Somali Pirates Seize Somaliland Aid Trucks

Recommended Posts

Somali pirates in Puntland seized food aid trucks and their drivers to obtain the release of detained comrades, officials said Friday, in a rare land attack by the sea bandits.

The five trucks had been contracted by the UN’s World Food Programme and had finished delivering food aid in the Galkayo area, in the semi-autonomous northern Somali state of Puntland, which harbours several major pirate lairs.

They were on their way back to Berbera, the main port in the neighbouring breakaway state of Somaliland, when a gang of pirates intercepted them on Thursday.

“The pirates hijacked five trucks with nine people onboard and took them to their base in Garaad. They are demanding the release of their colleagues arrested recently by the Somaliland security forces,” Abdullahi Mohamed, a security official in Galkayo, said by phone.

“We heard pirates took civilians from Somaliland region as hostages and we are still investigating the incident,” police officer Colonel Dahir Jama said.

The Somaliland authorities have arrested and jailed dozens of pirates from Puntland in the Gulf of Aden recently.

“We are treating the hostages well here in Garaad and our aim is to get our friends in the jails of Somaliland freed. We are not demanding anything else. When our friends are free and back home we will free the drivers and the trucks,” Abdi Jamal, a pirate, said by phone from Garaad.

Dozens of other trucks transporting food aid in the same region are stranded in Galkayo, their drivers afraid to continue.

“There are many trucks from Somaliland still here in Galkayo, too afraid to return, but we will give them escorts,” Jamal said.

Sacad; adeer these men dont recognise the Seychelles waters, let alone "Somaliland". Thus lets work to release the captives, though this could be an exagerated story, like Israel will recognise Somaliland.

Castro adeer, you sound depressed the fake nationalisam is not working for you anymore, is it lad? :D

^It is not about whether the pirate-turned-carjackers-turned-kidnapers, are wrong. That is just obvious to any sane person.

The issue is, whether or not the Pirateland administration can guarantee the safety of those travelling inside its territory. The answer to that is No! Because as happened, members of the Pirateland security themselves are double agents. In fact the security melitia get most of their wages from criminal activities such as these kidnapping which took place in Galkacayo.

As for the Somaliland born truckers and their trucks, they had UN-WFP papers to travel and its the UN to pressure the Pirateland Administration for their release. Any harm caused by the pirates or any lost of profits due to their imprisonment by the organised-criminal group, is on the UN to pay back.

So at the end of the day, the truckers will not lost much. But its the Pirateland administration which will get another RED MARK on its name as it has proved once again that it can not take care of the safety of those who use its roads.

Suldanka, who gives these RED MARKS of yours?

The Shankaroon groups are getting desperate with their cries of “Pirates” , remember Nato can do nothing in this area, let alone a clan that is having its own problems. You need to win the war against Riyaale first.

As for the security issues, have you solved the massacred of the poor innocent reer AWDAL folks, who were killed outside Gebelay? What admin is Shankaroon if they can not stop the SNM clan mob taking their anger against Riyaale, on poor AWDAL civilians?

Now don’t talk, so big adeer, you control nothing and have no power to deal with anyone, even this story about the pirates, could be as made up as Israel recognition of Shankaroon being a pretty girl. :D

Gen. Duke,

If these truckers that were kidnapped were just indivitual businessmen on their own, then the situation would have been much different. Their ordeal would been tried to be solved using traditional methods.

But no, these truckers are not indivituals on indivitual business trip taking the risk themselves. The UN is involved and contracted these truckers to move UN goods from one place to another and organised their travel documents and what have you. Now, it is the UN to bring them back safely.

As for the red mark... well if the Pirateland administration used to claim that it can not do anything about the Pirates because they are located in far away places... now the same criminals are doing the same crimes on the roads and inside Puntland urban centers. Hence, the Pirates and other criminal gangs are winning control over the land.

What that means is for everybody's take.

Somalia: Puntland allows release of WFP food convoy

18 Feb 18, 2010 - 8:30:29 AM

The government of Somalia’s Puntland state said it has given green light to a convoy of WFP-chartered trucks which have been stranded around Las Anod (capital of Sool administrative region) in recent days.

In a statement, Puntland said the move was taken in consideration of the suffering of people and after consultation held in Garowe Presidential Palace between government officials led by Vice-President H.E. Abdisamad Ali Shire and WFP officials.

“….In light of the difficult humanitarian situation facing our Somali brothers and the need to deliver the food aid, Puntland has decided…. To allow the convoy of trucks to pass through in order to deliver the food,” it stated.

However, the world food agency was blamed for failing to inform relevant authorities on this matter and also disobeying the road laws in Puntland.

Puntland expressed its gratitude to WFP for the vital services it provides to humanity worldwide, and especially for the Somali people.

Suldanka, are you threatening people with the UN?

Are they more valuable than Somali trucks?

Shame you can not get that colonial mentality out of your mind even after 50 years.

These tit for tat attacks, are useless, and in Burco its the "admin" that is car jacking.

Thus what are you to say lad? :D
