UN peacekeeping chief worried about Somalia mission

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. peacekeeping chief Jean-Marie Guehenno said on Tuesday he was worried about a possible plan to send U.N. troops to Somalia when it is unclear who controls militants on the ground.

Fighting in the lawless Horn of Africa country between government forces and Islamist insurgents has left more than 8,000 civilians dead over the past year and forced 1 million from their homes.

The interim government of Somalia, a country whose main exports are sheep and goats, and its exiled opposition initialed a deal in Djibouti last month calling for the deployment of U.N. peacekeepers and a ceasefire after a month.

However, that pact was rejected by Somalia's Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, an Islamist who recently claimed to have taken over the country's exiled opposition, the Alliance for the Re-Liberation of Somalia.

"The political process is very elusive," said Guehenno, who steps down this month after eight years in the job. "The people who sign agreements ... how much of the guns on the ground do they control?

"If their control of guns is at best weak or ... nonexistent, then the agreements will not be a solid foundation for a peacekeeping operation."

The Security Council has been reluctant to send U.N. peacekeepers to Somalia, where warlords, Islamist insurgents and Ethiopian-backed Somali government forces are battling.

The African Union has said its peacekeeping force cannot stabilize Somalia and asked for U.N. troops instead.

Despite his reservations about Somalia, Guehenno said it was hard to deny peacekeeping missions, "How can you say 'no' when you are the last resort?"

These white *******s fcuked up somalia big time.

We had peace, law and order under the union of Islamic courts, that had chased out the warlords from somalia.

Mogadishio port was opened for the first time in 11 years because of the UIC

Than they came up with news that somalia was not free and that somalis could not freely eat jaad and watch porn.

So they overthrew the ICU and brought murdering raping ethiopians that have turned the 6 months peace and progress of somalia completely 180 degrees.

Fact--Somalia is today the worst disaster after they thrown out the UIC and brought in African union troops and ethiopians in the country with all the hated warlords back into somalia.

Yes somalis are free today to eat Jaad and watch porn, but are they free to live in peace?

Now they are saying that they can't finish what they started by sending in UN troops and thus somalis are back to square one, at the mercy and hands of thuggish warlords renamed the TFG this time along with barbaric ethiopians.

People just forget things too fast... Yes, Somalia is in dire situation, but it's not its worse or worse than in early 1990s. Yes Mogadishu saw a relative peace under UIC, but that doesn't mean Somalia went back to rule of law where everything was so rosy. Yes 8000 lost their lives and million people have been forced out of their homes in the last 18 months of this mayhem, so does it happened in 1988 in the north where 1000s have lost their lives and more fled their homes. And again in 1991-93 where close to half a million people perished in the south by gun, famine and hunger, and some drowned while fleeing. And millions have been forced out of their homes.

So NO, Somalia isn't in it's worse time, Somalis have died before, they are dying now, and will continue to die as long as we keep blaming others for our failure and keep fighting for nothing. And no one wants or cares what you watch or chew. We should f**8 sit down and compromise, that's the only way out if this deep shty we in.
