Gabay for Dummies

Kashafa

Odayasha iyo Abwaanta SOL oo mudan,

Meeshan waxaa naliga codsanaayaa inaa nagu caawinteen, hadanu nahay dhalanyarta oo qurbaha ku koray, gabayga Somaliga inaa nagu caawinteen. Maxa dhacay waa muheem jiddan oo taarikhda Somaliyeed iyo culture-keena faham-kiisa baa ku jirto. Hadaba format-ka(ama qaab-ka) waa sithaan soo socoto: Hal gabay oo classical camal eh ayaa la soo dijinaa, marka waa la sharaxaa macnaheesa iyo Vocab-ga adag waa la macnaynaa

Here's an excellent example, with a outstanding explanation by Xiinka Faneenka.

With one funny line, Abdi-Gaheir showcased the importance and value that the Camel has in our lives: Aakhirana nimaan geel laheyn lama amaaneynee :D

Topic-starter gets first pick. Vaguely remember it but something along the lines of:

Wiil labo iyo toban jiro haduu lali ahaan waayo

oo habayn saq-dhexe martitha caano oo keeno waaye

oo neef oo qali waaye, iga tag ninkaas nin jiro ma ahan. lol..not exactly like that but same general meaning( If you can't marti-soor at age 12, then you're a bum, basically)...Could somebody post the whole gabay and explain it ?

Afeedoonaa macsharal Abwaans

Baashi

Kix kix kix @ iga tag ninkaas nin jiro ma ahan.

And Kashafa wanted to paraphrase this stanza:

Wiil haduu labiyo toban jiroo laqan ahaan waayo

….

Raganimo ludeed kuma jidhee leexaye ogaada!

:D

Here is one for you yaa Kashafa.

Adduun gaban ah, ubad wada habla ah, oori kululaatay,

Waa waxaan sidaa ula engagay, urugadoodiiye,

Ilma-adeeradaaa geela way, igu ag maalaane,

Ayaantii kastaba boostadaan ku ag wareegaaye,

Haddaan aradka gaalada fadhiyo, kuma ilaaweene,

Haddaan aabahaa ahay maxaad, ii anfici weday?

1. Words of interest:

gaban:

ubad:

engag:

urugo:

2. Moral of the poem?

Now the poem is about a hard-pressed father with extended family trying to make the ends meet. As urbanite fleeing from tragic and cut-throat civil war, he was forced to live at the country side.

He didn't get any support from relatives and in-laws! Once proud and slef-reliant civil servant, this father has tasted the bitter life of nomadic existence. With spoiled daughters coming of age and go-getter wife who used to live in a la vita dolce, he was struggling to provide his family and at the same time keep his head up. His only son didn't come to the rescue. He had a high expectation from his son.

One day he met someone from Finland, the story goes, who happen to know his son. This guy was leaving within hours. Mohamed Daad wrote this poem on a letter and asked the man to pass along to his son.

Once he read the letter, heart-broken and guilt-feeling son emptied his accounts and send every penny he has to his family. The second letter he recieved from his father read:

Xamdi mahad Allaa igu xawilay, walad xalaaleede,

Xamdi mahad anoon xoogsan baan, xayn ka buuxsadaye,

Xamdi mahad xigaalo iyo tol iyo, xidid haddaan yeeshay.

^^Amaa wiilkaas adiga ahayd Baashoow? :D Walllee waa inaan xaal weydiisto intii igu xaman jirtay in aan gacan adeyg dartiis aboor ahay (Xiin). :D Maxaa yeelay nin baa (Baashi) ka bukooda erayga "Soo dhiib", kuna farxa erayga "Hoo". :D:D

Wallee Gabaygaasi waa gabay ul kulul, xodxodasho, xiniinyo taabsi, jiriiriconah wato buu ahaa.

Topic kaan waa toopic aan aad iyo aad u jecleystay waana mid aad iyo aad u muhiim ah aley lehe.

Mahad gaar ah waxaa leh ninkii mowduucaan noo furay (Kashafa), Mahad wiriqsan oo wanaagsan neh waxaa mudnaan doonta abwaanta waqtigooda na siineysa in ay wax fahanka murtida afkeena hooyo noo saa'idiyaan.

Ilaahey haka abaal mariyo intii ka qeyb qaadata iyo intuu damac ka galo iyo intaan kala jecleynba.

^^Yaa yiri dalku waa nabad haddii checkmate soo noqday :D !

Ayaantii kastaba boostadaan ku ag wareegaaye,

Haddaan aradka gaalada fadhiyo, kuma ilaaweene,

Haddaan aabahaa ahay maxaad, ii anfici weday?

^^Wallee wuu garnaqsaday.

Kashafa, try Baashi's homework saaxiib and see if you understand them selected-words.

As for the expectation thing, you know good Kashafa, when the real abwaans show up Xiin’s play abruptly ends. Yet I will IA contribute as time permits. You had me crack up with laugh with your ‘iga tag ninkaas nin jiro ma ahan’ line… it was a case of speaking more truth than grammar :D .

^^ My merchandise in somali poetry is scanty and poor, Xiinfaniinoowe. Fa'awfi lana al-kayla wa tasaddaq calaynaa innallaaha yajzi al-mutasaddiqiin, thusly do we paupers of poetry seek instruction from the litterateurs. :D

Kashafa, Ina Nibiri laqay :D , since you've tried your taste palates on guubaabo iyo waano, bal madiixan ila eeg. What is poetry without Ammaan?

Gabayxoogii Aadan Dubbe

Deggane Maxamedow waxaynu nahay, ul iyo diirkeede

Dadka kale ha joogee adaan, iga digtoonayne

Raggiinii dariiqada ka yimid, durug warkiisiiye

Dunjigiisba waan wada jeclaa, degaha Reer Nuure

Wixii duub leh deris baanu nahay, iyo Daraawiishe

Sayid Maxamed dooduu i yidhi iyo daabbada uu keenay

Waa ii soo duceeyaye Allow darejadiis raaji

Muslin oo dhan baa diiq ku jirey, jeeruu daahiraye

Awliyada duushuu carshiga, kula dekeeyaaye :D

Ninba wuxuu debnaha ugu hayiyo daarka iyo laabta

Daniguu gartaa waxa qalbiga, kaga dahsoonaaye :D

Kun halaad nin subax soo didshoo duul u yimid siiyey

Oo aanay duntaa iyo la noqon dibi la loogaayo

Nin la diini kama soo if bixin, duniyadeenneere

Dirir Ferenji baa ugu badnaa, dab iyo baaruude

Isagiiba dabaq buu ku riday, duhur dharaareede

Dabar iyo hogaan buu ku xidhay, duluflahoodiiye

Vocabulary:

Dunjigiisa

dekeeyaaye

loogaayo

In any event, this panegyric is about the Sayyid; the diction is not too rare or complex. The meaning thereof will not be lost upon even the womenfolk.

Though excessive [highlighted] a bit, the composer of these verses captured the real sentiment of most Somalis toward Sayid and his dervish movement. I like it. Who’s this man yaa Muttakalim? Laftigiisa mindhaa darwiish ahaa :D !
