Ngonge, I never heard of a mother using the word Walaal to call her son, unless the mother is 9 years old:D Normally mothers use the word Hooyo. Laakiin wey jiraan rag xaaskooda ugu yeedha Walaal. Waxaa kuwaas u fiicnaan lahayd in ay isticmalaan ereyga Gacaliso, ama Macaaneey.

This is the advantage that my handicap Somali has over yours, Showqi. Aniga khasab ayaay igu tahay in aan o fiirsado hadalada o dhan, adiga "auto pilot" ayaad ku jirta oo "mistakes" badan ayaa ku dhaafa. Such as mothers calling their sons "walaal". I have seen it so many times, ninyaho. Dee waa sida tii ninka gabadh Layla la yidhaahdo guursaday markaaso is ilaaway oo qof walba 'Laylaay' ugu yeedhay. It's force of habit rather than her meaning to call him walaal. Wax fahma.

Sujus mostly use "Abay and Abow(not the italizised version of Abaayo,Aboowe)...Just the clean and simple Abay and Abow...

The swahili version of Abaayo is "Dadangu" or the more modernized version of "Supuu"...there is also a swahilized one where they say "Sistee"....So to use in a sentence, you would say: "skuu skuu...Oh ye siste/ supuu Niaje??"[roughly translated as "abayo, warka keen" or Wazzup boo] :)

Ms MoOns

I only say aboowe to my actual brothers and (male) cousins and abaayo for most Somali sisters.

Macaan & Qalbi for one specific person.

P.s. I hate using walaal, it sounds so, qofka inaad iska fogeyneysid. Impersonal.

^^^I I despise that word even when a woman uses it-no matter the context. Some girl at the mall one day..said “nayaa..nayaa…Caato…blah blah…you don’t remember me..?” I was like F#*&, I turned around either way coz she had few kids w/her-and told her not to address me as such..if she can’t say walaal, abaayo..etc & walked away. I don't recall what she said next but i was fuming to say the least at her audacity...
