This is a good news. No irregularities. No violence. Ambitious men allowing their people to decide who among them is worth the shot. It can't get better than that. Hopefully this won't lead to the dismemberment of the country.

As of now SL is two steps ahead of Puntland (governance wise) and 20 steps ahead of the rest of the country.

This is a victory for the folks in that neck of the wood.

Hambalyo.

If SL is 20 steps ahead of Somalia, south of Galkacyo, then SL is rightfully 15 steps ahead of Puntland. Two seems like an irrelevant number.

Either way, congrats to some parts of the ideal SL for holding peaceful parliamentary elections. Good luck to KULMIYE - only folks that make some sense...

^^kkkkkkkkkk

As people are predicting, this is a very very close elections. They say no single party will be able to recieve 51 majority lead. Which is good. Because say if Kulmiye gets 51% of the votes (42 seats), then it will go and impeach the president... If UDUB recieves 51%, then not much will change. But if all 3 parties recieve less than 51% each, then they have to work as coalition, if they want to do anything.

Sxb, Somaliland will eventually recieve its hard earned recognition... that is an inevitable reality. :D

The elections have been a blessing for the business community. Can you believe it an estimated 10 million dollars cash were flooded into the markets for the pass month. All that money going in into the hands of friends as bakhshiish and shaxaad. ah.. intee qof siyaasi ahi dadka danyarta ah uun dhacaayay. ;)

As for the polling, the only problem so far is the number of polling stations which is too small a number when you see the number of people that came out to vote. In all the regions, this was the only problem reported.

"two steps ahead of Puntland "

how economical

Suldaan today we are all in a festive mood. Elections are held there in a peaceful manner. That's good. Puntland made a point about who is in charge of where. That's good too for it makes easier for the powers we are all kissing their behind to render a judgement on this question.

Before the recognition is granted the question is: Is Somaliland itself divisible? if yes (and why elections were not held in the SSC regions drive this point to home) how one go about the border demarcation? This very election reinforces the "Puntland problem" David Shinn has talked about before.

This is a victory for the unionists if u can swallow that. For the secession sympathizers (international lobby) have no leeway to ignore Puntland's claim over the SSC regions.

Wind, whatever.

first of all asalamu calaykum, brother, and thanks for giving us the good news from Somaliland. However, I am still wondering when they will decide who wins.

I am very excited and I can't wait until the elections have been decided. it's indeed good big step towards a nationhood for Somaliland. It takes a hard work and patience to make anything fair and just these days in Africa. Somaliland is a great example for the rest of unstabalized including Somalia.

Wind talker, although I hate to ruin the moment, you have to realized how much hardwork the somaliland people have put towards these elections, and it's sad for you not to show your excitement. instead "good luck" is what you give. You should be praising these people and showing the happiness that it deserves. Kulmiye isn't the only one that make sense, they all make sense, however they have different plans for the country. Respect each in their own way and utter such low based comments. after all I am Ucid supporter all the way and would be happy as long as there is peacefull elections occur.

One can't help but remark on how accurate that statement is. The divisibility of the secessionist state has been more then highlighted!

^^^LOL

Puntland made a point about who is in charge of where

It is not about Puntland being in charge of anywhere. Somaliland took the view of not putting its people at risk of conflict instagated by a brutal outside forces, that have no regards for the well being of the locals.

With the acception of few places, all are going as planned. The polls are going smoothly in 15 polling stations in Eastern Sanaag, and further many more in Southern Sanaag. Not to mention the regional capital, Erigavo where people turned out in their thousands more then the previous elections.

As for Sool region, again, the district of Xuddun with the acception of Xuddun village. Half of Laascaanood, and Caynaba district. All the areas that were planned for the election to take place. Some reports suggest that many Lascanod residents also casted their votes along side the people of Adhicadeye, which is just 30K away. In Lascanod district also, people voted in Hadhwanaag, Yagoori and Guumays. Caynabo district needs not to be mentioned for obvious reasons. :D

In Buuhoodleh district, the vote is taking place 9 of the 11 vilages that come under. Again as planned.

The few places which the election isn't taking place have already been discussed earlier by the parliament. There is a special law for how the seats of those places will be selected. 4 seats from the 12 seats reserved for SOOL region will not be contested. In Sanaag 2 seats of the 12 seats for that region will not be contested, and for Togdher 1 seat of the 15 seats will not be contested. All those seats that will not be contested which is a total of 7 seats, they will be shared by the Poltiical parties according to the law passed by the parliament.

This is a victory for the unionists

Regional experts think otherwise. icon_razz.gif

C'mon Sky. U don't wanna do that pal.

Suldaan,

My man I don't wanna ruin this informative thread. This event is a huge step for Somalis. I honestly welcome it. I am not fan for the secession and anything I say about Somaliland should be understood within that context.

As to the areas under Puntland, that's self evident to impartial observers. You too know very well what the actualities on the ground are. Perhaps many readers would ask what's wrong having openly contested political offices in these areas! Nothing, really. There is bigger stake in play here. There are Somalis who are for secession and other Somalis who are against dismembering the country. Somaliland authorities are for it and if elections succeed in all areas they claim the International observers would be hard pressed to not consider recognition status these Somalis are asking for. Puntland is challenging the International audiences to consider to dismember Somaliland itself when and if they decide to dismember Somalia.

As a recovery zone with all the trappings of a state, Puntland claims these areas as part of its territory. Since there is no effective Somali state, Puntland forces the world bodies to see the former British colony as a contested territory between two recovery zones. This is how the game is being played.

In the coming days we will see two different reportings from these regions. One will try to paint the picture that parts of SL have taken part in the elections. The other side will dismiss and paint totally different pictures. At the end of the day, Elections observers will call as it is just like they did last election.

Will see how this one plays out though.
