The aspiring academic had difficulty keeping his clan biases in check. While he had not a word to say about the Siyad Barre regime's genocidal repression of the **** and other clans, he dedicates several pages in his thesis to lamenting the "revenge and ethnic cleansing against the innocent ****** clan family" which came in the wake of the dictator's fall. In particular he seems to have a bone to pick with the ****** clan-family which, in his view, "lacked discipline and a sense of purpose" and whose leaders "were confused as to what their priorities should be." In fact, he asserts "one thing that they did not care so much about was protecting the weak and vulnerable people of the capital." (With opinions like these, one wonders what kind of welcome Farmajo expects from the Mogadishu's well-armed ****** clansmen if his nomination is approved and he ever moves into the prime ministerial suite in the city's besieged Villa Somalia presidential compound.)

The SNM’s guerrilla army briefly seized two major cities in Northern Somalia – Hargeisa and Buro – in 1988. Barre and his superior American weapons reacted by emphatically crushing the SNM movement. Barre and his superior American weapons reacted by emphatically crushing the SNM movement. He essentially leveled the rebel cities. Many civilians died in the crossfire; thousands more fled their homes for the countryside, where water and shelter were short.

European colonies naturally favored the tribes that proved their loyalty. These were offered a place in government civil service and law enforcement. These occupations come with a level of privilege and authority that some tribes enjoyed exclusively for years. Additionally, this new opportunity lured many nomads to move into urban areas to seek administrative employment. Most importantly, when European imperialist decided to give up their colonies in Somalia, they rewarded top leadership positions to the tribes and individuals closest to them. For instance, in the Northern colony of British Somaliland, the ***** tribe was awarded virtually all of the best jobs for its collaboration with the imperialists. In the South, the Italian colony found similar willingness in two loyal tribes: the ********** of the ****** clan and the Mudulod, sub-clan of the ******. These two southern tribes helped the Italians without reservation. In return, Italian and British colonies enabled these clans to claim some superiority over the other clans in terms of wealth, scholarship for their children in London and Rome, and future government influence in the post-decolonial era. Naturally, when the Somali government was formed, most parliamentary seats went to those tribes that had been loyal to the colonial rulers, as they were seen as best suited to stability. Somalia’s first president, Adan Abdulle Osman, is a prime example. He was a former civil servant under the Italians as a member of the Mudulod, ****** sub-clan. On the other hand, his prime minister, Italian-educated Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, came from the other favorite tribe, the ********** of the ****** clan. This arrangement did not change until the election of 1968, when the Somali parliament elected Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke as the second president of the country. He selected as his prime minister English-educated Mohamad Ibrahim Egal from the ***** clan of the former British Somaliland

Lordy lord! The "Gedo moustachio" was a major clue. :D

Truth to be told and,the book must/should be open to scrutiny but imperialists have consistently favored friendly indigenous groups throughout history while depriving the rights of those so called unfriendly tribes, is there any secrecy about that?

It was the reason Siyad Barre regime was first welcomed, to get rid off bloody agents left by the colonials,It is the truth.

The claim that leading politicians from some tribes achieved political prominence only as a result of colonial favoritism is both ahistoric and myopic. Enemies of the democratic process always label their opponents as agents of an external hegemon. Somalia would have been a very different place had Barre not contravened and crushed the nascent democracy of the 60s.

Enemies of the democratic process always label their opponents as agents of an external hegemon. Somalia would have been a very different place had Barre not contravened and crushed the nascent democracy of the 60s.

I am reminded of something the former American ambassador to Somalia, Peter Bridges, said to once Somali Interior Minister Maxamed Maxamoud Jaango'an. He said "above all, Somalis are fabulously arrogant. Here I am, doing my best to get the Africaphiles in the department of State of my country to notice this nation while I am left thinking Somalis are the center of the world anytime I speak to one." The reality and history of of colonists with respect to the colonized societies is rife with colonists favoring those communities perceived to have been favorable and amenable. I mean how can you speak with ignorance when some of the biggest atrocities in Africa have foundation in such; particularly in Africa's most well known genocide as relating to the events in Rwanda where the French favored the Tutsi, 10% of society, over the Hutu, 80% of society, resulted in heinous action from pent up frustration and anger?

It is well know that some Somali clans accepted colonial and missionary schools prior to others which led to a perceived prominence in the defunct 60's you label a "nascent democracy". Nascent democracy is not 160 political parties of every clan, ministers saying I am 35 with 35 million shillings, or an inability to get something as simple as a national ortography passed stretching to a full decade.

There is a reason why all Somalis reacted with such joy and exhilaration to the slogans of siinaan, midnimo, cadaalad, and horumar by the men who took power in 1969 and no amount of revisionism using post-1978 Siad actions as base can change with respect to the legitimacy of the coup in 1969.

Prof. Cabdi Ismaaciil Samater wuxuu fajiciso ku tilmaamey in Madaxweyne Shiikh Shariif uu Raiisul Wasaare u magacaabo shaqsi ku xadgudbey Taariikhda Dalka iyo Ummadda Soomaaliyeed, wuxuuna u soo jeediyey Shacabka Soomaaliyeed in isku duubnaan ka yeeshaan Raiisul Wasaaraha la magacaabay Maxamed Cabdulaahi Farmaajo, maadaama ay Dhuuxiisa ka buuxaan meel ka dhacyadii uu u geystey Qabaailka Soomaaliyeed sidoo kale wuxuu ugu baaqey in ay meel uga wada jeestaan Dowladda Federaalka oo maalin kasta xasuuqaya Ummadda soomaaliyeed oo xitaa laga waayey in ay ka hadlaan xadgudubyadaas.

I found it frightening that Farmaajo would diminish the dignified struggles of Somali clans in that epoch of tyranny, to nothing more than gaining back "lost significance". Equally astonishing is how the Prime-Minister-Select disparages the accomplishment and record of democrats such as Aadan Cadde, as a derivative of colonial prejudice. It is mind-boggling, to say the least. Before I'd read his thesis, like most Somalis, I'd taken a liking to Farmaajo, whose persona I had seen as positive. I now view him as a biased adherent of the old Siyaadist half truths. But then again, he is probably miles better than the parliamentarian gangsters holding our nation hostage in Mogadishu. Qofba qof buu dhaamaa.

Alloow Alle!

The same can be said of the frustration and anger against Siyad barre regime, in which ,those who oppressed, hated government, and civil order, and what it stands for, for them goverment meant Siyad Barre, and that is what happen in 1990s after So many injustice, anger over the clanish and nepotism by Siyad Barre regime, The same story of Hutu vs Tutsi, was replicated in Somalia.

The whole Somali history needed revisit, and we should not favour or look with one dimension. SYL members , and those who accepted 1/3 of the Somali lands to be free share also the blame.

The pro-Italian groups who dominated and ruled the country in 1960s were far from democracy.

Who are you calling pro Italian? the men who liberated the country from Colonial rule? The founding fathers of Somalia. Adeer first think about what you are saying. It was after all the civilian government that gave Siyad Barre his daily bread and it was him who committed treason.

Farmaaje’s thesis gives an insight into his political thinking, which is quite primitive.

Also these clans some here along with Farmaaje have insulted, turned out to be the strongest within the state since 1991, thus who is supporting them now, the Colonial powers?

:D
