UK says sorry for ‘dodgy dossier’

LONDON, June 10. — The British government has issued a rare apology for claiming that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction in a dossier which was later exposed to be a mish-mash of information from intelligence sources and a 13-year-old thesis by a Californian PhD student.

The dossier, titled Iraq: Its infrastructure of Concealment, Deception and Intimidation, was published by the government to boost public and political support for a war against Iraq. It was presented as fresh information from intelligence sources about Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s WMD and his attempts to hide them from the world.

But soon after the dossier’s release, the PhD student came forward to reveal that it contained parts of a thesis he had written in 1990 and which was posted on the Internet.

More embarrassment for the government followed when Jane’s, the highly respected British-based organisation which publishes detailed books about all the world’s military aircraft, ships and army equipment, said the dossier also used a significant amount of information from its publicly available Intelligence Review.

The dossier, published in February to coincide with Mr Tony Blair’s war summit in Washington with Mr George W Bush, made no acknowledgement of the sources and gave the impression that the British intelligence had recently gathered the data.

The government’s rare apology and admission follows the setting up last week of two inquiries into claims that the government concocted intelligence reports about Iraq’s alleged WMD, to justify the war.

Bush tones down rhetoric: Mr George W Bush has insisted that US forces would reveal that Iraq was pursuing weapons of mass destruction as he tried to douse growing doubts about the credibility of American intelligence, Times, London adds from Washington. The US President, however, stopped short of his previous assertions that Iraq’s WMDs had posed an imminent threat. Nor did he say that the USA would uncover biological and chemical agents.

Shaqsi, yes, poor Tonny is in a mess here in the UK! I think we shall see some head rollings in westminster. There is a huge debate on whether the PM mislead parliament and the general public.

 

Unless WMD is found Tonny is in trouble.

Did anyone watch 'This Week' on BBC1 last Thursday - Micheal Mansfield called Britain and America 'Terrorist States' and accused them of being just as bad as AlQaeda and the IRA !!!

the british are a gullable lot, leading ppl to fear that a strike by Saddam Hussain within 45mins of activating his weapons of mass destruction can impact the uk (even though Iraq is like 5000 miles away). They used this tactic just to make it look that the war was justified.

 

I was watching Spooks on BBC 1 the other night and could not believe what i was seeing, a young asian man who has been encouraged to blow up an infant school, the school is evacuated and he ends up blowing himself up along with his father who was trying to stop him doing so. Another obvious tactic by the media in frightening the viewers which will result in the belief that this is enevitable in the uk.

What can I say, the British are almost as ignorant as the Americans. The United Kingdom has always been on the outskirts of Europe in every sense of the word.

The US knew what it was doing. The US planned this war and it got it. The UK, on the other hand, has been decieved. Notice how Bush and his neo-cons aren't appreciative of Tony Blair's help. Some of the neo-cons even went as far as blaming the whole "intelligence failure" on the UK. lol

you're right sxb, all the credit for the war plans is due to the hawks and right wing conservatives, those in the pentagon and otherwise. They sure accomplished their plans. Wolfwitz in particular, he wrote the BUSH DOCTRINE itself, and get this: the original copy was presented to bush senior more than 10 yrs prior :confused:
