Arms Embargo should only be Lifted When Government Creates Viable National Army, Recruited from All

Recommended Posts

The current government in Mogadishu is dominated by one of the contestants of the civil war and resides in and around Benadir province – a hometown of one of the major Somali clans. Since the government has limited influence to localities beyond Benadir, the only pool of recruits and former clan militia fit for military service available to government are from this area. The view of many Somali analysts is that lifting arms embargo at this time will disproportionally benefit former clan militia in Benadir province.

The political reality of the country being in this state of flux and mistrust among Somalis being as high as nineties it is incumbent on International Community to see the demands by the government in Mogadishu through these lenses.

The embargo must be lifted only, and only if, the government in Mogadishu agrees to create a viable, competent and inclusive national army recruited from all corners of the country. Government must first establish centers of training and military bases in strategically located areas throughout the country.

A timely article.

What has transpired in this fora with respect to looted properties is another reminder as to why it is very important to prevent from arming Liqaye's of this world.

....Overwhelming majority of Somalis want to regain their sovereignty and see their government equipped with all the trappings of the sovereign state. All Somalis want to see Somali state that is secure within its borders and strong in the region. Few would object to the view that only the state (not unaccountable clan militia) should have the monopoly on force. What Somali people are opposed to is certifying one clan militia faction and bestowing them the honor of being called Somali National Army.

Somalia

I don't think the issue should be the clan make up of the so called army, but rather that it is a militia. And if it is a militia, alongside others around the nation, one should consider that it will be easier to import arms across the spectrum and each claiming to represent the army, a couple of false documents and corrupted officials can make it happen.

STOIC

Xiin, reveals the crass language of Somali clan politics and his wishy-washy support of Somali government (or lack of his support for policies of pragmatic patriotism). One minute he singing the Kumbaya for the blue Somali flag and government only to take it back immediately like an Indian-giver...You can't accuse the very same government you support as bloody-minded one clan project (as the whole article insinuates) . The army is suppose to be for the government you support.Your above statements reveal a level of hypocrisy and deceit.I doubt a government you dearly support will callously put your Somalia in peril. You are either fully in support of the government reviving its old institutions or you are just a phobic clanist looking to cut the head of the next snake slithering towards your clan...

Waa iska daciifnimo. Because it would reqire real Raganimo to do something about a perceived injustices than to complain about it.

Either way, I rather Xiinfaniin do this Online than go back where he could cause a real problem. ;)

Hahaha right on stoic, meeshu inaa ruwayaad uun laga waadho eeg, when it is needed the somali goverment is legitimate and federal, but when it over steps its boundaries in the minds of reer xiin, it becomes clan based and banadiir based, who is the defence minister, who is the armed forces cheif of staff, who is the chairman of the parliamentary defence committee??? Anyway regardless the lifiting of the arms embargo is just around the corner, when that happens, expect xiin to cover himself again with the particular laurels of victory of that endevour, some how some way, is their anything more pathetic than that?

niin yabaan dont worry you give sahal spokesmen too much credit, the internet is the first & last line of defence, nothing will happen on the ground, majiority of somalis kulaha, i.a let us see how this pans out.

Simpletons, one can support this government and it's attempts to bring Somalia back from the cliff and at the same Criticize itfor not being representative. Hasan has declared that he will no longer abid by the 4.5 formula. That's all fine and will unless that means that you mean every and all things will be filled by "your people". Overcoming past mistakes requires fairness 4.5 or no no 4.5. So far, this president has failed in this respect. In our eagerness to see Somalia stand on its feet, lets not forget the fairness that is required for this country to stand in its feet again. Injustice and unfairness is a bad start. Be it the formation of a national armed forces or political appointments. wish this president all the luck in the world but would still like to see him acting like a national leader rather the the governer of a region.

There is an old Somali saying: gacmoho wadajir bay wax ku goyan. The time of rer hebel vs. rer hebel is over. We sink or swim together. Someone needs to remind this president and you hapless critics of Xiin of that.

Tolow Nin-Yaaban maxaa qaniinay?

Like NN said , this is a legitimate issue and Somali people will continue to weigh in. It is not about xiinfaniin, ya gushuush. It is about Somalia.

As for Liqaye's new (new because he had a little more decorum than this before), open mo0ryaanism, and Irirsm nonsense that brought STOIC and co on board, that i say does nothing to change reality on the ground. Somalia needs to re institute its armed forces, it needs to build a cohesive national army. With Mogadishu as the current center of power, such all inclusive national army is not logistically, and politically possible. All the article suggested is the creation of bases and training centers with collaboration of current political stakeholders (i.e. Puntland, Somaliland, Khatumo, Galmadug, Jubba ...) . In other words, the wolf shouldn't be left to tend to the sheep again without safeguards and protection (and that is for my old friend Liqaye)

Xiin niin yabaan waxaa qaniinay qabyalada caad oo loo cimamadheyn aad meesha ka waadid, which is your only prescription for every thing that the federal government is trying to do, if you have no Idea about the terms and conditions of both the Turkish-Somalia military cooperation deal as well as the terms of the lifting of the Somalia arms embargo gaartey and "we" will enlighten you, but as usual your insincere recruitment of clan fears to bludgeon the government at birth will not work, it is imperative that a NATIONAL army is built and that is how its going to be done with every pre 1991 regions of Somalia getting the same amount of new recruits either as privates, NCO's as well as the new officer class that will be trained in Ankara, the U.N lifting of the ban will be partial for the next 4 years limited to light weaponry and protective non-offensive Armour such as Amour ed personnel carriers and armored battle field ambulances.

As I keep on repeating you are not today or have you ever been sincere, either in terms of the federal constitution that you have admitted severally is designed to keep one particular moo.ryaan clans aspirations boxed in [in your own feverish mind] or in terms of this government that for you functions purely inaa laga mantajiyo a certain clans ill gotten gains, but when the government representative of all Somalis beyond your starbucks coffee clique grabs the reigns of responsibility according to the aspirations of the Somalis who extend beyond your starbucks coffee clique, it becomes a one man entity or at the very most banadiir based :), continue accusing any one of an iota of deductive logic as bringing back irirism or what ever you called it, I do not know Stoic beyond his contributions to this forum and have never even parlayed with him, when he pointed out the nonsense of your faux logic you immediately accuse him of a term as a sijui boy he has probably never even heard of.

That is the sickness in your logic and the inanity of your cantrabaqash, do you think no one is aware of your hypocrisy??

The federal government will rebuild the army into a professional national institution one dedicated to the protection of the countries borders rather than into a replica of the genocide squad of your MOD paramountcy, you are right the old days are over but for the overwhelming majority of Somalis this includes the era before 1991 :)

You are right 4.5 is over was this not the position of you meritorious puntlanders? I am glad that 4.5 in all goverment appointments is dead, even the federal parliament deleted this absurdity with the appointment of new parliamentary committees on the basis of merit and the knowledge of the member M.P's applying for the different committees, if 4.5 was used you would not have two women in cabinet or two so called minorities heading two important and powerful ministries, I shudder to think of a proffessional military promoting or dismissing on the basis not of the stand bys of a successful military but strict 4.5
