NAIROBI, Kenya — An Islamic insurgent group that controls much of lawless Somalia has released a video showing its members vowing allegiance to Osama bin Laden, training in dusty camps and slamming Somalia's U.S.-backed president as a traitor.

The tape was released late Sunday by al-Shabab, an insurgent group that last week hit the African Union peacekeeping base with suicide car bombs, killing 21 people in the deadliest single attack on peacekeepers since they arrived in 2007.

Al-Shabab announced the Thursday attack at Mogadishu's airport was in retaliation for a U.S. commando raid on Sept. 14 that killed al-Qaida operative Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan in southern Somalia.

The United States has become increasingly concerned that al-Qaida insurgents are moving into anarchic Somalia, where they can mobilize recruits without interference.

The video showed the Shabab militia in training, leaping over piles of sandbags, crawling on the ground and shooting at targets. White-skinned bearded trainers could be seen moving among the Somalis. The video also showed crowds chanting: "
At your service Osama
!"

Sheik Hassan Ya'qub, a spokesman for al-Shabab, said the video is "aimed at showing how the youth are well-trained and ready to the defend their holy land." Shabab means "youth" in Arabic.

Bin Laden has declared his support for Somali insurgents before. The new video shows the mutual affection is strong as ever — a growing concern for U.S. and other governments. Al-Qaida bombed the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, killing more than 200 people, and one of the alleged plotters is believed to be hiding out in Somalia. Stronger ties between al-Qaida and al-Shabab could pose greater threats to Western interests in the region.

The video features periodic commentary from a voice purported to be bin Laden's, criticizing the administration of Somali President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed as un-Islamic for its ties to America. Sharif met last month with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who pledged to expand American support for Somalia's government.

The comments from the al-Qaida leader echo comments of support he made in March. It was not immediately clear if they were from the same recording.

Ahmed, a moderate Islamist, was elected president in January and hopes to unite the country's feuding factions.

"How can intelligent people believe that yesterday's enemies, on the basis of religion, can become today's friends?" the voice purported to be bin Laden's said in a voice-over as his photo was shown.

Somalia has been ravaged by violence and anarchy since warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 and turned on each other. Piracy has flourished off the Somali coast, making the Gulf of Aden one of the most dangerous waterways in the world.

On Sunday, insurgents attacked a town near the border with Ethiopia, killing at least 10 people, witnesses and officials said.

I wonder what Sheikh Aweys will make of this development. Aweys has always been adamant that this Jihad is about liberating Somalia and safeguarding it from foreign domination. His statements regarding this issue were categorical and unambiguous.

Al-Shabab have turned this notion on its head.

Will Sheikh Aweys reproach Al-Shabab in this instance or simply go along with them, as he has done on other matters - at the cost of undermining his earlier pronouncements?

Unlike other disagreements between Aweys and Al-Shabab - this one will be hard to ignore or justify. Al-Shabab have really put Aweys in a tight spot this time around. Aweys is likely to lament this development but do so quietly.

It is real, and even on tape.

They praised Al-Qaida, pleaded their allegiance during the Ciid celebration.

This is also nothing new, remember when Abu Mansuur onces said that they will welcome foreigners who want to help us and that they will give these foreigners (Non-somalis) our daughters and even share with them our farms.

Here it is on tape for those people denying it:

check it from 1.17 min onwards.

How are those who want to give Somali women to Non-Somali foreign fighters as reward any better than those inviting Ethiopians and Africans to come and rape our women?

Somalia is the land of the Somali, and only they can solve their problems. All those NON-SOMALI fighters should be evicted from our country and those that invite NON-SOMALI fighters are guilty of High Treason

Those opportunists who want to attract guys who are tired of life by promises of Somali women and farms are no better than those opportunists who invite Ethiopians and African troops who than rape our women and displace our people.

Perhaps for once instead of 24/7 criticizing the other camp (TFG) you should stop and look in the mirror: those you support are no better than the other camp!

You don't know the meaning of criticism. Your someone who can't even accept that he could ever be wrong. If someone critices your point, you reply with an even great hyberbole or another gross exaggerration. Comparing Somalis who voluntarily wish to marry their daughter to Muslim Araebs/others- to those who allow Xabashis and Ugandans to RAPE Somali girls shows that the ridiclous state your nonsense has reached and how much you actually believe in your own waffle. There is no comparison between the two and both you and I know it. So, please cut the rubbish for once.

Gaashaanle Aweys kistoo Soomaalinimo inay ku jirto waala ogyahay and I don't think they will see eye to eye waxa ka socdo Soomaaliya. Convenience's sake baa isku keentay with a declared common political enemy than being effective political ally.

If they ever happen to succeed, which it would not happen, the next day iyaga isku dhacaayo. That is a guarantee. Aweys and his group will be another declared enemy in the eyes of kuwa la baxay Dhalinta, sidee Shariifka cadowgooda ka dhigteen ka dhigan lahaayeen. Marka, Bilaaloow, hadduu Aweys ka hadlo ama la hadlo iyaga, it won't change a mark.

MMA, waa saas. Aweys waxba kama badali karo Al-Shabab. Aweys held romantic notions of uniting the resistance under the one umbrella when he came back from Asmara. He thought the likes of Rooboow and Godane would respect his impressive accolades and look to him as an elder of the resistance. Instead, they've treated him with contempt.

Their memories are short. It was Aweys' return which galvanized their movement and gave it clout. Si xun beey odayga oola dhaqmeen.
