A positive development. Dr. Abdiweli has done an excellent job in facilitating this reconciliation between Faroole and Sharef.

It is time for Somali leaders to move beyond the personal bickering.

Well said Abwaan, but don't you get misled by the cheap and convulted patriotism of Che and his terror group, the argument of Somalia being run by Mahiga and whatever foriegn power have you, would only be valid if and only if the terror group of Al-shabab had the Somali intrest at heart instead of introducing a black flag while burning the Republic's flag.

Somalia: SRSG welcomes President Sheikh Sharif’s visit to Puntland

PRESS RELEASE 016/2011

The UN Special Representative for Somalia, Dr Augustine P. Mahiga, has welcomed the visit by President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed to Puntland saying “it marks a new chapter in the relations between the Transitional Federal Government and Puntland”.

The visit was facilitated by the UN Political Office for Somalia, ahead of the High Level Consultative Meeting on Ending the Transition which is due to be held in Mogadishu from 4 – 6 September. President Sheikh Sharif invited President Abdirahman Mohamed Mohamud ‘Farole’ of Puntland to attend the Consultative Meeting.

The SRSG said the meeting was “a credit to the statesmanship of both President Sheikh Sharif and President Farole and opens the way for the advancement of national reconciliation and cooperation in Somalia. This is particularly critical as the Somali leadership and their partners prepare for the Consultative Meeting to adopt the Roadmap defining priority tasks for the next 12 months as agreed in the Kampala Accord.”

The SRSG paid tribute to the two leaders for setting a positive tone towards consolidating peace, saying he expected this to be replicated in other regional administrations.

“We, the regional and international partners, stand ready to render any support the people of Somalia require as they make efforts to move the peace process forward,” stated Dr Mahiga.

Che, the word on the street says that this was Mahiga idea, after all the TFG has started taking orders from Mahiga after Farmaajo's departure.

Word on the street?

This was a much-anticipated visit by the transitional President and a manifestation of his political maturity. Good for Somalia.

Johny B welcome back awoowe , it’s been awhile since you graced these boards with a visit. :)

With all of his shortcomings, Sharif has always been a moderate in his conduct both in politics and beliefs. Coming out from Kampala as a victor, relatively speaking, vanquishing the rascal speaker and effectively fighting off Faroole’s challenge to the term extension, Sharif was presented with an opportunity to lead …visit Puntland and put the lingering small disagreements to rest. Not discounting Mahiga’s role, or Abdiweli’s fast network in Garoowe, I give full credit to Sharif as he did what is required of him. He would’ve been blamed if he had not done it, and so he shall get the credit when he does it.

A two day preparatory conference in Mogadishu, followed up with a full-fledged conference is a great start.

Xiin, there are some weird coincidences from Faroole's side, he was with the TFG when Ina Sharmarke was there and cut all the ties with TFG when Farmaajo was appointed. All of the sudden when Ina Gaas took over, he is back on board LOL. Waa cajiib! I am sorry but I don't see any tangible result coming out of the coming up conference. Meesha Xarash nooc kala ah baa ka socdo and the fact shariif canbe is the current president is not helping it.

This is nothing but merely another project to milk international donors, what is the agenda of this meeting? and what does it mean half in Mogadishu and Half in Garowe?

Agree, this is another Majiga project, and mark my word, it will yield nothing, Why can't the Somali people do it themselves without Mahiga and Sh!t!
