Nin-Yaaban, dont you pity those Somali brothers arresred for few leaves of khat. I hardly call that a crime. I think we should exclude them from this thread atleast, its already a shame they are being arrested for something which is legal in most African countries and Europe.

AUGUSTA — A Lewiston High School student who wrote about leaving Somalia and adapting to a new country is one of three winners of a statewide writing contest for high school juniors.

Fadumo Musse is believed to be the first to win the annual writing contest whose native language is not English, Maine Community College System spokeswoman Elly Chase said Friday.

The other two students, who also won MCCS’s “A Journal Into Writing Contest” and named the 2013 Governor’s Young Writers of the Year, are Emily Evans of Searsport and Arianna Tang of Frankfort, both juniors at Searsport District High School.

Driver charged in fatal crash at Royal York and Lawrence

The driver of a stolen taxi cab involved in a three-vehicle crash that killed a man in his 60s and left his 39-year-old daughter in critical condition has been charged.

Police say
Abokar Ahmed-Ali
, 23, will face several charges, including:

Dangerous driving causing death.

Criminal negligence causing death.

Impaired driving.

Failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

Theft.

The collision happened at Royal York Road and Lawrence Avenue West shortly before 8:30 a.m. Monday.

A 23-year-old man was driving a taxi cab that had been stolen earlier in a fare dispute.

The cab company said the dispute began when the man was upset about his fare. The driver felt threatened, got out of the car and that's when the passenger allegedly climbed into the driver's seat and drove off.

The cab ran a red light at Royal York Road and Lawrence Avenue West and struck a pickup truck before flipping over and crashing into a Ford Escape. This sent the Ford into a pole, according to police.

The 42-year-old man from the pickup truck was also taken to hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries.

The driver of the stolen cab suffered minor injuries. He fled the scene but was arrested nearby.

Police say excessive speed was a factor in the crash.

3 charged with murder in Albion Road shooting

Three suspects arrested Monday in connection with the slaying of a 21-year-old man at an apartment building in the city's northwest have been charged with first-degree murder.

Toronto Police arrested 19-year-old Emmanuel Ansah around 5:30 p.m. Monday, as well as two minors. All three suspects are from Toronto.

The victim, identified as
Yusuf Ahmed
, was found suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body around 3 p.m. Monday at an apartment building near Albion and Weston roads, in the Rexdale neighbourhood. He was taken to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Emmanuel and the two other suspects, who cannot be named under young offenders legislation, were arrested with the co-operation of witnesses, neighbours and security camera footage.

The accused were scheduled to appear in court at 2 p.m. today at 2201 Finch Ave. W.

This is the city's 36th homicide of the year.

All in a week's work.

Seems like there is no shortage of excitements or mayhem going on in Toronto. :)

What's the background story about the killing of Yusuf Ahmed (AUN). None of the suspects have any Somali sounding names. Was this just being at the wrong place at the wrong time?

The adult guy who shot Yusuf Ahmed is Ghanian from what I understand, and I heard that atleast one of the two minors charged alongside him is Somali (their names were not released). Not much has been said about his background but his being shot in broad daylight outside his apartment building suggests that there must've been some pretty heavy beef for such a brazen shooting.

A lot of the homicide victims this year are disturbingly young.
