Xagle Toosiye’s Mission to Destroy Khaatumo State

25 July 2012

At the beginning of the Second War, when Europe was gripped by fear of Hitler’s warmongering expansionist Germany, Britain’s Prime Minister at the time, Neville Chamberlain, went to Berlin to see Hitler, hoping he could avert war between their two countries. Hitler obliged and the two signed a piece of paper to that effect. While for Hitler this peace accord was nothing more than an exercise to fool the British and the rest of Europe, poor Chamberlain took Hitler at his word and returned to London on 30 September 1938 triumphantly waving the piece of paper to welcoming crowd, claiming that he has secured “peace for our time” from Hitler. Only soon after that, Hitler was on the war rampage, occupying most of Europe, and Britain would have fallen too if it was not for the USA intervention in the war and the sacrifices of the gallant Soviet Red army. Chamberlain has paid the price for his gullibility and has since been relegated to the dustbin of history as a figure of disdain whose name since then is synonymous with appeasement.

Something similar has happened on 24 July much closer to our own part of the world when the former SSC Hogaan (leader), Suleiman Cisse Ahmed, aka Xagle Toosiye, returned in style to Buuhoodle, proudly declaring that he has brought “peace in our time” for the Buuhoodle people (not the SSC people, mind you ). Incredibly, this generosity to the Khaatumo people is, of all people, from the leaders of Somaliland and Puntland, who loathe each other in all other ways but are united in their unholy alliance to bring down the Khaatumo State if they can and ensure the SSC regions remain their prey for their different reasons. The unspoken condition from the agent of these Khaatumo predators is that they accept him as their only leader who has their interest at heart, and, as their leader, they should follow his advice to look after their own interest as Buuhoodle people, dissociate themselves from the rest of their SSC compatriots and dispense with the Khaatum State altogether. This audacious invitation to trust and throw their lot with their enemies is bound to ring hollow in the ears of his listeners in Buuhoodle.

No one of course loves peace more than the Buuhoodle people. But they are no fools and only know too well that the peace he has in mind is one of surrendering to other clans’ tutelage and servitude. Memories are still fresh in their minds of the number of times in the past when Siilaanyo tried to lull them into a false sense of security with bogus peace overtures, only to launch pre-emptive attacks on Buuhoodle the next day. And true to their past, Somaliland’s militia went on the attack last night from their position in the Buuhoodle region barely hours after Xagle Toosiye made his speech.

Until now, most people assumed that Xagle Toosiye has given up on political comeback. At least that was the impression since the establishment of Khaatumo in Taleex in January 2012, when he become a recluse sulking in his bunker in Buuhoodle, increasingly disappearing from public attention but still remembered for the Titanic collapse of his political and business fortunes. As if reanimated, he has now bounced back with a splash into the news headlines, casting himself not as the defender of the SSC community for which he was at one time its head (Hogaan), but as the advocate of the Buuhoodle people alone and with an undeclared mission to destroy the Khaatumo State. Never one to accept defeat gracefully, he has refused to come to terms with the establishment of Khaatumo State not because he is in principle against it – after all it is a revamped SSC- but because he is not its head.

How a man that was at one time the sworn champion and leader of the SSC people as a whole could turn around and become a henchman for Siilaanyo and Faroole, implementing their conspiracy against his people, entailing sowing divisions and disarray amongst them along geographical lines ( Haud vesus Nugal) and leading to the demise of the whole Khaatumo edifice with all its adverse consequences for its people, is difficult to comprehend even by the standards of previous SSC betrayals. Far from winning hearts and minds, Suleiman will only deepen his irrelevance in the SSC/Khaatumo politics. Like Chamberlain, he will be remembered for his catalogue of bad judgements and political failures.
