President Abdullahi Yusuf a political strategist par excellence

Background.

In 2005 Somalia had a great number of arrogant warlords and clan based millitias. Mogadishu alone had the infam, ous Qaynyare, Sudi Yalaxow, IndaCade, Qaybdeed, Auydeed Jr, Bootaan Cise Calin, Umar Finish, Goobanle, Seeraar, Xasan Dahir Aways, Daylaaf, Abukar Cumar Cadaan and numerous heavily armed business men and traders all enjoying independence and each holding their own turfs within the capital and above.

The strongest of these factions and armed groups were what came to be known as the clan courts of Mogadishu.

In 2005 all these sometimes opposing and desperate groups formed the Balcad coalition, held in a piece of realestate hedl by warlord Musa Sudi Yalaxow and at that time Minister of commerece of the TFG. Balcad group included all the Mogadishu faction groups as well as the JVA alliance which at that time held the port city of Kismayu.

The aim of this coalition was simple, to keep the looted properties acquired through the civil war period and maintain their independence and power throught the country and oppose any move the "weak" TFG made.

What was the old President to do?

Well his first action was to relocate to Baidoa a verys strategic town, then he built up the fighting capability of his governemnt, while gaining the support of the main states bordering Somalia notably the millitary strong Ethiopia and the diplomaticly influintial Kenya.

He then proceeded to divided the desperate groups that formed the opposition. By closing most of the diplomatic doors on this group with the exception of Eritrea and some Arab regimes, who out of fear could covertly supported these factions. This trigered a number of important events, one was an internal struggle between the group based on clan but masked as an ideological struggle i.e. a religious one.

One by one the Baclcad group was taken care off, some were brought closer into the TFG like Hiiraale, others were out played, hence the war between former allies in the guise of warlords Vs Caln courts.

This left them at loggerheads and playing into the hands of the old man..

All warfare is based on deception.

19. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable;

when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we

are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away;

when far away, we must make him believe we are near.

The above quote from Tsun Zu, highlights how the clan courts were lulled into a trap by avoiding to fight them head on at firts.

The TFG let them capture village after village, town after town untill drunk on their own false sucess they came rushing into Baidoa.

With the help of Ethiopian armour the old Blitzkrieg doctrine was successfully employed firts bombarding the areas held by heavy numbers of the clan courts and then routing them entirely. It took less than a week to dismantle decade long held areas and score a remarkable upset in what has become known as the minute war.

President Yusuf was not the agressor of the war but he prosecuted it sucessfully.

From a government with no army, support, or money. To the world recognised governemnt which has gained the support of the US, IGAD, AU as well as the security council.

The strategies put in place by President Yusuf have in large part played into the suceess of the TFG in the diplomatic arena as well as in the battle field.

A good case is how today there is the humbling of the once strong warlords and key players. Were they not allies of Ethiopia once, is Somaliland not an ally of Ethiopia as well?

Thats a simple explanation, a somw what weak excuse, Ethiopian support is not what delivered but a long term startegy, keeping the base happy while out playing the enemy.

The likes of Qaynyare, Abdiqasin and Sudi refused to meet with Yusuf in Jowhar & Baidoa but he forced their hand by arriving in Mogadishu, without any need or invitation from them. Then they came with open arms and full of smiles.

The old man is indeed a legend.

The Mogadishu troubles.

353449996_19e16cbd36_o.jpg

When the TFG arrived in Mogadishu it again waited patiently for the enemy to reveal himself. Who was the enemy? The clan courts, the armed factions, the armed traders? It was a combination of these groups and with time they revelead themselves, by removing the religious dress and putting on the ever usefull clan denim.

The TFg heleped these groups by naming Mogadishu as the venue of the reconciliation meeting and marking the 16th of April as the opening date

They reacted as expected by stepping up attacks as well as putting a face to the group. Nabadoon looter, Dr Culusow , Abdiqasin became the main players in the "insurgency".

Their firts plunder was to try and make deals with the Ethiopian officers & the Ugandans, as well as attacking the presence of fellow Somali's from Puntland. This highlgihted to the Somali's that this was not a struggle against "occupation" or the infidal but one against otehr Somali's, notably the clans who were ethnicly cleansed in the 1990s war.

They claimed Mogadishu as belonging to them, or the to the clan they spoke for, this played into Yusuf's hand because all the other Somali clans have a different view of Mogadishu, thus the important question was aksed, can Mogadishu be the capital of Somalia while under occupation?

The fact that this group was largely from a single sublcan also brought out a reaction from the otehr clans of Mogadishu who came out in support of the TFG against what they termed as a bunch of terrorists.

The simple move of declaring Mogadishu as the venue and April 16th as the date of the recociliation conference has had a posative effect on putting a face to the opposition..

A face many Somali's do not agree with, that of looters, scrap merchants & warlords who want to keep Mogadishu under their control...

Viva Mr President..

It's difficult to decide which is more pathetic: the title of the post, the subject of the post or the poster.

Meles Zenawi is the former tool of Siad Bare and Afreweki. Know he is being used by Bush. However, this one will be the ultimate disaster. I repeat once again, the man has been sent to a disaster in Somalia. Cocentrating on a few men( Indhacade etc) will not change or save him from this upcoming disaster!

Desperado.com people.

If Abdullahi Yusuf could moblize his militia, planned things out himself, than taken and defeated the UIC, yes this title would have been well suited, however that is not how things are, so. If he excelled in anything, it's him being a puppet and butt kisser.

he is very good at that.

Fanisha, wuxuba waa isla halkii uun, matagiisii ayuu iska dhargiyey kani. :D
