands(meaning the agenda of the shir, with cohosting by the SFG). We would be in the same weakened position as the 'pirates' nipping at the corners.

Interestingly, the same Prof. Weinstein that the Garowe boys use to parade certain political perceptions recently penned another piece dissecting the extremely weakened state the 'pirates' are in, given the 'diplomatic' cards given to Hassan Sheikh by the international community. Needless to say, that opinion piece did not make it on to 'GaroweOnline.com' ;)

Bye Bye Somalia"The meeting is focused on Somalia and Somaliland has nothing to do with it nor anything to contribute towards internal affairs of its neighbours" President Silanyo

By: Mohamed Rambo

HARGEISA (Somalilandsun) – The country is not going to participate in the May 7th Somalia conference to be held in London.

This is according to the president H.E Ahmed Mahmud Silanyo who made the announcement at the Egal international Airport in Hargeisa on Friday upon arrival from an official working tour of Turkey.

According to the head of state the conference to be co-hosted by the UK premiere David Cameroon and Somalia's President Hasan is solely a Somalia internal issues conference thus the non-participation of the country.

As he thanked the multitude of citizens gathered at the airport to welcome him and=d his entourage the president said:

"It is a great pleasure for me and my team to return back in good health and find the country peaceful as we left it"

"During our five days visit to Turkey which was unprecedented and land mark visit made for the first time" by a (seating) President of this country me and my delegation held constructive discussions with our Turkish counterparts where a number of tangible agreements were reached"

To the surprise of many and subsequent happiness of the same the President H.E. Ahmed Mohammed Mohamud stated categorically that the upcoming international meeting on Somalia to be held in May in the UK had nothing to do with Somaliland, thus the country will not be represented in it, hence forthwith end debate in public media to the effect that Somaliland would attend the meeting to her detriment.

Said he, "The meeting is focused on Somalia and SL has nothing to do with it

On the Salal region post-election political fall-out and tension that saw armed skirmishes in Harirad, the President said, "The VP was here in charge hence the state is there to maintain peace and stability" in the country at all times.

He said that as per democratic electoral processes, there was not going to be repeated elections hence conciliatory peaceful stability has to be precedent.

The President's delegations consisted of the First Lady Amina Haji Mohammed Jirdeh, the Minister of the Presidency Hon. Hirsi Ali Haji Hassan, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Education, Minerals and Water and MRR&R the honorable Dr. Mohammed Abdilahi Omar, Zamzam Abdi Adan, Hussein Abdi Duale and Suleiman Isse Hagaltosie respectively

Omar hassan al bashiirs goverment was not protected by Amisom forces nor did he need the blessings of Hillary Clinton. Somalia and Somaliland issue is different , where Somalia is not the mother country of Somaliland. But it was an equal partner in unity in 1960. Where as Sudan was the mother country of South Sudan and they seceded because of a referendum on independence. Somaliland and Somalia will have a dialogue on equal terms the clock must be set back prior to first of July 1960. But the dialogue of south sudan and sudan were between the SPLM and Bashiirs goverment in Kenya. Somaliland is not asking Somalia for independence they already took that it has to clarify its relations with Somalia and the international community will support such dialogue.

Anwar by the way no one is against talks with Somalia, the talks just should happen not at the conference but a joined organized conference by Somaliland and Somalia in a foreign country. Somaliland and Somalia cannot talk at a conference organized for Somalia.
