Somalia war 'not jihad,' concludes Islamic conference in Puntland

22 Apr 22, 2010 - 2:16:37 PM

A week-long Islamic conference that was held at Masjid Al-Huda in Garowe, the administrative capital of Somalia's stable northern state of Puntland, ended on Wednesday evening with a substantive outcome and a public appeal from the well-respected Somali Islamic scholars in attendance.

The Muslim scholars, from all corners of Somalia including breakaway region of Somaliland, gathered to discuss the history of Islam in Somalia and the methods of Da'wah, or the peaceful preaching of Islam across the population.

Among the top names in the conference include Sheikh Ali Warsame Hassan, Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Salad, Sheikh Abdullahi Dahir Jama, Sheikh Abdinasir Haji Ahmed, Sheikh Mahammed Idiris Ahmed, Sheikh Abdiqadir Nur Farah, Sheikh Yussuf Adan, Sheikh Ahmed Haji Abdirahman

Representatives from the Government of Puntland, including Cabinet ministers and members from Nugal provincial and district authorities, attended the closing ceremony of the conference.

Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole, who is currently on an official foreign trip, addressed the conference by speaking over the phone.

After the ceremony, the Islamic scholars jointly issued a 12 point communiqué that highlights the current scenarios facing Somalia, and condemning many un-Islamic practices used to fuel the escalating conflict and also warning the people.

They called on the Muslims to strictly follow the Islamic way of life and adhere to the ways in which Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used in reaching out to the population.

Authorities in Somalia were urged to implement the Islamic Shari'ah Law in the areas they control.

The Islamic clerics warned of legitimizing shedding Muslim blood in the "disguise of fighting for Islam" and also tagging a Muslim person as an infidel without taking the due process.

"Somalis are Muslims and they need to be calmly corrected in terms of their faith, culture and behavior. So, it is not acceptable for these groups fighting in Somalia to judge each other and other people as apostate," reads the communiqué issued at the conclusion of the Islamic conference in Garowe.

The clerics also agreed that the war that is going on in Somalia is an "incitement"

rather than a holy war (jihad), as claimed by the Islamist insurgent factions like Al Shabaab.

The communiqué condemned the presence of foreign troops in the country, saying they are not welcomed by the Somali people. Mogadishu is home to about 5,300 soldiers from Uganda and Burundi who are serving under an African Union peacekeeping mandate.

The presence of foreign troops inside the war-torn country is "dangerous to the religion and socio-political well being of the population," it adds.

Acts of piracy along the Somalia's coastline was also condemned in the communiqué, terming it "dangerous and shameful to Islam" and also degrading the people's way of life.

The Somali Islamic scholars proposed a large reconciliation conference to be held inside Somalia, which would bring together all the Islamic scholars to discuss the way forward in the bid to find a lasting solution for the swelling problems that face Somalia at the moment.

While in Puntland, the scholars held discussions with different people, including students, women's groups and the business community to enlighten society about Islam and related religious issues.

This annual conference comes at an appropriate time in Somalia' s turbulent history, as armed factions waging war in the name of Islam have created divisions among Muslims, both in Somalia and around the world, and have attracted foreign fighters to wage war inside Somalia.

Somalia's Western-backed interim government is headed by President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, who is a former chairman of the Islamic Courts Union, which controlled Mogadishu and other regions in 2006 until being thrown by Ethiopian troops, which sparked today's insurgency.

The main insurgent groups fighting the government include Al Shabaab and Hizbul Islam, both which are splinter factions of the ICU from 2006.

Both groups claim they want to impose Shari'ah law throughout Somalia and to overthrow the current interim government in Mogadishu, which enjoys the backing of AU peacekeeping troops. They accuse the government's top leaders of being "puppets" of the West.

Somali insurgent groups have often dismissed the declarations of the country's most respected Islamic scholars, who were in attendance at the Garowe Islamic conference.

Its not clear what impact the conference's message will have on the ongoing insurgency, but observers say the conference's message has reached the public and is a counter-weight against the radical message of Islamist insurgents .

Gabyaa aa beri hore wuxuu yeri:

تبقى الاسود مخيفه في اسرها

حتى وان نبحت عليها كلاب

تموت الاسود في الغابات جوعا

ولحم الضأن تاكله الكلاب

وعبد قد ينام على حرير

وذو نسب مفارشه التراب

Rough translation:

Lions remain awe-inspiring even in captivity/ even if they are barked at by dogs

And Lions die in the jungles out of hunger(implied: from a refusal to surrender and compromise their inherent God-given majesty)/ while dogs(implied: who have sold out & surrendered) eat (tender, juicy) goat-meat

And a slave may sleep on (a bed) of silk/ whilst a nobleman's bed may be the dirt

While these so-called "respected scholars", clad in their rich, flowing garments, sit pretty in the Ethiopian Protectorate of Puntland and stuff their soft, overgrown bellies with hilib ari and geel, while issuing out a Super-Holy-Fatwa(kinda like the paid advertising you see on late-night TV), the Somali Lions are out there in the fields of Glory, impervious to pain, hunger, or lack of sleep, doing what Lions do best: serving and protecting their pride and their lair: Somalia.

Lions will remain Lions

dogs will remain dogs.

And the twain shall never meet.

Al Shaafici's verses are abused here

Muslim Scholars are not dogs, nor do they condone injustice anywhere. But what else would expect from a takfiiri brother

ASWRB.

Certainly this gathering turned into a mockery and justice was lost when a man who sold fellow Somali Muslims to Abysnia, and then went on to publicly deny their Somaliness, was invited to speak, as if he was the emirul mumnineen.

Nonetheless, these ulema have their right to itijihad and opinion. All Halganized Somalis of murabitun dna origins should strive to disagree with them in the most civil and politest manner. Indeed, this is the way of the muwahideen.

It should also be noted that these Ulema are not equivalent to the Words of Allah swt, nor the words of the Prophet (saw), nor the words of the early generations, nor the Ijmac of the Muslims. Their words are binding upon us, if they agree with xaq; otherwise, we say, " thank you, but no thank you". One should also be careful about only taking and pasting Fatawa which conveniently suit his political opinions, whilst completely making himself oblivious to the other side of the argument. In a nutshell, these are not the only Ulema that exist in the world and there are some who will disagree with them. Furthermore, some issues are as clear as daylight and we don't need ulema to tell us how to walk.

Peace and Victory to the halganized SOmalis of murabitun dna origins. Peace be upon the descendants of the Somali Berbers.

Salaam.

The Garowe conference comes at a time when cheapened slogans of jihad and dignity, imitation of popular legends such Sayidka and Ahmed Gurey, snippets of raw quotations from the Koran, and sheer pulpit oratory are almost replacing and corrupting apt sayings of the prophet, teachings of theology and limits of jurisprudence, historical narratives of da’wah struggle and the essence of being wadaad. It’s an excellent introduction, and constitutes a proper groundwork to combat the prevalent theological deviations that drove well meaning youth to sever the head of own brothers and sisters in Islam in the hope of being amongst pleasers of Allah, the Great. If one were in doubt that Somalia’s Muslim scholars were incapable in mustering united-front against apparent excesses, the Garowe conference proved otherwise. If one were in the illusion that political clichés and youtube catchphrases of dividing the Somali terrain into Muslim vs Gaal would deter these scholars from uttering the righteous word, the Garowe conference showed that these aging lions are still capable baring their teeth at the ruckus that is the gathering hyenas.

One can call them traitors, sleepers with the enemy, weaklings, but the strength of their word, and stealth of their message is hard to ignore. It will sure penetrate in the trenches of the hurriedly organized youth, who were only told that fighting was great but the fiqh of fighting was sadly omitted in the shallow sermons they received. One can already see, the fear in the hearts of our online brigade since the release of religious communiqué from Garowe. If Kismayo’s Guulwade military camp inaugurated the birth of armed da’wah, Garowe’s conferences will insha Allah lead the way to shed off the execess and impose the required discipline for the profession of being men of da’wah.

As for the men who came afar to give profitable sermons, amy Allah bless you, and may His mercy engulf you. Aamiin

Good point, the Ulema have been quite, hoping that al-shabaab will moderate once the Ethiopian army withdraws from Mogadishu. It was not to be and instead, the al shabaab fractured further into Hizb Islam. Today we have muslim killing muslim in Mogadishu and Kismayo and central Somalia all because al shabaab and Hizb Islam refused to sit down with the Sharif govt and compromise for the good of Somalia.

Today the Ulema of Somalia are saying enough is enough, there should be no more killing in the name of Islam. Their fatwa "The Islamic clerics warned of legitimizing shedding Muslim blood in the "disguise of fighting for Islam" and also tagging a Muslim person as an infidel without taking the due process " invalidates all the weak arguments the young militants al shabaab use to justify the killing of fellow muslims. It exposes al shabaab for what they are and the Somali people have rejected their deviant ideology.

To justify jihad in the name of god you would have to fight aggressors and disbelievers to create peace for the oprressed or even spread Islam to a region.

But saaxib its a civil war between the former ICU, quarelling over nothing; both sides want to establish shariah law. One side is backed by terrorists their leader supposedly hiding in a cave in tora bora and the other side is backed every single state who has engaged in the Somalia conflict in the world.

One side wants to establish peace through peaceful talks and negotiations and the other wants to continue the conflict.

So would i be wrong if i chose the side which has the best chance of uniting all of Former Somalia and establishing a state which is recognized by the rest of the world and not some facke delusioned crazies from Afghanistan.

Simply put by choosing the TFG youll be choosing peace and a new state with Puntland and quite possibly Somaliland joining and inshallah the country finally having a growing economy but choosing youll be choosing Alshabaab the other side of the bandwagon which is more war, more invasions ( Puntland, Somaliland next), more Ethiopian interventions, more deaths and before that happens the South becoming a base for Alqaeda and assosciates and the Horn spiraling out of control and having with US interventions like in Afghanistans; now i ask you who wants that? i dont think even the most dellusioned from the diaspora would wish for that; cause they can clearly see whats been happening in Afghanisan for the past 30 years.

^^ Empty talk really. Al Shabab will not change their way just because afar odey sat in Garowe and spoke about what is xalal and what is xaram. These scholars would have done well to go directly to Al Shabab and sit with them face to face instead of talking from far away Garowe and appearing to support the opposition.

This is not how disputes are sorted.
