Arab states want U.N. to press Israel to leave Gaza:

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Arab states asked the U.N. Security Council on Thursday to demand that Israeli forces immediately withdraw from Gaza, but France and the United States criticized their proposed resolution as unbalanced.

The Arab draft resolution, introduced in the 15-nation Security Council by Qatar, condemned Israel's arrest and detention of dozens of elected Palestinian officials and the "large-scale military assault" in Gaza launched after Palestinian militants seized one of its soldiers.

The draft demanded that Israel "immediately cease its aggression" against Palestinian civilians, pull its forces out of Gaza and release the detained Palestinian officials.

It also expressed the council's appreciation, without elaboration, for efforts aimed at "finding a diplomatic solution for the issue of the release of prisoners including the Israeli soldier."

"It is not balanced enough, and we will propose amendments, and we think it requires a lot of work," French Ambassador Jean-Marc de la Sabliere told reporters after the council's initial closed-door talks on the draft.

"From a first look at this, we think it is far from anything that could be brought to a vote," added John Bolton, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

But Palestinian U.N. Observer Riyad Mansour said the text's supporters would show "all the necessary flexibilities to make the draft resolution as balanced as possible."

The Palestinians wanted the council to "send the appropriate signal to Israel, and maybe to both parties," that talks rather than military action were the best option for resolving the conflict, he said. "For the purpose of saving the life of one, you are killing so many. It doesn't make sense."

Israel sent tanks and troops into Gaza and detained dozens of Palestinian officials last week after Palestinian militants seized Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

The situation has steadily worsened since then, with 26 Palestinians -- civilians as well as militants -- killed since the offensive began, including 17 on Thursday alone.

QANCIYE

Do you guys still expect actions from Arabs?? kamoon ppl, rag ladhabo ayaad ka warsugaysaan. I just recently visited the Gulf particularly UAE, Qatar, I swear it feels more like North America and even way more westernized and wild. They even legalized prostitution etc so what else do you expect.

A Sheikh on our Friday prayer mentioned why Muslims mainly Arabs aren't doing or saying anything in regard to recent Israel's actions etc and he said when Muslims abscond the Caqiida and Islamic knowledge, that's what happens no feelings whatsoever
