What is the relationship between Ernesto Guevara de la Serna the Argentinean born doctor and the Somali born lawyer and teacher Sharif Sheikh Ahmed? Che was a revolutionary, the iconic socialist figure who championed the right of the working people and peasants all over the world. Ernesto Che was trained as a doctor while Sharif Sheikh Ahmed was trained as a lawyer, they both traveled widely before they chose their perilous social revolution over comfortable careers.

Ernesto (Che) Guevara saw the blight of the indigenous Indians and the poor in Latin America and that changed his conscience to become a revolutionary leader that led him to the mountains of Sierra Maestra in Cuba with Fidel Castro and overthrow of the Batista government and later into Bolivia where he was murdered.

Similarly, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed saw the blight of the Mogadishu people, abandoned, raped, murdered, tortured, looted, and kidnapped daily and that changed his conscience to become a revolutionary and change agent that led him to team up with brilliant military strategist and veteran of the Ethiopian Somali war Colonel Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys a Fidel Castro of Somalia.

Both men faced an incredible opposition. Ernesto (Che) Guevara with Fidel Castro faced Batiste government supported by the United States of America and the rich land owners of Cuba but they were able to defeat them with the help of the popular support of the Cuban people. Similarly, Sharif Ahmed and Hassan Dahir Aweys faced with formidable coalition of warlords supported by the United States and Ethiopia but they were able crush them with the popular support of the Somali masses.

Ernesto (Che) Guevara was a socialist with a deep conviction of right and wrong, he was concerned about the poor people and the exploited; similarly, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed is driven by the same conviction of right and wrong. He is concerned about the blight of the poor and exploited minority communities. For example Sharif Ahmed few days ago went to Dubai and asked the Somali Business men to lower the astronomical price they are charging to the average people and the poor. He cancelled the racist policy that gave the minority communities a smaller share of the parliament. He announced all Somalis are equal referring to the 4.5 division given to the minority tribes of Somalia while the dominant tribes get 5 shares. He asked the UN and NGO’s to distribute the aid food they are hoarding in storages.

It will be too early to predict the outcome but if history is any guide, the people of the Che always win even if the Che’s are killed by foreign enemies.

The son of pious a father, Sh. Ahmed mastered the Qur’an and Islamic theology at puberty. He later studied law at a Libyan university.

He was barely known beyond Jubba high school, where he taught geography and history during late 1990’s to early 2000. At some point, a valedictorian student of him was kidnapped by one the nefarious Mogadishu warlords for ransom.

Aghast by this action, he assembled a force that successfully freed the student. This victory provided him a daring conviction that he could put a squeezing halt on the notorious kidnapping-for-ransom business in the CC neighborhood, where he lived and worked. He was elected to head the Islamic Court of CC, which soon annihilated the organized gang activity in Towfiiq.

Sh. Ahmed realized that all organized gang and warlord activity could be curbed with courage and conviction. He embarked on an audacious plan to improvise a unified umbrella for more than the 30 individual Mogadishu Islamic courts, operated by distrustful clans.

Thought to be impossible, he detached almost all Islamic courts from their clans and amalgamated them into a new force, dubbed “The Union of Islamic Courts (UIC.)”

The new UIC jittered the foundation of Mogadishu warlords, who jumped hoops to cajole Washington’s deep pockets for anything labeled “anti-terrorism.” Before we knew, the CIA was bankrolling a new, unprecedented alliance, aptly called “The Alliance for Peace and Counter-terrorism.”

It was doomed alliance. The UIC, under the deft leadership of Sh. Ahmed, crushed the warlords to near death, and pacified Mogadishu for the first time in 16 years.

UIC removed nearly 300 roadblocks around the country, re-commissioned Mogadishu International airport and seaport, all the while extending its hand to the Baydhabo-holed Transitional Federal Government (TFG.)

In the process, Sh. Ahmed, 43, was often referred to as the “moderate face of the UIC” in the Western media. Indeed, he developed an aura that appealed to all walks of the society, including his enemy. He’s famous for his superior oratory skills and negotiation capacity.

Simply, he might be the best leader Somalia has ever known.

His tenure was ended last week with Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia, while helping the Transitional Feferal Government.

Hiiraan Online recognizes Sh. Sharif Sh. Ahmed as the person of the year 2006, not only for his magnanimous personality, but for spearheading a fledgling, non-monolithic group, which, at times, overstepped its powers, and, at other times, underestimated its enemies.

Whatever the cause of failure of the UIC maybe, Sh. Ahmed epitomized peace for six historic months in Somalia, where he captured the stage by every stretch of the imagination. Without him, Mogadishu, dotted with the tanks of Somalia’s once arch enemy, fear and confusion is lurking in the minds of its embattled residents, as a new chapter of their live opens, rather precipitously.

Sheikh shariif masha allah in the future for his effort in bringing 6months peace and governance to Somalia, the ICU which he led defeated a collection of clan warlords which had Somalia in a status quo for 15 years. His legacy can even be seen today as clan warfare isnt as issue as before.

His skillfull negotiations, his call for peace should rank him alongside greats such as Yusuf, Barre, Sayid Abdullah Muxammed, Ahmed Gragn and others im going to post.

Some of the ones maybe infamous or even criminals but they all wanted all pursued the best for Somalia.
